Thanks Ment, the political situation is complex and fairly depressing (to me.) once upon a time we had a real Peace movement, i was loosely a member of Peace Now, which was/is a more or less liberal (not radical), progressive, multi-ethnic movement. i'm afraid that since the assassination of rabin by one of "our" own, and various other disasters, the peace/progressive movement in israel is in disarray.

if i lived in israel i would either have to become a major activist (again), or wear blinders everywhere...

I'm actually not surprised at all that Israel is more friendly to Serbia and Russia nowadays.

In the past couple of decades, Israel has seen large immigration levels from ex-Soviet countries (Russia predominantly). It is only natural that the new citizens bring with them the loyalties and antagonisms along with many of the mentalities of the "old" mother country. Couple this with the non-stop idiocies coming from the "Muslim world" (Middle East, Malaysia, Pakistan, Iran) and well,...you get the picture.

Only a short while ago, Tzipi Livni came to the region and Albania and Israel established visa-free travel with each other and pledged to talk and do better business. This guy's business seems to be the creation of paranoia and suspicion in places where there are few if any.

I think I mentioned before that I'm definitely not a fan of Netanyahu :-).

1) Lieberman is widely recognized as a right-wing, and poorly represents Israel's Jews.

2) Albright, Soros, Lantos, etc. have never identified themselves as Jews (though they may acknowledge Jewish lineage). But they do not consider themselves part of any community, nor have they acted on behalf of one. Though I rarely accuse anyone of anti-semitism, blaming the actions of these non-identified people on a heritage that they themselves barely claim (and in the cases of Albright and Lantos, turned away from), is, indeed, an expression of anti-semitism.

3) Though few places in Europe can boast a clear conscience in the treatment of their Jewish (and often, other) minorities, Serbia has behaved with far more respect than most - and continues to do so.

# Just do a quick biography check on this dude and you'll find that he's a member of the nationalist, far right faction of Israeli politics. No wonder the man sees Al-Qaida wherever there are Muslims.

Btw., the reason Al-Qaida took hold in Africa is that there are no functioning governments there (think Sudan, Somalia...). Hardly the case in the Balkans, where surveillance is probably as tight as in the rest of Europe.

That's not to say Al-Qaida does not remain a threat, but "taking over?"
(Ment, 7 January 2010 18:00)

thanks Ment. this is a continuation of our earlier discourse, and an attempt to make sense of the jewish relationship(s) with the balkans.

lieberman is a right wing Israeli politician, of soviet/moldovan background. and apparently of questionable professional ethics; but what else is new?

this "special" relationship between jews and the belgrade regime has no reality with us, that is, any of the jews whom i know, mostly american. that would simply be a misstatement, a lie. and we are exactly aware of the history of antisemitism in serbia, of how my people "disappeared" there during the war. spare me all of the revisionist history garbage.

and the holy relationship of jews with putin russia AND serbia!? really, what world are you living in? not mine, not we jews.

there were Righteous Gentiles (the old term) scattered throughout the balkans. you can find the info on the us holocaust memorial museum site, and elsewhere. forget all of the serbian propaganda sites.

i will acknowledge a basic and general divide btwn MOST of us and many israeli jews. they are by no means great historical frnds of serbia -- they watched the same horrors of the last decade that we all did, sometimes even intervened in humanitarian projects. but there is a great and sometimes irrational fear of the Moslem world, and of course the serbian propagandists have been fast and furious to abuse and enlarge these fears.

i am no fan of islamic extremism and terror -- it is one of the great modern evils, in my opinion. but it is not alone or in a vacuum, and is part of a fundamentalist trend that we notice here on a daily basis. in fact neither bosnia nor kosovo/a are natural places for extreme, political islam. tragically, since all of the horrors of the 90s (by guess who?) a certain amount of "unnatural" extremist Islam has been nurtured in parts of the balkans, incl bosnia. that is something that must be resisted in every way.

i cannot speak for ALL jews, and i really don't care for others to speak for myself, or millions of my fellow jews.

thank you and shalom.

Greetings Ataman.Your postings are very informative and I congratulate you on your witt. No righteous self-respecting Jew who knows European history should have many bad things to say about Serbs in general. All groups have their angels and demons but the Serbs showed as much tolerance for their Jewish population as needed throughout the ages and for this reason Jews should be forever grateful.Israel will never recognize Kosovo as a sovereign state and it is foolish for anybody to think that any US administration has much influence in convincing Israel otherwise. When I say that every group of people has their angels and demons I of course include Jews in this category and the ones who have raised their voices against the Serbian people have no audience in Israel itself whatsoever.Money is unfortunately in some cases a more powerful ally than righteousness and there lies the interests of many whether it be Holbrook or Madoff.Shalom to all the people in the Balkans who prefer righteousness, truth and justice over narrow self-interests.Jews especially Israeli ones understand very well that Kosovo is holy land for Serbs regardless of the present ethinc/religious make up.Merry Christmas to all Orthodox Christians celebrating the birth of Jesus according to the Julian calendar. Mr Liberman thank your friends from Us-Israeli lobby for creating this situation. Albright,Clark,Holbrook,Berger,Lantos,Soros and bunch of other similars heavily contributed to current situation.
(szemi, 7 January 2010 16:05)

Szemi,

If you see two Jews, they for sure belong to three political parties. I worked with many from Baku or Minsk - they are more pro-Serbs, than the monks in Studenica.

I can't say the same about Albright tough. As far as Israel: they can't deny the huge immigration wave from Soviet Union - and guess, where the sympathies of these people are. So my guess is, their politicians want to be (re)elected. And any anti-Russian or anti-Serbian (which is almost the same, by the way) voice in Israel is a political suicide. So Mr. Liberman just does not want to commit one, regardless what he thinks. Unlike (not very bright) Albright who lives under very different circumstances.

While this is only my guess - hope, Luciano can confirm it, since he is living in Israel.

As for Soros... well, not every idea of him turned out to be very lucky either. But some actually did, here we need to be selective.

BTW: Abdul Naser was a faithful apprentice of Adolf Hitler, did you know? And all the rest is like that. If afterlife exists, all these "bollahs" (Oric, Basayev, Hisbollah, Snake - you name them) won't need warm clothing for eternity. And of course Saak can join that crowd, as honorary fascist. Mr Liberman thank your friends from Us-Israeli lobby for creating this situation. Albright,Clark,Holbrook,Berger,Lantos,Soros and bunch of other similars heavily contributed to current situation.

When Serbs were fighting these terrorists your lobby in america was blasting anti-Serb propaganda 24/7.
(Ratko, 7 January 2010 16:36)

Hehe, it's not his lobby, it's their lobby. Anyway - let me repeat - his bollah or their bollah is not my bollah. Naser Oric, Snake, Pigeon, Shamil Basayev, Arafat - all the same bollah, belongs straight to hell without double standards.

What a zoo!

You mean like the Hrvati did during WW2 when they "defended" Europe against good.
(MikeC, 7 January 2010 17:49)

Probably not. Whom Boban means is Nikola Subic Zrinski. The Zrinski family was all about resisting the Ottomans and Hapsburgs and all my respect to them for that.

Ottomans were the tragedy of entire Balkan and Middle East for over 500 Centuries and how right was Zrínyi / Zrinski equalling them with opium.

BTW, Ment, a few of us are founding a new jewish-albanian friendship organization. if you or anyone else is interested, lemme know.

ciao!
