This viewpoint of claiming that the west is so bad because of capitalism also applies to the east now. And tell the millions of chinese girls working in sweatshops that the Chinese system is a third way system. Clearly, it is bourne on exploiting the poorest.
(bganon, 15 February 2010 17:53)

I agree, but at this point in time working in a sweatshop pays better than working on the land whereas in the west there is nowhere to go but down. There are numerous western countries which have or are changing their industrial laws for this very purpose – how many time have you heard “we have to be competitive”?

In essence, my point is why offer anything when there is no competition. That is why I lament the loss of communism not because of what it offered but it forced the other side to give us a good standard of living.

Well said. The same strategy is being used in the west.

Vladmir's comment is fair but you both negate one vital fact - although capitalism has its origins in the west, it is now practiced in the east.

Isn't neoliberalism wonderful? Higher prices so the wealthy foreign investors can make billions of dollars in profit while the working class become poorer and poorer. These stats are not random but are endemic to neoliberal markets. maybe Serbs should rethink their idea of joining the West; otherwise all of Serbia could be destitute.

Well said. The same strategy is being used in the west, but the people cannot see it happening because it’s evolving slowly and being sold to them as good policy – work longer and harder but for less pay.

The signs of an inefficient, bureaucratic government with irresponsible financial policies. We need a economically friendly government not the corrupt, socialist gangbangers we have now.

that´s a normal procedure in every country that is making itself eu-fit and of course will stay this way.

that´s normal when you give up democracy, when you sell out your country economically, when you make your country a province with theoretical lawgivers/parliament ...

in every phase in every time ...

be that portugal, spain, greece

or great britain ...

or austria ...

or the skandinavian members ...

or the 10 newest members ...

in all of them the great masses today are poorer then before and only a handfull of bandits ehm benefitors love it ...

and why shouldn´t they love it?

its sad but Boris Tadic is simply using his EU rhetoric to stay in power while the EU itself is supporting him because they know that if they don't then a much bigger hardliner such as Nikolic will come to power. I think Serbs need to wake up and start looking at things a bit more seriously. It is obvious that in order to join the EU they are going to make it conditional on kosovo's recognition. Simply put, that means Serbs are going to HAVE TO choose between the EU and Kosovo. Despite what a lot of people say, the will to keep kosovo in Serbia is not as high as people make it out to be and this is directly because of Tadic and his very damaging politics.

What Serbia needs to do in order to keep Kosovo is elect a hardliner such as Nikolic who will strengthen ties with Russia and which will force Europe to listen to Serbia because it does not want heavy Russian influence in the region. Right now Tadic is trying to make it seem like WE NEED EUROPE when in actuality it is EUROPE THAT NEEDS US.

The standard of living under Slobodan was fantastic! Just watch a YouTube clip of the wonderful festivities in central Belgrade on 5 October 2000!

Albian, the story has nothing to do with Kosovo. There are other topics regarding Serbs, than our southern province. Please keep to the topic of discussion.

Is someone able to describe what the standard of living for Serbia was like when that idiot Slobodan Milosevic was in power? Was it better or worse? As a matter of fact when I viewed a documentary about that Serb warlord whose nickname is Arkan on You Tube it was said that when Serbia had trade sanctions or embargo imposed against it that that creep (Arkan) was amassing a huge fortune by potential dishonest means.

Like the rest of the world who are slaves to the private central bankers. Serbia must brake those chain and adopt the Austrian school of economics. With sound money back by gold/silver.... only than will we prosper.

One way to improve living standards is to fight the wide-spread corruption and those in local government adminstration posts to start actually doing some work instead of just sitting around, smoking and drinking coffee all day and feeling important. Please dont respond and pretend otherwise because we have direct experience of this for over 40 years! It wont matter what system Serbia adopts (EU or pro-russian) etc - things wont get better until the mentality changes in Serbia. Learn to do an honest days work, serve the public first before serving yourself and respect others.
