The ICJ cannot address China’s “concerns” but then rule in favour or lean to an independent Kosovo. China cannot afford to see Kosovo as a “regional issue” because it is not only concerned about Taiwan, but Tibet and several other internal parts of China proper.
China does not have to be impressive at the ICJ when it has most of the money in the world.

China participated in the oral arguments, yes, but its
written statement was brief (available here: http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/index.php?p1=3&p2=4&k=21&case=141&code=kos&p3=1) and cited only the standard claims made by all of Team Serbia. It did get an extensive write-up in
B92, I admit.

There was no formal vote, but Russia attempted at the emergency session of the UNSC to have Kosovo's declaration of independence declared "null and void," while China only mentioned concerns about peace in the Balkans and the precedent of a SC resolution being ignored. (Which Team Kosovo of course says was not the case.)

China is definitely worried about any effects on Taiwan - it came up in an interview given to the Chinese press at the time (fortunately, available in English) but in the past the country has been reluctant to use the veto (only 6 times), and if its concerns are dealt with in the ICJ ruling it may very well abstain in future votes on a matter it sees as being of only regional importance. Note the "if" here.

The fact that China participated in the proceeding may have been "monumental" as a sign of its increasing self-assertiveness in the world, but its actual participation was not particularly impressive.

If I was working with UNMIK I would also like to go on as long as possible. Why loose all those benefits? Thousands of EUR in salary annually, beautiful looking girls as girlfriends and pretending to be a smart person by trying to tell the locals „how the democracy and rule of law works“. What a joke, i.g. a Nigerian, a Russian or a Bangladeshi working for UNMIK to tell the Kosovars how the real democracy and rule of law works. That’s pathetic and pure waste of money. I know for a fact that they can show Kosovars how the real democrazy woks!

Amer - you are talking utter nonsense. China did not abstain from anything. There was never a vote. And please don't pretend China could go either way. Beijing's decision to participate in the ICJ case was monumental. It was the first time it had ever appeared before the Court - and to defend Serbia's position. By any objective analysis, this was not a 'pro forma' effort. Do not misrepresent the situation. You insult everyone by doing so.

'Pejoni - you are not as well Informed as you like to think you are. China is also against your UDI. No UN membership without Moscow and Beijing.

And don't give me the nonsense about needing 100 votes in the General Assembly. UN rules clearly state that the Security Council must make the recommendation first.
(Jim, 23 January 2010 16:58) '

China abstained, it did not vote against Kosovo's declaration of independence. If the ICJ ruling persuades it that it in no way relates to the Uigurs and Tibetans and so forth, China might abstain on future votes, which is as good as voting for. (BTW, read its Written Statement for the ICJ - only 8 pages, with no written comments on others' statements at all. Truly a pro forma performance.) So it's down to Russia, which already has NIS.

Kosovo wants to be recognized from all states. Therefore Kosovo has to recognize and accept the UN including its stakeholders, rules and institution. That means UNMIK is still in charge.
