lazar,
point take.
yet they didn't... who is to blame? milosevic of course. just because they chose to abstain, then they've also forfited their voices in the political forum. each person's voice can be heard at the ballot boxs, and no where else are you guarenteed...
so milosivic is to blame obviously...

bobbie, if the albanians participated in the democratic process they could have removed milosevic and his party from power in the early 1990s.

I miss the days when Milošević ran the SPS, a nationalist party which cared about social justice.

Now they have sold their soul to the same people who succeeded in destroying a strong, independent, and socialist Serbia and they will pay a price. What a shame.

RIP Sloba

I agree with the expert quoted in the article: the lynch on patriotic groups is short-term, a show for the EU & I've been saying it all along, just consider the recent survey that showed only the DS passing the 5% threshold out of leftwing parties, the other are all nationalist: SRS, SNS & DSS, which puts the gay parade & the attacks on westerners in perspective. The EU isn't the only alternative for Serbia anymore, there's BRIC & Serbs are waking up.

Milosevic ran the economy under sanctions better than these "reformers" have done.

He didn't do sell-out privatizations which closed out businesses.
There was also less unemployment during Milosevic's reign.
Utilities were so cheap under Milosevic that "they were practically free" some have said.

It is not strictly true to say that President Milosevic lost the election. President Milosevic certainly lost the first round of voting, but it was not clear that Vojislav Kostunica had won the 50% of the vote he needed for an outright victory. The precise voting figures were in dispute.

But in the end it didn’t matter how many votes Kostunica really got, the Americans and their Otpor agents in Serbia “claimed” victory, stormed Parliament and burned the ballot papers so that no recount could take place. People may remember images of black smoke coming from the windows of the Parliament building – that was caused by the “Democrats” burning ballot papers.

If there was a second round of voting with President Milosevic against Vojislav Kostunica, it is by no means certain that Kostunica would have won.

This article has it all wrong. Milosevic did not lose the election. Kostunica won 48 er so percent in the first round. DOS did not acknowledge these results of the first round, and didn't want to go to the second round. Therefore it is not Milosevic not accepting results, it is DOS and Kostunica not accepting them. To make things worse, Kostunica and co had their own "quasi results" in which they proudly ignored Serb votes from Kosovo.

Not saying who I support, these are the facts. The democratic process has been violated as there was no second round.
