But I don't see any reason someone who fills out a visa application today would be refused if he writes "iPod, Nike, laptop, GPS" under the reason to visit the States.
(Ataman, 17 December 2009 16:28)

Once again you made my day, earlier this year my sister went to the American embassy in Brasilia and she listed Iphone and Apple Laptop as one of the reasons why she wanted to go to the U.S and even though she didn't meet half of the requirements, the U.S government gave her a Tourist Visa for 5 years, she already went there and brought the things that she wanted(Iphone),but she could stay there if she wanted too.

PRN:

are you really THAT desperate to believe, that Serbia´s government only doesn´t "tell the truth" to the serbian poeple?

jesus, you must be VERY desperate, indeed.

now you even know what the serb officials do not dare to expose... =)

but, if YOU write that, it will very likely be the truth!

:)

as for Clinton:

she can come to Serbia, of course, everything that improves the Serbo-american relations is welcome, but one thing should be clear even to the most naive k-albanian kiddie...

there is no future for "kosovah"...

and improvement of these relations is certainly good for you too, my dear albanian friends! you don´t have to fear anything, since autonomy is good enough for you...

Curious as to who you think could visit the PX at Bondsteel?
(pss, 16 December 2009 23:15)

Under normal circumstances every better village all across East Europe has their very own American ex-gastarbajter. It's a family which spent years or decades overseas and has dual citizenship. It is normal that if they fly to visit the States again they carry a long list what to bring to neighbors. That list consists mostly of shoes, iPods, laptops.

In some places like Germany, BiH, Italy the situation is easier because of PX. How to get in is a different question and I won't discuss it openly for obvious reasons ;-)

I did not try (yet) with the US base near Urosevac ("Camp Bondsteel") but apparently it was less restricted and presenting the US passport was good enough in the past. That - according the rumors - changed recently. I can (and will) try it one day in person, but one needs to be more resourceful.

In any case it is closer to us and I am more often in that area than in Germany, so it's worth to try.

One can argue, that buying anything at PX means supporting Dick Cheney directly since almost everywhere his company (Halliburton) is one of the organizers of the shopping infrastructure.

Unfortunately, doing anything else is not much better. For instance if you buy gasoline for your car than you either support the same Dick Cheney even more directly or some Russian oligarhs (Lukoil). And since these Russian oligarkhs are buddies with Dick - it's all essentially the same.

Besides, inshallah, the president of Lukoil is a great Russian whose name is Vahid Yusufoğlu Alakhbarov. That, too, spoils the patriotic feelings to a great degree. :-(

mrs. Clinton known for her change of direction for the sake of staying in power did it again. No more 'barbaric'
Serbs, mrs Clinton? This one is good enough for a cordial handshake. And before you know is she is coming to Belgrade!

'the Hungarian urban culture is full of such "masterpieces" about almost everyone. '

U.S. culture used to be full of ethnic jokes, too, but now we're so politically correct no one dares to tell them. Or gets them - you have to know the stereotype of a nationality in most cases, and these are being forgotten. A pity, in a way. (Perhaps Hungarians are too individualistic for other countries to have stereotypes of them as a nationality?

Anyway, you didn't mention jokes at Americans' expense in Hungarian. Almost everyone complains that we can't learn foreign languages, for example. I know the Czech complain that we're always offering advice, usually unwanted, but that's in our genetic code - impossible to prevent even if the individual tries.

Ataman

pre 14 godina

Ataman, play fair: most people can handle something straightforward in Hungarian like a chemical patent, but old political jokes should be ruled out in polite conversation.

Enver küzdj és bízva bízzál!

Ok, it's a play on "Ember küzdj és bízva bízzál! " - "Oh, Man strive on, have faith and trust"

And Enver = Enver Hodzsa?

I still don't get it (as a joke). In the current context.

How about an explication?
(Amer, 16 December 2009 22:00)

Deepest respect, Amer for your language skills. This joke was intent for Joe and Szemi tough, but with this posting you earned some very serious respect. Not every American or Albanian can understand Russian to the degree you do - but to understand that twisted Hungarian joke - that is somewhat really special.

Yes, indeed, this is a play with the words "Ember" versus "Enver" (Hodzsa/Hoxha). The meaning of the original joke is:

"you, Albanians can strive and can have faith - but you are way to small to be a power". It is of the series like:

- "Miért bukkan fel az albán tengeralattjáró a víz színére olyan gyakran?"
- "Hogy az evezösök levegöt vegyenek"

(- "Why does submerge the Albanian submarine so often?"
- "To let the rowers take some fresh air")

I am well aware of the rudeness and political incorrectness of the above, but the Hungarian urban culture is full of such "masterpieces" about almost everyone.

(- "Mi volt a neve az Izraeli jégkorongozónak?
- "Majse Greestem" )

I leave out the Chinese and Russian jokes because their "quality" is even lower and B92 would censor them even in Hungarian.

What is unfair: I am not aware, there are Hungarian jokes in Albania, Israel, Russia or China despite that quite a few Hungarians deserved them.

The "Ember" versus "Enver" joke is not that rude, of course - you need not just to know Hungarian, but also know the work of Imre Madách to understand it. Besides - isn't it true?

-- Yeah yeah we know, the land's been yours for the last 5,000 years. Still, one would think for a region that's been yours since before the Pyramids you'd have a better grip on owning it than relying on others (currently the US) to control it so you can wave your own flags and write nice little history books claiming it's been yours for millenia.
(Mike, 17 December 2009 01:04)

Spot on Mike. I really can't believe they keep churning out that garbage. If I was an ALbanian I'd be embarrassed to claim to have been in the Balkans. I mean look it ALbania itself let alone Kosovo. People were fleeing ALbania to live in Kosovo but me thinks we will winess a reversal of that trend. Just remember Belgrade is paying for nothing and the Serbian people are just waiting.

(Mike, 17 December 2009 01:04)

From some point of view that 5000 years is correct, the problem is the simplification. Ghegs seem to be an isolated "island" of pre-Indo-Europeans (think: Bask-Etrusk-Georgian "islands" all over the continent). One of the interesting maybe related questions is: why the early Georgian kingdom was called "Iveria" - but the entire peninsula in the West is "Iberia".

Quite a few sources consider Ghegs being like Basks or Georgians: remains of than-numerous related tribes who lived all over Europe before ever Illyrians or Celts came.

"after 30 mins, Malawi recognizes." (genti)

-- Now I'm not 100% certain on this, so take it with some margin of estimated error, but I somehow doubt this is going to tip the scales in decisive favor of the Albanians. If Saudi Arabia's and New Zealand's recognition got you no closer to crossing the Ibar or stopping Feith from carving out more Serbian municipalities, I think it's safe to say Malawi's recognition won't either.

'On rise,' meaning Serbia will do exactly what US wants them too.

We knew the day will come.
(aRta, 16 December 2009 17:32)

There is no correct answer to that: we will experience that increasingly US will apply less direct pressure worldwide to make others do what they want. The main reason is both economy and politics. Economy is obvious, as for politics - here no one is sure, what USA does really want to begin with, not even USA.

Compare it with the crisis of Soviet Union and you also may compare Obama with Gorbachyov.

-------

At least there's no suggestion this time that he made the whole thing up.
(Amer, 16 December 2009 17:02)

I expect some positive development, mostly related to economy. There are many big problems even Germans or British experience doing business with the States - these problems will stay because that is just the nature of beast. Otherwise we may see normalization (like giving JAT landing rights) and most optimistically "visa-free" (Hungarian-style) travel of Serbs and Croats to the States; maybe Montenegro, too. The biggest two parts of visa-free travel to the States is almost there:

- low rate of refusal (actually: not sure about the US, but the rate of refusal at Canadian consulate is already practically nil)
- biometric passport

This is rather symbolic - most of the people who fill the airplanes are either dual citizens or their relatives. With Dollar being so low some tourist agencies do advertise USA as shopping holiday for Serbs. There the visa-free travel can help. But I don't see any reason someone who fills out a visa application today would be refused if he writes "iPod, Nike, laptop, GPS" under the reason to visit the States.

Before, you could visit the PX at Camp Bondsteel for that reason - but apparently that little loophole is closed by the new commander. So some Albanians are probably flying, too.

Jeremic should have Hillary come to Serbia to coincide with "Operation Storm Day". The two could watch the Croat festivities, concerts and other commemorating celebrations on satellite TV while having lunch.
Many credible VIP are privately and openly saying that the Croats took full advantage of the West's "good will" in order to carry out their own campaign of ethnically cleansing and murdering innocent civilians, which included untold numbers of women and children. If the West rewards the Croats the legal Serbian territory of Kraina and does not return the ethnically cleansed Serbs to their land and homes, then the sane and moral world will decide who really orchestrated this brutal and shameful crime against humanity. And then the sane and the moral will make it right.

Ye shall know them by their fruits.

Building inspectors could be asked by the Mayor to see if a school was built according to the building laws.

The building inspectors could take measurements of the dimensions of the foundation and laboratory test results of the concrete can be quoted.

Many other types of analysis would be done to discover if the school was built according to the written building laws.

What the International Community wants to know is if there is a legal procedure for Kosovo to unilaterally declare independence while under UNSCR 1244.

If there is a legal procedure to declare independence while under UNSCR 1244, then the International Community wants to know if the procedures were followed legally and precisely as stipulated in writing.

There are many people who think that a Balkans Conference is a good way to achieve a legal and internationally acceptable compromise to the Kosovo matter.

Ataman

Ataman

Yeah yeah we know, the land's been yours for the last 5,000 years.

Amer

pre 14 godina

Don't worry PRN et al, Bill still loves you. And if you ever feel jilted by him, you can always take comfort in the bromance shared between Holbrook and Thaci.

She drove the car. Her driver was busy, Bill asked him to bring a fat girl in blue dress into his office.

An annoyance? Perhaps. Spoiling the fun? Hardly. Let me guess: you actually take Christopher Dell at his word :)

Guys, if you're going to attempt to steal our land at least come up with your own name for Kosovo. Don't distort our language as well.
It's Kosovo as it is written in media all over the world, not Kosova.

No worry Peggy name will be changed to Dardania as the flag but first we need to play it cool.

The only people ever allowed to shop at Bondsteel was military personnel and some US civilian personnel. This I know.
Anyone else who had anything that came from the PX there, had it bought for them.

Amer
