Then why build Camp Bondsteel? To protect the Albanians, I think not. The US does not really trust the Europeans – I mean the mainland Europeans. The UK is different because it cannot survive without US investment otherwise the pound would be the same value as the Albanian Lek. Gordon Brown stated just before becoming PM that he would take troops out of Iraq, Bush reply was “you do that then we will take all US investment out”. Conclusion, the British stayed in Iraq after Brown became PM.
The US planned to attack Afghanistan in 1992. Afghanistan is a major piece in the jigsaw to bring a pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Pakistan so that they do not have to cross any Russian territory. Bill Clinton was being urged to attack first Iraq and after putting in power a friendly government, then go for Afghanistan, all during his first term in office.
Which eastern European nation has not contributed to NATO forces in Afghanistan? Serbia was different. Milosevic did not want to cooperate with the US and the rest is history.
If you do not believe this I certainly will not lose too much sleep over it, but basically what I have said is true. The US did not go to Kosovo because they felt sorry from the Albanians – look at Rwanda.

What lies? That it would all be easy? I've worried that our State Department didn't do a better job of foreseeing the future, but lies...?

sj -

"With Camp Bondsteel and others they have Europe under their control ..."

Look at a map - nothing is that far from anything else in the Balkans, the particular location for Bondsteel was hardly as critical as you seem to suggest. Of course the US wants to be able to protect the flow of energy to Europe - Europe is our traditional ally, and having them at Russia's mercy is certainly not in our interests.

As for the business about Afghanistan - you're reading way too much cheap fiction. And if you think we went into Kosovo for the troops they could provide, why not make friends with Serbia, then? They've got a lot more people.

Camp Bondsteel is part of US strategy regardless of whether you have bases in Bulgaria or anywhere else. The location of bases is done selectively and for specific reasons, and if you believe that the US went into Kosovo on humanitarian grounds then you are badly mistaken. They neither like nor dislike Albanians, Serbs, Croats or who ever it’s the interest of their corporations that govern their actions. With Camp Bondsteel and others they have Europe under their control and then they look to Ukraine, Georgia et al then towards the resource rich Caspian Sea. Energy flowing from the east would be under US control. The Corporations interest here is making lots and lots of money.
The US attacked Afghanistan because it was not cooperating with its grand design of allowing a pipeline(s) from the Caspian Sea to Pakistan. They did not go there to avenge 9/11 – it was preplanned but they needed an excuse. In fact George Walker Bush entertained the Taliban leadership on his Texas ranch in 1989 to get them to cooperate about the pipelines.
The US does not want to have bases in because strategically it’s not necessary plus Albania they don’t’ want to prop up poor countries – seriously set aside your prejudices and look at the situation closely in Kosovo. The US/EU have done nothing to improve the lives of people in Kosovo except talk about freedom and democracy and the only people to benefit is the local politicians. Also, they don’t need bases in Croatia, Albania or Montenegro and quite frankly they can’t afford them any more either.
Like the Romans, the US is pushing the NATO agenda for manpower reasons only. It’s stuck in two wars with no end in sight and the other NATO members are not fulfilling their obligations so new members have to be found.
Your statement that the US used Kosovo as a chance to improve its image in the Moslem world is true. In fact it goes further the US saw its first chance with Bosnia where they organized with then Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin for him to contribute US$3000 towards a fund to help Bosniaks – this was done on TV. Also, various Jewish lobbies around the world attacked Serbs for their actions in Bosnia. Personally, I thought it was the weirdest strategy ever considering what was going on in Palestine.
There comes a point where promises either lead to something or another path is chosen. Unfortunately, as the US or EU are not going to invest too much money in Kosovo to provide jobs, then religious radicalization could become a problem. Poverty listens when someone offers a solution to problems.

Olf - It's clear whose views some people are representing here, but since the U.S. is referred to so often, I think it's a good idea not to let certain posters claim - unchallenged - that they speak for all 305+ million of us. If I don't change anyone's opinion, so be it.

I still think it's better for people who disagree to communicate than to spend all their time having their (my) biases reinforced by talking only to people who they (I) agree with. B92 is doing good work. (Although some of their edits I'll never understand.)

Peace.

We weren't/aren't desperate for Balkan real estate. The US has the greatest reserves of coal in the world - we hardly need Kosovo's lignite. And with a population of 2 million, Kosovo is not going to be a major recruiting ground for further campaigns. (Did you know that when the Eastern and Western Roman Empires split the Balkans the resource they wanted was its Illyrian manpower for their armies?) Your previous statement shows you have no idea about our country's geopolitical interests. Kosovo was not the first to offer anything to the US... after all, the Croats adored the US and offered everything for the help in ethnically cleansing Serbs from Krajina during Storm. Before that, Tito had excellent ties to the US because of his fallout with Stalin. Do not fool yourself into thinking that Kosovo is a partner with the US. Again I say, you were used. Were all those villages in Serbia emptied out by their inhabitants fleeing wandering cows? Hannibal had to use elephants to inspire such terror.

Please don't shoot the cows, though - they're friendly enough beasts. They really don't do any harm, unless you let them produce paths that you later base city streets on. As in my Boston :(

KosovoMetohija-USA,

Your previous statement shows you have no idea about our country's geopolitical interests. It is evident because what we say goes, and Pristina follows orders.

Please, just what is it the US was supposed to gain by siding with the Kosovo Albanians? Camp Bondsteel? We have multiple bases in Bulgaria, Albania would gladly become the 51st state and give us half the country for more bases (including naval bases). And then there are Croatia and Montenegro as well. We weren't/aren't desperate for Balkan real estate. The US has the greatest reserves of coal in the world - we hardly need Kosovo's lignite. And with a population of 2 million, Kosovo is not going to be a major recruiting ground for further campaigns. (Did you know that when the Eastern and Western Roman Empires split the Balkans the resource they wanted was its Illyrian manpower for their armies?) I've even heard that the US wanted to improve their reputation with the Muslim world - a lot of good that did us, most of the Muslim countries considered Kosovo more European than Muslim (those that had ever heard of it). So what is it that the Kosovars are going to suddenly discover someday that we were after that will arouse their anger?

Anyway your local commander is one of two, complete loaf ;) or self despising soldier/cop, either way carrying out orders.. Sorry but dont put faith in idiots or in cynical bastards feeling 80 at 35 with something to lose. Put hope on this: governments change. And on this: some ministers end up in jail.
