Under the guise of a humanitarian base (or Fire station with firefighters - hehehe), the Russians have finally opened a new beach head for Balkan economic, energy, political and possible military influence. With the Americans and some EU countries angry/jealous at the new energy route, the Russians want to safeguard the region from any possible incursions/threats (also known as "fires") on its now sphere of influence. In the end, watch Serbia's economic and political influence grow louder in the next few years, as it is one of the most important trade routes and now energy gate.

And what has Russia got from its neighbors? Under constant attack, invasion and destruction from East, West & South for hundreds of years. The Poles, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Swedes etc. etc.

Yes of course, it has all been one way, peace and light from Russia's neighbors, darkness and war from Russia. What stunning ignorance and historical illiteracy.

Mircea, Serbia is in a much better position than Romania when it comes to debt, however, this EU learning government isn't making the situation any better. Debt is part of the control game.

Adrian, don't worry. Russian emergency centres in Serbia are not a threat to Romania. It is just to protect Serbia and Russian interests (such as possible pipeline fires) so unless you are called upon to threaten our border then all will be fine. I'm sure we are all mature enough to keep the peace.

Good news for Romania!Nowit will be much easier to convince NATO HQ that there is a real danger at our border and that we need a more significant military presence in our country.
-----
US just decided to built two NEW bases in Bulgaria and Romania! Serbia, you are playing a very very very very dangerous game. Bulgars and Romanians do not like Russians, at all, specially not near their border.

Between Bondsteel, Aviano, these two new bases and Ramstein in Germany US is ready for the Russian firefighters. Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Albania and Romania (all NATO members) can help if need be.

"A few days earlier the U.S. armed forces publication Stars and Stripes announced that the Pentagon will spend an additional $110 million to upgrade two of the seven military bases in Bulgaria and Romania it acquired the use of in agreements signed in 2005 and 2006. "

Mircea, Romania's economy was killed during the USSR days and it will also die during your rule in the €USSR. You managed to pick the wrong side twice in histoy. Romania has over $100 billion of debt. It's easy to prosper on credit but sooner or later someone will come knocking on your door.

Adrian, who is going to pay for extra NATO troops at your border and who is going to supply those troops? The coalition of the unwilling is stretched to the limit and they are struggling to get troops for Afghanistan. However you may be lucky enough to get a deployment of Albanians - but beware, they'll probably claim part of Romania in return.

look how Nato reacts, they try to get their puppies in, croatia and montenegro intereseted all of a sudden. well you know what, they can get jobs for unqualified workforce in the base :) but they wont be able to report much back.

And it makes sense that it's at the airport. its a FOS guys, get used to it. something really important happened on 20 october this year.
And let me tell you people are pretty excited about it over here.

This is another one of Putin's "covert" and classy answers (like in Georgia) to someones dream and our nightmare of a new world order.Like in a 007 movie, Putin is the new James Bond that always outsmarts the "bad guys".He is wiser than a 100 year old Chinese merchant, more powerfull than 100 times one needs be, he can fly to space stations in the sky, he can "rock and roll" any super star--he is the new dadio on the block, he is *PUTINMAN*!!!

szemi, what good has Russia brought to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe?

What good has Russia brought to Poland and Hungary?

The Russians destroyed the economies of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe during the 50 years of communism.

Aaaaa ,"Dragan but please don't involve Croatia or Montenegro." We Croatians can help we have 24 new fire fighting aircraft to help with and I heard Montenegro just got 3 new ones. We can drop either water or gasoline on those pesky fires would it not look spectacular. But it definitely has to be a all spectacular Pan Slavic performance sorry but Greece can not be in it. More or less we can understand each other I have no clue what the Greeks are talking about. Any ways they are so preoccupied with putting out their own fires. So what do you think Dragan changed your mind?

Russia will never be isolated. I suppose you can try it but then you will have to go backwards and replace you gas appliances with wood burning stoves from the past. Feel free to disconnect now if you want. Winter is just around the corner in your part of the world.

Thank you Sergei for this emergency center (hehe), but please don't involve Croatia or Montenegro in the construction efforts (they will just be spies for US/Germany), Serbia have all the resources to cover your needs. Greece can help also. And please don't involve SuNATOvac either.
We will need this emergency center to put out some Kosovo fires in the future.

What can you say Russia and Serbia are not fighters but fire fighters. They are just building a fire station in Niš to put out fires. That others try to put out by pouring more gasoline on them. Russia has to protect its investments and its new client state Serbia. Like the new pipe line it mite go up but the Russian fire station will be rite in Niš to deal with it. How fortunate did not some German Kaiser said the world will be plunged in to war over some silly incident in the Balkans he was proven right a déjà vu is on its way.

If the Iranian missile threat is as real as the Americans claim, then the Russians will need to protect their troops in Nis. A few SA-300 missile batteries should do it. With these in place no rogue state would dare launch an attack against Serbia.

Zoran

Konuzin mentioned Greece, Montenegro and Croatia in this context, "which suffer the most from wildfires during summer".

This "emergency centre's" placement in Niš looks like a very strategic move. What a novel idea to have Russia help Serbia and its neighbours with emergencies like wild fires. *wink* *wink*

It is good for Serbia to have Russian assistance centres on its soil and even better when NATO exits in a few years time.
