Georgia - which hasn't joined yet, of course - is sending a large contingent to Afghanistan (a heavy brigade and two light companies - about 1000 men) specifically so they gain experience in actual fighting. For some reason they think this might come in handy some day.
(Amer, 16 December 2009 16:41)

Why? So they can get their behind kicked by the Russians again. They are going to Afghanistan because Shakashvilli is being told what to do by the US. I think you K-ALbs should be volunteering in droves to show your appreciation. I'm sure the Talibs will greet you warmly.

Meanwhile Albania is a fullfledged member of NATO (with veto right), a signed SAA, applied for membership in EU.
(Mirub Jager, 15 December 2009 17:07)

That does not mean anything. It was just political issue to thank Albania for fighting for Bush in Avganistan.

Even though you are member of NATO signed SAA, applied for membership in EU, it does not mean that you will not become member of EU before Serbia.

Do you wanna bet?

One just has to think about a fact. Albania as a member of NATO can have troops in Kosovo and Bosnia while Serb military can watch on their binoculars beyond the border.

My European intuition says if I was a Serb that would be a reason enough to join NATO.

How about $20 billion of aid ($50Billion in today's value), that made your life so much better for so many years. It was not Russia who gave you that money, it was the west, and esspecially US. At least have some integrity to recognize this help before you become a Russian pawn in the Balkans.
(Denis, 15 December 2009 05:00)

So according to your logic, the US gives out money without strings but the Russians are evil and only give to enslave you. I love this simplistic view of the world.

Anyway you Albanians did get a huge chunk of that money with free electricity, land taxes etc. so I would see why your greatfull. This is now long gone, but you might ask your US friends for a cent or two, if they have any left.

'Albanian and Croatian military equipment and advances could not catch up with American in terms of quantity or quality for another 200 years.'

Like the other smaller Nato countries they will probably offer specialized units - demining, chem-bio-nuclear decontamination, medical facilities, logistics of various kinds.

Mirub Jager,

Albania and Croatia have nothing to offer NATO in terms of military equipment. Albanian and Croatian military equipment and advances could not catch up with American in terms of quantity or quality for another 200 years. I think this is pretty obvious.
The only thing they can offer them are young men and women who will be sent to die in the colonial wars as well as free use of their land - think of it as unforced occupation

I know one thing for sure - If God forbid any American enemy from the East is to declare war, they're not going to be blowing Serbia up - they'll be blowing American bases/allies/stations and military cooperators.

Serbia has no place in such aggressive, destructive pact.

It is almost impossible how a country such as Serbia is presently in total state of confusion.

You have a gov't who wants nothing more than sign SAA with EU or start membership talks with the same. However, on the other side you have most of population against it (the posters here make it seem so). Then you have the military and gov't as well begging to join NATO. Then you have our dear posters scorning Nato for what it is and what it does.

Meanwhile Albania is a fullfledged member of NATO (with veto right), a signed SAA, applied for membership in EU.

I would not answer that question too early.

NATO bombed us in 1999, illegaly and mercilessly and helped the criminal greater-albanian expansion on southern serbian territory.

on the other side, that was NATO of 1999, we should take into account that in the future Serbia could use NATO-forces to neutralize those criminal elements poisoning southern Serbia.

Serbia as a member could come to the point to ask the alliance, or at least those parts of the alliance that support Serbia, to help in Serbia in that cause.

so, let´s just see what future brings - it is just not definitely said that NATO-accession would be definitely and solely bad for Serbia.

but that´s a question, as I said in the beginning, that should be answered later, much later.

It's really not clear even why this organization still exist? What is its purpose?

And it's even harder to see how would Serbia benefit from joining NATO?
If you look at the map, you will see that the region is surrounded by NATO countries.
Every potential agressor (Iran? North Korea? Not likely.) would have to go through NATO land or airspace to get to Serbia.
The only one that could possibly attack Serbia is NATO itself.

It would show to me that the government in Belgrade places more faith in the dollar than its Nation's soul.
Just look at what NATO has done to Serbia over the last 2 decades. All the senseless killing and destruction carried out at the behest of certain ugly Western governments who also conjured up malicious lies against Serbia so as to hoodwink the International Community.
My country, Ireland, is not, nor has ever been in NATO and we have done quite well as a Nation without them and we are actually in the North Atlantic Ocean.

One just has to think about a fact. Albania as a member of NATO can have troops in Kosovo and Bosnia while Serb military can watch on their binoculars beyond the border.

My European intuition says if I was a Serb that would be a reason enough to join NATO.

You are wrong - Albania only can send cannon fodder for Afghanistan ;) At December 2 president Sali Berisha said that Albania will send more soldiers for Afghanistan mountains to kill their muslim brothers. Are You happy????

It's really not clear even why this organization still exist? What is its purpose?

And it's even harder to see how would Serbia benefit from joining NATO?
If you look at the map, you will see that the region is surrounded by NATO countries.
Every potential agressor (Iran? North Korea? Not likely.) would have to go through NATO land or airspace to get to Serbia.
The only one that could possibly attack Serbia is NATO itself.
Is he suggesting that we should join to be safe from their attack?
Looks like G.W. Bush's "If you are not with us, you are against us" idea is thriving without G.W. Bush.

'Albanian and Croatian military equipment and advances could not catch up with American in terms of quantity or quality for another 200 years.'

Like the other smaller Nato countries they will probably offer specialized units - demining, chem-bio-nuclear decontamination, medical facilities, logistics of various kinds.
