Ataman,

In my posting I exposed the untruth of your assertions. In your very weak response indirectly you acknowledged that you greatly exagerated.
Whenever you tend to do so please keep in mind that some people, who read your comments are pretty well informed, you can not assume that the readers are totally ignorant.

Joe,

The old dirty trick to fool a poor Hungarian villager was to promise him "vitézi föld" in the occupied territory. In the case if he would die, his surviving family would get that (non-existing) little field or lot.

Hungary had very bad problem of zsellérs (peasants without field) between the WW-I and WW-II. These people could literally kill - just to get some piece of earth to work on.

There is nothing super-cruel in the Hungarian psychology, just some politicians wanted to assure the highest fighting morale. And often the cruel treatment of local population in Ukraine was encouraged "from above" in the false hope, the fighting morale will be kept high at that cost.

This is why torturing the villagers was a horrible mistake by Tito - but regarding nazi or nyilas officers: I just can't shed tears even if they would be fed to lions, Nero-style.

Ataman,

When it comes to Hungarian behavior in occupied territories in the Ukraine or Vojvodina there is generally your version and an other version much closer to the truth. I have several Ukranian friends and colleagues. I had long discussions with them about the occupation and all the horrors they went through. They told me that sometimes their family members were shot in front of the whole family by Germans. They also told me that the Germans could have won in Russia if the people of the occupied territories would not have been treated so crually by the Germans. They never ever mentioned bad treatement by Hungarians. They were no reason for them to hide the truth. I am just wondering how most Ukrainians would react to your version of events.

Very true that many romanians fought against Nazis, the town of Zrenjanin in Serbia was re-named after a resistance fighter who was of romanian decent.

Let us revise Koštunica’s policy regarding Kosovo. One example: He and his officials suggested that all policemen of Serbian nationality working for the Kosovo police force should step down, and lots of them complied with the suggestion. And what followed? They lost their jobs, nobody cared for them and their families and finally they changed their minds, re-applied for the same jobs in the Kosovo police force. Another example: He insisted that passenger rail transport should be re-established in Kosovo run by Serbian Ministry of Transport. What happened? The first train was trapped and detained near Mitrovica. If he were elected Prime minister now, he would provoke ethnic turbulence in Vojvodina. My conclusion is that it is high time he retired and joined a pensioners’ club or stayed at home and stroked his cat.

I thought romanians were the ones who sided with the nazis and were their most willing allies.

Romanians did "betray" Hitler at very first opportunity tough. In occupied territories (Russia, Ukraina) Romanian and Italian troops were the most easy on local population. Regular German army was so-so, rather bad. The worst hands-down was the Hungarian army. Russians / Jewish population of Ukraina considered "Waffen SS" to be angels compared with Hungarians.

I spoke with many who survived the ordeal - a fair German officer would warn the involved ahead of time if the German occupation force wold be moved out and Hungarian move in. Regular German troops would close an eye and allow the involved pack and go - what they usually did ASAP.

As for Romanians and Italians - they did barter even with Soviet partizans, providing them ammunition in exchange for.... girls. Germans did fight them, Hungarians did exterminate everything what was moving and usually pretty brutally.

This is why I wrote recently that while I consider the action of Tito partizans impaling (Vlad Tepes - style) the Hungarian organizer of Novi Sad massacre pretty cruel - I did not lose a minute of sleep over that fact. That was a way going to hell in well-deserved style.
