Yes, this is what it is all about, playing the game and keeping one step ahead and one foot in either camp. This is real politics at work. Well done Tadic. It looks like Serbs are on the way to having a life beyond the grave of the 1990's

This is the deal Serbia has with Russia which has been revised to include many other goods. This is what will attract Fiat, Ikea and many other major European players to Serbia. Coupled with it's geographic position at the "crossroads" and at the time of economic change it would be stupid not to take full advantage.
Nationalists, Socialists, Orthodox, Muslims etc remember we are all Serbians first.

Eu is a good thing it is also done with Russia's blessing. It means now EU companies can now produce in Serbia to export favourably to Russian markets and perhaps soon to central and far eastern Asian markets. It means the focus in terms of economy is to invest in Serbia to export to the emerging markets, a position no other EU country has.Netherlands sees the writing on the wall as the EU focuses away from Rotterdamm and US markets to Beograd and Eastern markets.
This will be great for the average Serb earning regular income and the Gov't earning billions in tax revenue per year.Russia should be thanked and appreciated for it's continual support.
As a Serb from the diaspora good luck to all those who actually endured years and hopefully only good times ahead.

Congratulations, this seems like a sensible compromise.

Now, maybe, somebody will explain what it means in practical terms?
(Amer, 7 December 2009 18:54)

*** somewhat *** less bureaucratic and tariff barriers for trade; somewhat easier to exchange students / workers. Every SAA is very country-specific and the devil is in details we do not know.

---

Fiat will be able to sell cars made in Serbia more cheaply in Europe, for example?
(Amer, 7 December 2009 18:54)

Depending on what the particular SAA does allow. Not sure about cars. Very likely not. For instance, Serbia has a similar (actually: closer) association with Russia - with cars made by foreign companies being AFAIK explicitly excluded. I feel more pain for Russian-made Kia minivans than for that sorry piece of ... Fiat. Sorry to be a jerk, but I would rather see in Kragujevac Honda / Toyota / Nissan, at worst - Kia but not the Fiat.

Anyway, good for SAA to be in place - but it is overhyped.

Will Serbia apply for EU candidacy this month?
(Mircea, 7 December 2009 18:18)

Sure, they will just wait for Debreþîn to apply for candidacy in România Mare first. :-P

Personally I am anti EU and hope that Serbia never joins it, but for Serbs that see this as something of a benefit don’t concern yourselves too much because the agreement will be unfrozen faster than you think and before 2010. This is only EU double talk.

The EU would never have gone down this path if it wasn’t necessary for them or for their benefit. If they could wave a magic wand and undo overnight the embargoes and sanctions they placed on Serbia and not appear foolish it would happen at this moment. Even the Dutch are back tracking on their earlier stance of no Mladic, no agreement.

Regardless of what has been said in the media, it will take an enormous effort to convince the large majority of Serbs to see the EU in a positive light or for that matter agree to join it. The current government would be jumping for joy if that was the case and they would have lodged an application in July this year. Forget all about the nonsense coming out of Brussels; that place should be know as Circus Maximus with the only thing missing is a ring master to keep all the animals under control.

Changes are on the horizon and that is the reason for all this activity. These changes start next year in Nis with the arrival of the Russians.

i don't care what anyone thinks about the eu or anything. to my mind this is a great moment when we should all laugh about the people who were saying thanks to holland for their "principled" stance and similar nonsense.

Another overdue step forward!

Am woundering where all the fortune tellers disappeared...

Dean, you might be right on certain of your critics on EU but you live in holland and I guess it's your choice, so either you made a bad choice or..., likewise you strongly criticized the current govnt in Serbia, I guess you could have the choice to come back and work for the nikolic, kostunica and co.
Am just woundering at the end what is your ideal and where you see Serbia moving forward...

Another step to nowhere.

Read this news as Stabilisation and Association Agreement - SAA, for which it was applied in the spring of 2008, now two years later is stil not verified and it may, but only may, be verified in June of 2010.
So long for the ones who think that we are heading faster or fast toward EU. Just one condition less after almost two years on in lifetime.

For me this would be just that and just enough: free trade deal and Schengen free travel. All done for Serbian EU sceptics. Thanks Tadic team on that. No more needed.

For the ones in love with EU, get ready for the decades of conditions to be implemented by Serbia to come.
Only question is are you gonna live in all of that?

Well, it's about time. After Tadic unilaterally introduced the trade agreement, it has cost Serbia €600 million while the Government was taking out loans to support the budget. This has not come cheap to Serbia.

Bravo for Tadic & co!
These gentleman know what they're after and know how to play the game.
Finally, we've got a competent president and a couple of ministers. God bless!
