Hague Tribunal mandate extended through 2012

ATM, it was the UN Security Council that extended it while Putin hinted that Russia would not approve further extensions.

So it seems a backroom deal was done. The Netherlands is blocking Serbia's EU admission based on co-operation with the NATO court. The NATO court closes in 2010 so the Netherlands would have to drop its condition as Serbia cannot co-operate with a non-existent court.

So in exchange for an extension the Netherlands agrees to unfreeze the free trade agreement. Serbia then get it one year earlier in exchange for a 2 year extension of the NATO court.

It's a sellout as far as I'm concerned.

This is a bit of a slap across the face for Putin, who stated previously that the mandate would not be extended. I suspect Tadic and co have something to do with this - probably the free trade agreement in exchange for the mandate extension.

I agree with Zoran. There was definitely a back room deal done here to extend the mandate of this fake political kangaroo court. We will see soon what that deal was. Perhaps it is a positive outcome of the ICJ verdict to Serbia's favour?
I still look at this as a sell out. Russia should have discontinued this anti-Serb circus at the Hague.

Who cares, they can extend it to 3112 if they like it will not affect Serbia. The Dutch are looking at ways out of their position and will, surprise, surprise, come to the conclusion by mid 2010 that Serbia has complied with all requests.
As any dying or wounded animal, the US is striking out at all. Can anyone believe that they were stupid enough to lash out at China at Copenhagen? but they were publically humiliated by the head of the Chinese delegation and the US ambassador just sat there and hung his head. How humiliating! ha! ha! You don’t read about this in western the free press.

It appears that some (again) wake up from hibernation. So much for the defaiming campaign "NATO-Court". When even China and Russia don't regard that... And so much for Putin's word. This guy sold out Serbia already in 2003 when withdrawing troops from Kosovo, while increasing presence in Caucasia. This is so obvious but it still doesn't prevent (so-called) Russia-Serbia friendship demagogues to claim the opposite. Well, then continue with your hibernation.

Well how about coming up for some fresh air and having a good look around you. For starters the ICJ and the Hague Tribunal are two different organizations with the latter established by the US to punish anyone that made them look stupid during the Balkan conflict. I wonder how many they will send to prison for their current failures in Iraq and Afghanistan? If you are thinking of the International Criminal Court, well your beloved US is not a signatory, so much for democracy and justice, eh!
I like that bit about Serbs being only interested in their own interests, as if the US/EU only got involved because of their of love of justice and freedom. I always enjoy one sided comments, they are so much easier to pull apart.

It didn't take long for the selective justice supporter to show his head. I certainly have more respect for those supporting universal justice but I question whether "justice" is doing more harm than good? As Ghandi said "an eye for an eye and the whole world goes blind". It looks like we're nearly there!

We need to aim for truth and reconciliation, peace and prosperity instead of poking each other's eyes all of the time. That's is the true path to lasting peace, not one that continues to divide everyone.

EU wants this to go on so stop turning things in to a Tadic or Putin.

thank you, michael, but allow me to (gently) correct you. serbia will never capture all of its war criminals, not even a significant %, nor has any intention to do so. nor is anyone (save some victim groups and human rights groups and individuals) putting any meaningful pressure on the belgrade regime to do so.

however, they HAVE to turn in the major "alleged" mass murderers to the UN court.

and perhaps all the talk about nato is not totally off the mark. i've always hated the military (ies) and everthing it stands for, but where would we be w/out nato, at least in the balkans? at the very mercy of evil, as has anyway been the case over many years when nato refused or was "unable" to act. so let's just say that i have come to appreciate nato and our military potential, though never unquestionably.

we will see mladic and the other alleged mass murderers in court, but only if we exhibit the spine, manifest the will to make it so.

god bless the tribunal. imperfect as it is, it's the best we mere mortals can achieve today. we can all imagine the world without such "kangaroo" courts.

Here's the paradox of Serbian politics: when it comes to the international court to jail Serbian and Bosnian Serb war criminals who committed genocide then the Serbs are opposed to the court, but if they believe that it can help them prevent further recognitions of Kosovo then they are for the court. When it comes to convicting Serbian war criminals for war crimes they committed they are against the court, but when it comes to convicting non-Serb war criminals they are for the court. They want NATO to be held responsible for bombing Serbia but do not want the Serbian state which under Milosevic became a fascist aggressor state to pay the consequences of their actions. They can be for and against the international legal system at the same time depending on if the outcome suits them or not. It is very obvious that the Serbs are only interested in their own interests and preferences and couldn't care less about real justice or reconciliation in the region. This type of selfish and immature behavior is unacceptable and will lead to a deteriorating situation in the region.
