Tabalija 103,

My country, Romania, joined the EU on 1 January 2007.

I am proud to be a citizen of the EU.

If Basescu showed you the IMF
terms and conditions imposed on Romania for $20 billion+ loans you probably wouldn't be so proud.

Mircea you're probably right. Are you from Romania? I think that's a Romanian name? When do you think Romania will join? I like that country. If Romania joins I want Serbia to join too even if I'm no fan of Eu.

"I expect this to be an option once Serbians become disillusioned with this whole project and realise they won't become instant millionaires, that competition for jobs is fierce (even for cleaners) and that Serbia isn't so bad after all."

True, even if €USSR is like Hotel California("you can sign out any time you like but you can never leave") joining it will impose much worse consequenses in terms of higher unemployment extreme poverty for the many and more money to a few already rich, further cuts privatizing and downsizing of health care and other important infrastructure, than now.

Zoran,

Serbia will be prepared to join the EU in 2018. You will surely have time for one more election before Serbia joins the EU.

Iceland is the only country which is on the fast-track to EU membership.

Iceland will join the EU
on 1 January 2012 with Croatia.

"The time is not too far away, it is near. I have told you enough," Tadić was quoted as saying.

Tadic, Serbia is behind Macedonia and Montenegro in the EU accession process. If Serbia does not apply for EU candidacy soon Serbia will fall even further behind.

Montenegro will begin accession negotiations with the EU in 2011. Macedonia will probably begin accession negotiations in 2010.

Without SSA green light you cannot apply for the EU candidacy. Tadic you will be gone by the year 2013 when you will (maybe) allowed to apply for such a status.

There are more to do than to apply for EU candidacy.

Economy in Serbia is the worst in the region,(people dying of hunger) and politically you have no relations with practically none of your neighbours.

Yes, I have to agree. The clock is ticking not only for Serbia but also the EU and US. I expect to have one more election before membership is offered, however, it looks like this process is being accelerated for Serbia so who knows?

One positive aspect of the Lisbon Treaty is that it describes membership as voluntary and exiting the EU can be achieved fairly easily so not all is lost.

I expect this to be an option once Serbians become disillusioned with this whole project and realise they won't become instant millionaires, that competition for jobs is fierce (even for cleaners) and that Serbia isn't so bad after all.
