Does anybody still believe that the Americans are in Afganistan to help with the reconstruction of the country?

It is totally illogical to engage the full might of NATO
and the US in the pursuit of a bunch of Taliban peasants unless,of course, your neighbour is Iran or the caspian oil fields.
