An Italian minister stated several months ago that this same thing should be done in Italy and it was in reaction to a lot of rapes going on by immigrants, of which Albanians were one of the top arrested for this type of crime.

This is not the solution, as human fears have no boundaries . What next? Zap the brains of troubled school-yard-bullies, de-claw all the cats and take all the teeth out of dogs in order to protect our children? These troubled individuals should be segregated from our society, rehabilitated and evaluated before returning them back into society. It's costly, but that's the price one has to pay to live in a truly moral and civilized society. And besides, these unfortunate people are a member of some ones family in our society, and tomorrow it could be your family member or your neighbors. The brain has recently been mapped and the advances already being made are extremely encouraging,so let's not leap blindly into the unknown, and let others experiment with this nazi-ish approach.
Do not "Mengelize" Serbia like the EU is dreaming of "Mengelizng" Europe.

HaHa.....
I tend to stay away from the comments from the last year or so, because it seems to lead to unproductive arguments, imaginary theories, and full circle stupidity.
But your little pokes 'n' jokes always put a smile on my face..Keep up the good work.

The article is a tough call. On one hand, an advanced society is supposed to avoid draconian measures of punishment, whereas, the punishments themselves cannot be solved any other way..It's a lose-lose situation for everybody. Whatever the punishment, the victims are the ones who will never get justice.

On another note:
Happy New Years everybody...

In terms of this story (to which your comment is totally irrelevant) I feel uncomfortable at any 'cure' such as this because there are failings in all legal systems.

In theory it would be great if those who were beyond rehabilitation such as paedophiles could be chemically castrated, but it would set a dangerous precedent and open the floodgates for other draconian laws.

As far as I know, the "chemical castration" is just temporary lowering the libido. It was widely used in Socialist countries targeting teenagers of school groups (Summer camps) and all over military. I am 100% sure I was among the targets as well as everyone of my age. I don't feel any consequences tough - but the legality of such "measure" is more, than questionable.

The way it was done: the organizers of Summer camps or such demanded the kitchen to add certain chemical components to the morning tea. Since I am (unlike "true" Hungarians) very-very picky about the tea - I felt immediately the strange taste (later one of our Chemistry-nerds conformed it scientifically) and skipped that "drink". Others did not, but how effective it really was - there I have my doubts ;-)

It was of course a 100% illegal thing according the law, but in "communist" countries the law was a strange thing.

As for the original case: just in the case someone claims there are other side-effects (like higher probability of cancer) - there we have a possibility of counter - lawsuit and no need for that.

Much better:

- do not jail people just on insufficient evidence
- if the evidence is sufficient, give rapists long sentences
- and do not free them (in particular repeat offenders) earlier.

How about "three sexual offenses = you are out for the life in jail, no parole"?

The infamous California "three strike" law is bad because once a homeless man was sentenced for life and his last offense was stealing some food from a supermarket. But modifying it to "three sexual strike" is not bad at all. A repeat rapist is probably deserved a rope, but since we do not like the death penalty in Europe, let's give him life sentence, no parole.

BTW:

This is X'mas - New Year time, time of flights to Thailand being fully booked. The availability of space on the airplanes can be greatly increased and the ticket prices greatly reduced if the police would just comb through the passenger lists and cherry-pick the sexual offenders from all European/NAmerican countries (here Serbia or Hungary or countries of ex-USSR are not any better than, say, UK or of course USA). Unfortunately this is the time of year when pedo-s flock together and unfortunately the police keeps it's eye closed because they are going to commit the crime in Thailand.

To bad, there is always a shortage of helping hands in coal mines of northern part of Russia - let them spend the next 25 years in "sunny" Vorkuta, not in Thailand.

hsfgf: "Then what should the penalties be for raping the country?"

Why not ask the US and the 'international community'?
