For you Mr "Ambassador", it happened last Saturday... two people died in a shooting in a Paris suburd..
Part of that suburd is controlled by gangs and drug traffickers, am shocked that this can happen is beautiful Paris...

Unfortunately these things happen even in the best of societies and although it should not be condoned or tolerated it does happen.

However, I think that the French seem to have a short memory particularly when they bombed the Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand several years ago and they were not too horrified of the deaths they caused. Or for that matter about 2 years ago when a Paris policeman shot a youth and caused riots, or the unbelievable discrimination if your are of North African origin and looking for a job in France.

Mr French ambassador don’t be too overawed, your country has a lot more hidden skeletons. Go about you business quietly and don’t look too horrified.

It is a very unfortunate situation that Serbia currently faces. After many years of political and economic sanctions, which do nothing but disenfranchise the population, Serbia, and many other sanctioned nations, has found itself in a situation, one which has further been exastrabated but the sheer magnitude and breath of the global economic crisis, where Serbia has started to have resemblance to post Great-Stock-Market-Crash Germany. Serbia's internal outlook is, and has been, rather bleak and tentative at best. These circumstances are very good conditions for cultivating racially or ethnically based rhetoric. These very same conditions, and outcomes have been creeping into the western 'civilized' nations as well, with far right parties getting longer and longer podium time and attention. The rise in facism is often times proportional to the difficulties faced within the society in question. In no way or form should I or anyone else condone such behaviours, yet by Serbia's inability to rectify the situation the state has turned worse off over time. It is Serbia's role to take on the role of ridding their nation of these undesired facists, however, as earlier mentioned, it has been, and will continue to be a matter of extreme challange to this current and most likely other near future adminstrations. The nation has spent too long in isolation, the people have become cornered, and single sparks that lash out are genuinly met with the optimism of something new; for in the case of the Serbian population, something new can only be something better.
The environment in Serbia, is the ideal breeding ground for this sort of activity and this is what we have.
The solution to such a problem generally can come of two ways; the first being the recently prefered western 'civilized' approach of further sanctioning, and further impoverishment of the citizens, a direction where the constant twang of 'last straws' is heard, a place where nobody within and external to Serbia wants. The other option is to offer genuine support of the society, an olive branch that will help haul a few more people out of their mire with each extention of assitance, until which point the conditions are no longer favorable for such facist grass roots movements.
These difficult times have found much termoil due to ethnic tensions within the great western nations, yet due to these nations' state of wealth, many times such notions are dulled because of the inherit wealth of the nation and it's individuals. Of course there are countless cases in the great western nations where recent racisms have taken place.
One would certainly not suggest that America is an anti-Jewish nation while it is home to many individuals that plan and execute evil against Jewish citizens, directly or indirectly (as in cases of synagouge vandals). One should not judge Serbia as a nation, as a collection of its weakest individuals, lest one judge every other nation with the same magnifying glass.
If any historical and current lesson can be, and quite likely won't be, learned it's that bullying nations and people into submission may get you a dog that will bow down to you, but it will also get you a dog that will bite you hand off the first chance it can.

John Brighton's comment:
While everyone is talking about the dangers of extremist elements, the comment seems to relate the attack to the Kosovo problem. What did the victim have to do with Kosovo? Is the comment inferring that if the extremists have their way everything will be fine?!

Just last year there was a wholesale beatings, arsons and murders in Paris subburbs, and this man is "shocked" over this incident in Serbia.
Wow ! what is the World to say about cancelling of gay parade in Belgrade? Shame on us, we could have used army tanks vith live ammo,to make it happen, right ,your excellency? Time to send this man back to Sarkozy and Kouchner.

Violence of this sort will only increase if it is not dealth with severely.

One prime example is Melbourne. We have had so many Indian students get bashed that it has become a major concern of Indian government. We had a Canadian man die as a result of being bashed, a Chinese man also died as a result of trying to get away from thugs only to run onto the steet and be killed by a car. Bashings are a daily occurence in Melbourne and the only reason this is going on and getting worse is because our law is so weak. The person who chased the Chinese man onto the road to get killed only got 400 community work.
We've had a Chinese surgeon killed and another Indian doctor severely bashed.

Almost daily we hear of these sorts of attacks in Melbourne. Situation here is much worse than in Belgrade so if Belgrade doesn't want to become another Melbourne then they must act now.

Paul

Why is he shocked? Because he expects better conduct from Serbs? Or because he is completely ignoring the unrepentent thug cult in Croatia? Considering the way Serbia is being slapped around by Europe, the public deserves an explanation.

I never was agressed in Serbia (maybe because of romanian number plates or who knows). But i have seen those nazis in Novi Sad and in Belgrade. And the number is increasing. You soon could have a real problem with them.

how quickly the french ambassador either forgot or chooses to ignore the violence and outright rebellion which engulfed France just a few years back.

Every country has it's internal challenges when it comes to extremism, obviously...and even the US has it's extemists. So ease up Monsieur Ambassador, as many are also shocked with your Napoleonic President's policies as well.

Agree with you, having being also travelling Serbia inside out I never had any single problem and can only praised the kindness and the hospilaty of the people, can't say the same for some surrounding countries which I also visited.
It is appealing that the lesson comes from the french ambassador, it looks like this guy have never been in "les banlieux" in Paris and never took the sub after 9 pm...
This being said, I disrespect any kind of violence and wish that these guys end up for long in jail!

I have to agree with John Brighton. I was an Irish guy living in Belgrade 1998/99 and I was met with only good manners and kindness.
It's a pity about these recent events, but I still fell safer in Belgrade that any other country in the world

It looks like he is going to die and I guess this will mean life in prison for at least one person involved in the attack.

No one sane would disagree that violent hooligans ought to be caught and severely punished, but this sort of preaching is unconvincing coming from the ambassador of a country whose cities were aflame for literally weeks on end last year.

“Such events, especially the lynching of Brice Taton, cast a shadow on Serbia’s image in the world,” Terral said.

Ambassador that is exactly what you, the US and others are trying to do, becasue you lost Kosovo.

I'm a brit living in Belgrade since the Bombing and i have never been disrespected by any Serb. In fact one taxi driver asked me why my country was bombing. I said what goes around comes back around, they bombed the wrong side and will have to deall with the consequences later.

Ah the French, their wonderful CRS who battle french youths regularly in the suburbs. Can this minister say 'Clichy-sous-Bois'.

Not that anyone is shocked by the violence in France at all as it happens quite regularly. I suppose the ambassador has to justify his salary somehow...

bganon

But this is what happens when you sit on your hands and do nothing.

Clearly in recent years one can see a pattern of violence increasing whether on protests or in the demands of extremist groups.

And clearly we can see a pattern of the state doing nothing - which encourages hooligans into thinking what they are doing is normal behaviour and will not be seriously punished.

Its important not to overreact but its absolutely vital to send a clear message that hatred and violence is not normal and will not be tolerated.

Once upon a time the state used to beat its citizens too readily. Today it is certain citizens that think they can get away with anything.

Oh please. I hate this self-righteous western ambasador.

Given the huge rise in right wing (fascist in some cases) violence/"incidents" across many EU states and in his countries case violence against immigrants and far-left violence.

One can only imagine how these people would react if a Serbian official was too mention this inconvenient fact about EU states.

Yes, this current violence going on in Belgrade is despicable. Whether it's all orchestrated, or just random hooliganism, it must be dealt with swiftly and effectively. Personally, I could care about what the EU thinks of Serbia, I don't think much of them, or your own country Mr. Ambassador, but I do not like anyone, or group, bringing down the image of Belgrade for fellow Serbs. Arrest these thugs, and if someone is behind them, arrest those criminals too, and impose harsh penalties.
