I think what everyone is missing here is no one considers what will happen when the houses are rebuilt... I agree that in principal everyone should be able to rebuild and live where they want to. The reality is that EULEX can protect Albanian construction workers, but what happens after they leave and a family moves in? Will we have 24-7 protection for them for eternity?

Just the same, if a Serb family wants to return to somewhere near Decani, they have the right, but should police or the army have to protect them for eternity? It is simply impractical.

Coming from the US, there are places I cannot live because of my ethnicity... Southeast Los Angeles, parts of NYC, Miami, etc etc. If it is like this in the US, why should it be any different in Kosovo? I hate it for people that cannot rebuild where they want to, but logic and common sense should prevail. The rebuilding of houses in the center of Brdjani is a pure political move, and I doubt any rational Albanian wants to move in there.

By the way, there are hundreds of acres of unused land that is more toward the Albanian side in Suvi Do - so it is clearly not about finding a place to live.

Art, I really do not know. But probably not many, considering that Serbia has not had authority on its own province as stipulated by UN resolution 1244. The ones who bombed out kosovo's infrastructure and made it a hellhole have invested a lot in rebuilding houses and such infrastructure. However, things are very uncertain down there. It's not known how many people there are. Albanian Kosovo institutions say 2.2 million, the CIA factbook says 1.7, some go as low as 1.2... it is very unknown how many people there were in the province before and after the bombing. One thing is certain, that the serbian population has been decreasing since the 1960s. Once 25%, in 1961, we are now about 5 to 6%. It has been a cultural genocide under albanian expansion, in times of peace and in times of war.

Lazar, how many Albanian homes has the Serbian government rebuilt?
(Art, 3 September 2009 21:06)

Why do you want Serbia to build you anything? You want to be separate so don't even ask.

I think you took enough from Serbia already.

Have they finished building and repairing Serbian homes and property in kosovo?
(Ramiz, 3 September 2009 16:00)

Have they what? the Snake rebuilding homes for Serbs and Roma. My God.

Look! there's a flying pig.

Well, if not in all of Kosovo, then how at least are those 5 houses in Brdjani coming along? The previous clashes there ended with the Serbs receiving approval to build 5 houses there (on land bought by Serbia from its former Albanian owners, as I remember), with no need for any permit for them to start ground-clearing work. When the excitement ended, Albanians were rebuilding their houses and Serbs were preparing to start work on theirs, once contractors had been hired.

Every Kosova's resident of Serbian or Albanian ethnicity should be free to build/rebuild whenever and wherever they want providing they have got planning permission like in every democratic country.
I found it stupid to insist on any mutual agreement. Kosova institutions will provide any required protection if needed.

Ramiz, their goal is not to rebuild serb places. The goals have always been to push the serbs out and expand their own kin, the albanians. That's why we are against this, they should be allowed to rebuild their stuff if we can not rebuild ours. We had an agreement that if we can't rebuild ours they can't rebuild theirs. Double standards yet again.

I hope all houses of all people will be restored.

But even more important: international law must be respected. That means: no mutual agreed deal means no independence!

It is time Albanians accept that!
