A grave concern in Kosovo is crime and corruption, money laundering and the deficit in the rule of law, states the European Commission’s latest report.

And in other news.....Christopher Colombus had just discovered new continent. He decided to name it America.

this is hardly a news. Ask any kid old enough to talk anywhere in Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Monte Negro and Kosovo which place is riddled with crime and you'll get the same answer. Kosovo.

Goran.

So basically, to sum up the what they are saying, 'kosova' is an absolute failure.

Political stability? Politics are always stable, assuming that there are elected liars and thieves to keep them afloat. What good is political stability when you are trapped in the middle of a very very very deep proverbial ocean (NOT CREEK) with a hole in the boat and no paddles.

Thanks to the West, Kosovo has become a place best referred to as god's blindspot.

Stop all this independence jazz and follow international law. What good is an 'independent' 'country' if it cant even provide for the most basic and essential needs of the people residing within the territory?

Kosovo independence - almost as stupid as the people who coined it.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure this out.

The albanians have been corrupt for years & by recognizing their independence of STOLEN LAND, just fits the bill perfectly.

and in Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania...Italy, UK, USA (lobbying anyone?). The Kosova state is less than 2 years old, however so they can hide behind that for a few years

are more succesfull than the others. Those things run Balkan countires and wider.
It is not fair to pick on Balkan countries only.
(Olf, 14 October 2009 17:41)

I can bet that if this article was about Serbia, your comment would have been full of vitriol..,
What is so unfair about this report? It was made on Kosovo to describe the bleak situation in Kosovo.
Am sure that you can find reports on other countries too if you are so interested to find out if their situation is similar!
It will be quiet difficult to match this one..., but as an international on the ground you certainly know it!

Following up on Olf's remarks, the EC apparently doesn't consider Kosovo any worse since it is (today) offering it a plan leading to visa liberalization.

I am sure that once that statue of Clinton is unveiled in Pristina's trg Clinton, all will be well in KosovA. Is there a bigger hell hole on earth than what the US created in the Balkans?

Mike

The report mentions things that *are* but offers no solutions in how to fix them. The choice becomes clear: "stability" at the cost of "parallel institutions" or attempting to form a unified government in Pristina at the expense of riling up the Serbian community.

Forget the north, and forget Gracanica. They're gone. Zubin Potok might as well be Subotica to Pristina. Be pragmatic, recognize where the internal boundaries lie, and work from there. The vast majority of K Albanians don't give a damn about what goes on in Mitrovica or Gracania. They want to know what EULEX, by way of Pristina, is going to do to improve their own standard of living. That's a far more needed objective to meet than trying to get everyone to use the same letterhead.

Well Serbia seems to be doing a great job of handling its drug smugglers, human traffickers, and money launderers pretty well. Its track record speaks volumes.

Do me a favor when you look at the Balkans there isn't one group better then the other. They are all the same and commit the same crimes but some are better at hiding their internal affairs better then others.....

Peace to all....

Hey Demi, If you've achieved independence then why are you bothering to turn up at the ICJ? Even more, why are you making a HUGE effort to try to win the case? Doesn't sound like a "country" that is "independent" to me. Kosovo independence is just a dream and will remain that forever.

About the North: I think actually the South is a bigger problem. There is an illegal government there who claims to be governmend of an independent state.

EU and UN should make sure that 1244 and international law is preserved.

Until that time we can expect problems in Kosovo!

Time to act: stop the illegal Kosovo independence.

Who dares to tell the Albanians that even they are not above the law?

Maybe a good task for Obama?

It's sad that it took the Eurocrats so long to realise the state of affairs in kosovo.

Kosovo is a failed state from the outset and became this because western pseudo liberal interventionists keen to expand the Franco-German project called EU had concluded that Serbia was forever a thorn in their sides.

Today kosovo is just an EU protectorate with no economy with rampat crime & corruption living off the handouts from western protectors.

There are no future prospects for kosovo as long as the present impasse continues.

Demi

This problems will be fixed. That is why Eulex is there to help us. Like UnmIk when they helped us achive independence from Serbia. Thanks...

What a waste basket Kosovo has become. Actually this is amazing. The europeans have been here since 99 and still this tiny little territory is hell on earth. Nothing has been done! Serbs, continue the resistantce or you will be overrun by an invasion from Albania.

850 people from the minority population has returned. If they continue to return this fast all remaining people expelled by albanian aggression will be back home by the year 4074.

EU, clear out and let Serbia show you how to deal with drugsmuglers and terrorists.
