Leonidas,

What can we say about a country where the military strongman represent THE progress?
Since how many centuries the choice is between either some Allahu Akbaroglu or ruthless secular junta?

What amazes you in modern Turkey is that you won't find
any literature anywhere on Armenian or Greek or Assyrian genocides.Instead the turks are fed the pseudo-historical nonsense of Ghazi Mustafa Kemal pasha nicknamed
Ataturk.

Kemal when in power had even created the opposition to his rule so his dictatorship could look acceptable to the West.He later changed his mind and had them all hanged.

He was also the one introducing article 301 of the Turkish penal code-going to prison for insulting Turkishness.

The army has carried out four coups since the 1960s and has been involved in the planning of another fifteen which were not executed.
They own virtually all Turkish defence industries with the generals receiving a big cut for themselves out of the procurement contracts.

Nobody in his right mind will ever think the army will let go all their power and priveleges.Erdogan's so called reforms are just parodies.

Turkey will still continue with its parliamentary monarchy for the immediate years. The elites will continue feeding ordinary turks with such sligas as" happy is the one who is a Turk" or "Only a turk can be a friend to a turk".

But what do ordinary Turks think about the showdown between the country’s Islamist-rooted government and secular armed forces?

Turkey's claim of being a secular state is just a myth.
Its Islamisation rate is only second to Saudi Arabia
boasting 85000 mosques, one for every 400 citizens compared with one hospital for every 70000 citizens.
During the AKPs rule of the last 5 years the number of mandrasses schools have grown ten fold so has the budget of the directorate of
religious affairs (from $300 million to $2 billion).
Needless to say that Friday prayers attendance exceeds that of Iran and that alone makes a mockery of mullah Erdogan's claim that Turkey is a secular state.

I think the recent arrests of military officers in Turkey are for public consumption only.Their public exposure to Turkey's media is part of Erdogan's elaborate plan to show the Turkish public that he is confronting the army head-on.

It's also part of his plans to show the EU(the role of the Turkish military in public life was criticised in EU's report on Turkey)that he is on top of things in Turkey and not the military.
