I know many Serbs that will not travel to EU countries because they think they will be looked down on. Most Serbs, however, most can't afford it.

Albania and Bosnia are next to come by summer 10. Kosovo ? Kosovo should be incluted too.
(uli, 19 December 2009 15:57)

Uli, you couldn't be more wrong..
Albania will get on white schengen at the same time as Turkey, NEVER!

Bosnia is not a problem since 2/3 of the population have or can get Croatian or Serbian passports, no real need for people living in Bosnia to apply for other passports, exept maybe the muslims.

And Kosovo?! Hahaha, forget it, Kosovo will get on white list about the same time as Nauru and Guinea Bissau will be world economical centers, you figure the rest out...

It is a fact that only people with money travel, regardless of nationality or where they reside. If you are American and you don't have money....trust me you will not travel because you are American, you will travel if you can afford it. I sense some jealousy here!

Frans,

Romanians can work in 16 EU Member States.

All EU Member States will be required to lift the restrictions on Romanian workers on 1 January 2014.

Now that Serbs can travel within EU without visas, what else can EU really do for Serbia. Can someone explain to me the real benifit for Serbia if they were to join this gentlemens club ?

You are wrong, Michael. Most Europeans are open and friendly to Serbs. Maybe the individuals like you are not. BTW, don't worry about Serbs not having money - have you been to Belgrade recently? I think you would see that there are plenty of Euros floating around.

In attendance at the airport last night, to send the 50 citizens off, were officials of the French, Italian and Germany embassies, who wished the citizens a safe trip and exciting time traveling through Europe. It's a good thing all Europeans don't share your spite and envy, Ben. Leave your email address, Ben, and maybe some Serbs traveling through the EU will email you an electronic greetings card?

Ivo,

The 7 year restriction is the maximum amount of time that EU Member States can impose on workers from Romania.

Currently, 10 EU Member States impose restrictions on workers from Romania.

Some of these 10 EU Member States said that they will lift the restrictions on workers from Romania on 1 January 2012.

All EU Member States will be required to lift the restrictions on Romanian workers on 1 January 2014.

But remember you are markedly better off in Serbia than say the average Eu citizen who in reality has very little that he,she owns as everything from cars to houses is bought on credit. Zivila Serbia! Sloboda i pravo svima.
(ivo, 19 December 2009 14

Indeed. The only thing Serbia needed was the abolition of visas which gives you the ability to visit any country you want without paying the extortionary ransom for them.

If on the other hand Serbia decided to apply for membership the first thing that would happen will be the customs union in which all tarrifs will be abolished, therefore making western products very competitive and then they will lend you the money at low interest rates to by their good and services.

In the end both people and country will realise they're mortgaged to the hilt.

Sour Mircea? Rumanians can also not work in the EU, so what you want to say with it? (Nor can Americans, Brazilians, etc. etc.) Rumanians are only known in Western Europe as skimmers, gypsies playing the same old music every second, and (child). Are you aware Mircea that in the Netherlands the Rumanians are the the most "hated" people?? Lucky we will not have that with the Serbs. Congratulations.

Mircea, it's the same for most of the world. If I, as an American citizen travel to a foreign country, I have to leave in 90 days. And, I would certain;y need a work permit for work. Why are you trying to put a damper on Serbia's progress? What better rights do you have?

Jason

pre 14 godina

There are some restrictions even though the visa free deal came into force. Serbian citizens do not have the right to settle and work in EU Member States.

Also, Serbian citizens are allowed to stay only a certain period of time in EU Member States.

Mircea,

It is totally normally that citizens in one country do not have the automatic right to live, work, or stay indefinitely in other country. There is nothing unusual in that or specific to Serbia. Nor does it mean that Serbian citizens cannot achieve these rights through regular procedures. There are major diaspora communities throughout the world.

JC

Mircea, so what you keep saying is that Serbs now have the same rights as Americans & other non-Europeans. We can go and visit, but can't live & work. I think we all know that.

Congrats to Serbia and others who can now travel freely...have some fun.

ivo

pre 14 godina

Mircea is right about restrictions on work and length of stay, but lets get this right, Romanians and Bulgarians also have a 7 year restriction on taking employment in certain EU countries, same with Polish citizens. People of Serbia i salute you in your struggle to lift the unfair demonisation that the US and certain EU states have foisted upon you over the past 18 years. But remember you are markedly better off in Serbia than say the average Eu citizen who in reality has very little that he,she owns as everything from cars to houses is bought on credit. Zivila Serbia! Sloboda i pravo svima.

I am so extremely happy that this change has finally happened. I hope that now many Serbians will be able to see much more of the world, as they for so long have wanted bt have been limited in such desires. Serbia is a bit like home to me now, so I am very happy for this day. I'm glad to see that it's officially real, not just some proposal.
