@ Jimbobbilly. The technique is to lead "citizens" through imaginery and elementary emotions, it was invented a couple of centuries ago and is called propaganda. Propaganda is and always was realized through the media not only in Italy and recently (in historical terms) also judicial power became an actor. But is not used only by one party, unless we don’t assume that in politics what is at stake is really a fight between good and evil.
To make short the story, look at the Serbian case. I see a coordinated action of media insisting no presenting Serbia as the pure evil and all the others their victims and of the judicial power (ICTY) for a purely political purpose.
So in both cases I always keep an open door to doubt, what always helped me to find our surprising interpretations of facts.

Leonidas, according to your analysis Italy is inhabited by a majority of braiwashable sub-humans which vote for a guy because is president of a football team. Why not mention also the detrimental effects of spaghetti which may numb the mind...(!)

These are your words and not mine.I was just trying to emphasise the power of the media in determining politics.

I thought it was surprising to see a politician embroiled
in sleaze and corruption to come back stronger as he did in 2008.

To Luigi

Your sarcastic ignorance doesn't merit a reply.Again i wouldn't expect any better from albanians.

i think you give ordinary people too much credit. presidency campaigns have long ago stopped being run on principles and are run on pagentry.
people want a leader that they can relate to, and not one that is appropriate. watch any western electorial advertisement, or news coverage and you'll see that beyond the fluff is nothing.
since all we've been shown is this false veil, yet we continue to support it demonstrates the ability governements have in hearding their people like the sheep that we've all become. even those who see threw it all cannot do anything about it because far too many people are happy with the movie like pictures that are presented without taking further steps to see what's actually there.

though you are correct in suggesting that things aren't always what they look like, but often times things are exactly what they look like, more often than not infact.

Seriously, I think that you honestly believe in what you wrote, but keep the mind open and consider possibile also the unlikley. The dynamics of internal and international politics (which nowaday are thing) and the close relation between media and politics are more complicated than stereotypes or echoed reports. What looks like mud or gold is not always mud or gold.

I am still amazed by the fact one of the most sleazy and corrupt politicians in Europe manages to achieve those levels of adulation he receives in Italy.

The problem is that there isn't any viable alternative.... would love to see this guy in a fresh room for while, then maybe his arrogance will vain a bit!!

All credit to Italian courts for lifting his immunity but i think it will all be in vain because Berlusconi has his means and ways of avoiding the justice net.

He still controls a big chunk of the Italian media and also owns AC milan football club and this partly helps his popularity.
This partly explains how he won his election in 2008.
