NATO carries out such exercises all the time, particularly simulated nuclear attacks on Russia and China, along with 'interventions' in fictitious states that bear no resemblance in any way to Bosnia. At all.

As for this Russian exercise, they could have just taken the NATO route and called the countries Bellonia & Pellonia, much like the thinly disguised NATO exercises. I won't mention NATO planes flying up and down the Baltics either.

The Russians and Belorussians do have a valid reason for this exercise, even if it is out dated. Back in 2005 Poland started bleating loudly (in July/August of course) over the 'Union of Poles in Belarus'.

They tried to drag in the rest of the EU, but the Germans told them to STFU and the whole sorry story died down.

Joe,

What you refer to is only a little part of Russian Far East (and even that article writes about it).China has never occupied more than 5 percent of total area of siberia and rfe and it was in the 13th century anyway. If you can provide me with any historic map which shows the oppsite I would highly appricate it.It would be a big surprise to me a person who has read not only some articles but several books about that region(some of my family members were there on exhile therefor my interest in the region.)

You are absolutely right. That "exercise" was nothing else than provocation. And there will be more of that kind. Imperialistic, bellicose Russia at her best. Most Europeans will see that the existence of NATO is justified just like during the cold war.

It's incredible a small and virtually bankrupt country with a dark past-remember all those latvian volunteers on the SS units- attempting to show some muscle to its neighbours (Saakshvili like).

It's also worth mentioning that Latvia has 30% population of Russians who are still mostly kept us non-citizens and who almost completely kept out of government.

My advice to them will be to live the ghosts of the past behind and try to form good neighbouring relations with Belaruss and the Russians instead of acting in a manner which could be interpreted as hostile.

This is 100% impossible for them because once they admit the reality, they cease to exist as such.

Ultimately, I think, military exercise is not the proper answer. What Latvians should do is just straight declare war on Russians and invade the country. They do have both the manpower and the might to execute that in Blitzkrieg-manner. The best timing for that would be April 1, 2010.
