Peggy is right. If there was any symptom of the rot in Europe, it must be the failure to protect an entire group of people and their heritage, which is important to everyone in Europe and yet can be destroyed without much problem it seems.

The Pristina govt has made no attempt to bring anyone to justice for the attacks against Serbian people, churches and property in 2004. They haven't even bothered trying to pretend.

There has never been the right level of protection for either Serbian people in Kosovo or their priceless heritage. They are marginalised and live under threat from mindless vandals and thugs every day.

The UN and EU have to do something about the levels of protection and take urgent action to make Kosovo a place where living standards are bearable for all, and Pristina is forced to sit down with Belgrade and find a longterm solution. The US needs to stop preventing this happening and actively help to set it up with the UN and EU.

Someone said here yesterday that things would never move forward with the current leadership in Pristina, and I agree. All of the wartime nationalists and 'skimmers' (those who are there just to feed off the financial honey pot) should make way for the younger more progressive generation.

Everyone (from all groups) just wants a reasonable standard of living and peace.

The only ones who seem content with the current situation are politicians and Eurocrats who have their personal agendas and fat pay cheques.

Imagine how many schools, hospitals, homes and all essential services could be created if the money reached the right people and all levels of corruption were eradicated?! Huge amounts have been wasted on bombs, destruction, political agendas... and yet nobody has seen any improvement.

Seeing the doulbe standards of the Albanins really make me feel sad.

Don't just use rules and the UN as long as they serve your interest.

But I tell you this:

(1) 1244 is still valid. You like it or not!

(2) People in the West really do not want new EU members. Let alone an illegal pseudo-statelet!
FORGET ABOUT JOINING EU!

Ron wrote this,

"The deal was in 1999: the UN will govern Kosovo until there is a mutual agreed deal. There is no mutual agreed deal so the UN keeps governing Kosovo"

I agree with you on this but while UN is governing Kosovo Serbs keep getting killed and their graves keep vandalised. Their monasteries are still at threat of destruction by the Albanians. Refugees are discouraged from returning by threat of violence (proof of that just the ther day a hand grenada was thrown into a house).

UN governing Kosovo is no better than Albanians governing it.

Very simple answer "kosovo-usa" because kosovo being not a legally recognized country, our friend has to choose between a legally Serbian province or a US muppet province...

Looking at all the reports coming one after the other on Kosovo, it looks that the wind has definitely changed direction!

It´s all about AMBOS and the us-occupation CAMP BONDSTEEL & on Serbian soil, nothing else. No serbs no k-albs nothing.

As long as the declining westerm powers can manage to hold on to their land theft & their bypass-russia-oil project, both serbs and their local clients can die for all they care.

Thats why we STILL have an american client regime in Belgrade and hostile €Urocrats dying to ´disintegrate Serbia into €USSR. Get rid of that and invite russia to build up our defences and a russian military base, then we can talk.

Interesting how the UN report now places the blame for instability on the stubborness of Pristina, and lauds the flexibility and pragmatism of Belgrade. The table have almost reversed since the Rugova era. Indeed, if stability in Kosovo is to be achieved, many of the Albanian leaders like Thaci, Ceku, and Haradinaj, have to be given forced retirement. How about in exchange for immunity they withdraw from politics and allow a newer generation of K Albanians with more rational pragmatism take the helm? Give them a posh villa and a wad of cash to settle down in in hopes they'll just go away. While I doubt any Albanian would be willing to "return to Serbia", people like Veton Surroi seem far more intelligent than the Milosevic-era strongmen like Thaci and Haradinaj. Albanians need to focus on what they *have* rather than trying to divert attention from what they're screwing up by playing the nationalist card and making benign threats of taking Mitrovica and Gracanica. Kosovo is internally divided, runs along parallel structures, and will remain partitioned for the indefinite future becuase the powers-that-be are more than happy to allow such an environment to work towards their interests. "Independence" has become such an illusion that even major Western media outlets have begun to refer to Kosovo as a region with contested sovereignty akin to Bosnia or a handful of other parastates.

North KIM is not the problem, BAN's assessment is incorrect. It's the south of Ibar which is the real problem and he should not be afraid to let the truth be clear that the EU is undermining Serbia's territorial integrity and are being downright hypocritical. Kosovo is not a "special case" in any way.

Rick

Yes, yes, yes....EVERYONE wants "normalization" and "cooperation"- but neither of those two ideals can be built on the fact of illegal secession. Where has the world's logic gone. If I bully you and take something that belongs to you, away from you....well how can anyone rational think that these two people should just "normalize" their lives.
You need a basis for cooperation- and that needs to be either unbiased arbitration (hopefully the ICJ) or unbiased discussions (between Serbia and Kosovo)- without arm-twisting, or other nasty tactics. The good thing is that arm-twisting recognitions have pretty much dried up....and that, because of the US's involvements in other wars and their own deflationary economic problems, the US will not have much will to keep this quasi-frankenstein statelet of Kosovo alive much longer. The Serbs simply need to be patient....the truth and true justice will ultimately prevail with the Serbs.

"no one cares what UN has to say" Kosova-USA

If no one in Kosovo cares, why are you clamoring for UN membership and actively lobbying the General Assembly and ICJ to rule in favor of independence?

I think you do care what the UN has to say and it's driving you NUTS that Ban is openly admitting that UN-1244 is in effect, which means no independence!

Kosovo-USA why do you say he speaks empty words? "Even though the authorities in Belgrade have shown an interest in finding a pragmatic approach to addressing certain problems, Priština has been setting pre-conditions." maybe because he is critical of the KLA approach to the situation? Can you not accept that sometimes Belgrade do actually have a pragmatic approach to what for any other country in the world is a very unacceptable and intolerable situation. Try to be even handed in your opinion, accept both sides of the coin and realise that the KLA are not always right, despite what the USA might have you believe. Why do you align yourself with the USA anyway? Just by adding them to your name shows that you dont have the regional interests at heart. The US has its own agenda that has nothing to do with the needs or rights of Serbia and her territory. Before you make comment about my screen name, I use that to identify my nationality and would hasten to add that I do not align myself with my governments shameful actions towards the Serb people in recent years. Both the US and Uk could do well to treat Serbs with the respect they would expect to be treated with themselves. The sooner the inteferring governments start to put the regions wellbeing and interests first above their own egoistic needs then the better all concerned will be, in my own opinion.
