This is a remarkable discussion and not the first time that a Serbian politician has suggested that it might be good if Serbia joins NATO -- I just never thought I'd live to see the day. I fully understand why Serbia would NOT want to join, after the illegal war NATO waged in 1999. How could Serbia join with a clear conscious?

At the same time, I know 2 things about politics:

1) that Western politicians (any politician) can spin an argument in any direction they wish and call it PR/Pubilc Relations.

1) There is always more to the story than what is said in the media...much more is going on behind the scenes.

So then is it possible that the West has been using Kosovo as a pawn to get Serbia to join NATO? Would Serbia agree to join NATO if it meant keeping Kosovo? (Along with any other benefits membership might bring...I can't think of any).

Food for thought...

Oh really! I guess they forgot to tell Sweden and Finland. They are NOT NATO member but members of the EU.

Google about the support that Swedish and Finish troops give to NATO /US. There is no doubt which side they lean. Serbia wants to align with Iran, Russia and China while getting in EU and while bashing NATO

“Serbia will be an island in NATO soon, because all the surrounding countries will be in NATO or have NATO forces on their territory. What kind of relations should we have with traditionally friendly countries like Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain, from whom we are expecting and have strong support?” the minister wondered

Well, Serbia is not in NATO now and enjoys a lot of support from her friends so who are you saying that in order to remain friends you need to join NATO?
Minister, why are you lying to your citizens? Why are you trying to upset a good friend like Russia in order to join an organisation which killed many of your people?

Minister, would you also suggest that Serbs join the Nazi party as well after being slaughtered by them in WW2.

Now we know what Tadic is intending to do if elected again.

Think very carefully before you cast your vote.

Oh really! I guess they forgot to tell Sweden and Finland. They are NOT NATO member but members of the EU. And what about Norway and Turkey? NATO members but not members of the EU. It's easier to join NATO then to apply for an ATM card.

Serbia can join anytime it wants. If it really wanted that is. I hope we never join! If we do, we are finished as a nation!

If you get to go to Village Italia during ceremonies when change of command ocurres or national day, you will enjoy fruta demare .There is planty to go aroun and i just love sea food and Italian wine.

Thanks - I wonder, anyone just can drop in? Sea food is fine, but wine is reserved for passengers, not the driver. Otherwise don't think KPS/MUP will be happy.

Is it just me or have the regular albanian posters become more strident and ridiculous in their comments on B92 in the last couple of weeks? I wonder what is bothering them?

As for no Nato no Eu, if that were true, Estonia would not be in NATO (border treaty with russia still unratified) and Bulgaria & Romania would not have been allowed to join the EU because of their rampant corruption.

The EU is, and has been proved 'flexible' on implementation of the acquis communautiare and supposedly other rigid rules that need be applied before joining.

The only real rule is that if your tongue is long and brown enough, you have a much better chance of joining the country club. Once you are in, you can do what you want (which is why France is at the bottom in the league of EU MS that fail to implement EC Directives). Whatever!

No Serbia in EU & NATO, no 'Kosova' in EU & NATO. What a victory!

Umm, not sure what you mean? Sure, our province is in a mess and the US promised something it cannot deliver but as far as I'm aware, 1244 is still valid (Ron can confirm).

You really should respect your home country instead of spitting on it every day. You'll get a dry throat eventually and that will delay your lessons learning Bože Pravde.

Try to be a little nicer and we can all start working towards building a better and more prosperous province. That would be far more constructive don't you think?

(Kosova-USA, 1 October 2009 11:51)

Not sure what crack you are smoking KOSOVA but NATO was duped by smoke and mirrors to attack Serbia so in the real light NATO just wanted a base to thumb there nose at Russia now NATO needs Russia to counter Iran. NATO allowed Russia to spank Georgia when those dummies used the excuse to run out of Iraq to fight for there homes but got crushed anyway. If you notice NATO is slowly leaving Kosovo and it will be a EU mission. As you can see EU rules are not in line with norm of Kosova. I see how much everyone hates rules but rules you will have. NATO cuts a deal with Serbia just say you will talk about Kosovo and we will fast track serbia into the EU and NATO. Now when Mr sejdiu who has to sneak into the UN building because they are not a member gets tossed under the bus by Albania because that sect of albanians do not like Kosovo albanians anyway. As the past has shown once Kosovo Albanians have used you up they turn on you IE Carla Del Ponte. have a good one.

"No invitation to join NATO"

Talking about having no shame: USA, Iran, NATO, China...and god knows who is Serbia chasing.

NATO doesn't invitee you, you must apply, complete conditions and then convince the 27 nations that you are OK. Serbia was told that EU and NATO go hand in hand, keep aligning with China and Iran and you will never get in EU.

P.S. No territorial issues or kiss NAT and EU goodbye

Aleks

Why would Serbia want to join an organization that has no credibility and may well cease to exist in the next few years?

Obama needs to save money and he's still subsidizing the Europeans.

The new (not yet) German FM wants US nukes out of Germany, Hatoyama in Japan want an 'equal' partnership etc.

Not to mention NATO SG Fogh Rasmussen in the US begging Obama and others to shut up about the europeans not pulling their weight in Afghanistan (they provide 40% of the troops) and calling for "a new strategic vision".

It would be incredibly dumb for Serbia to join an organization that still doesn't know what it is for, is full of internecine feuding and sniping, and is held hostage to domestic political demagoguery.

NATO is the past. Leave it there.

This Sutanovac makes me ill. He is NATO's man on the inside, and would love to enslave Serbia to join this criminal organization that committed numerous war crimes against the Serbian nation (the evidence is absolutely overwhelming), spread anti-Serb lies and propoganda, tried to steal 15% of Serbian territory from her, poisoned Serbian soil with depleted uranium, and continues to try to ruin our relationship with our true ally and protector, Russia.
There is no place in Serbia for foreign minions like Sutanovac. He should be tried for treason.

I have said this before, NATO is as good as the Warsaw Pact, great on paper but very weak in reality. The Russians are working on a new pact, one which they will control, perhaps the US will join.

Serbia should never join the liars of NATO. They illegally bombed you and their only worry will be that they will have less control over you in the future. Don't forget that only yesterday Georgia was blamed for starting a war with Russia over S Ossetia- Georgia desparately tried to join NATO- a plan no doubt to draw the West into a war with Russia. Do you really want to join an organisation so deluded, inept, corrupt and lacking vision that it may have attacked Russia on behalf of a madman in Georgia? I still recall our Minister (the boy) Milliband and David Cameron falling over themselves to support the moron in charge of Georgia. Russia has told the truth all along NATO and many EU ministers lied. It won't be long however before the EU and NATO are history.

Šutanovac really needs to go. He is a disgrace to Serbia and is creating further division. We have no option but to remain militarily neutral. Any steps to move closer to NATO will only strengthen those strongly opposed to it and further destabilise Serbia. We need policies that keep us united, neutral and independent as we are stuck between the East and West. This can be used to our advantage if we play our cards right.

HATO at least has some decency not to humiliate Serbs even more by asking us to join after their crimes and breach of international law back in 1999. However, they will be asked to join eventually. If that happens I hope we will educate our next generation what exactley HATO stands for and make them realize that joining that alliance of hypocrites is nothing for us. Let America/UK fight their own wars.

Kosovo-USA, good for Albania and Croatia that they can now march their troops right into Afghanistan and be used as cannon fodder.

Serbia already took on NATO (at our weakest) and guess what, their leaders ended up signing UNSCR 1244, securing Serbia's integrity! Go figure!

Now since they couldn't take Kosovo militarily they are trying to snatch it through an illegal UDI, but even that failed.

Now if I were NATO's leaders, I would be embarrassed that its sophisticated airforce and navy were used by a bunch of ethnic Albanian criminals and terrorists to bomb their own people, fellow citizens and country. There's no pride in that.

“Serbia will be an island in NATO soon, because all the surrounding countries will be in NATO or have NATO forces on their territory. What kind of relations should we have with traditionally friendly countries like Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain, from whom we are expecting and have strong support?” the minister wondered.'

To my friend Ataman,
If you get to go to Village Italia during ceremonies when change of command ocurres or national day, you will enjoy fruta demare .There is planty to go aroun and i just love sea food and Italian wine.
(Kosova-USA, 1 October 2009 15:00)

Thanks - I wonder, anyone just can drop in? Sea food is fine, but wine is reserved for passengers, not the driver. Otherwise don't think KPS/MUP will be happy.

By the way, Kosova did not join NATO, but rather NATO joined Kosova.
(Kosova-USA, 1 October 2009 11:51)

Technically, Sweden is not part of NATO - but they, too "joined". At least they as KFOR are all over Gracanica. BTW: if your invitation to Villa Italia is firm, next time I am going to "abuse" it ;-)

I don't understand him at all. Why he did not mention its immediate neighbor Croatia, which is a full fledge NATO member as well as Albania which borders with Kosova but not to far away from Serbia.
By the way, Kosova did not join NATO, but rather NATO joined Kosova.
(Kosova-USA, 1 October 2009 11:51)

1244 secured Serbia's integrity!!!!
Just look around you and tell me what you see.

"Serbia was told that EU and NATO go hand in hand."
arta

"NATO has insisted that it cannot leave Serbia outside the military bloc, saying that the country is a very important, if not the most important country in the region".
