Tensions high in Brđani again

A group of Albanians, accompanied by EULEX police, entered the suburb of Brđani in northern Kosovska Mitrovica this morning to resume work on their homes.

I completely understand position of Kosovo Serbs. Albanian houses are going to be rebuilt but not Serbian. Where's the justice there! At the same time Albanians in southern part of the city do everything not to allowed Serbs not even to come to visit their property let alone to get it back.

People, regadless of their ethnicity (!) have a right to rebuild their homes. yes, there are many albanians who have homes in N mitrovica, and wish to live there again, and they have every right. we met one last year working in a hotel in S mitrovica -- but there are 100's, perhaps thousands.

this split as it stands now is totally artificial, a kind of aparteid, ala RS. any normal police or normal intl force MUST enforce the law, and will.

the only valid issue is that serbs (and anyone else), if they CHOOSE, have the right to return to their homes anywhere in kosovo/a. of course if they have allegedly committed war crimes they might then, and should, face adjudication. ALL criminals must face adjudication, no exceptions, no excuses.

ethnic apartheid is no longer acceptable, thank you very much, in a civilized world. if you need it, colonize another planet. preferably far, far away.

hmmm... I don't understanding something... So big EULEX police presence when Albanians need to rebuild homes without aggrement with local authorities... So - where were NATO or western police when Albanians burned serbian houses in Svinjare in South Mitrovica?? Their base stand only 100-200 meter from village. And what they doing when Albanian mob destroyed serbian houses?? NOTHING. Oh... Sorry - they was doing something - they "evacuate" Serbs from the village (read: "they support for ethic cleansing in Svinjare").

Someone here is scared to death from rebuilding.
The bottom line for everyone living in Kosova, you can build and rebuild wherever you like providing your respect the rule of law guaranteed by Kosova's Constitution.

But Kosovo is a Serbian province. So when Albanians will accept the law of the Republic of Serbia?

No double standards please!

Amer,

Suvi Do is mostly Albanian and has been so for some time. Brdjani is mostly Serbian, and has been for a long time - but with a significant amount of Albanian homes mixed in. I would say it was more similar to today's mixed area of Little Bosnia. The area in question right now is actually a connecting piece of land between Suvi Do and Brdjani, and this area was Albanian prior to the war. I think the issue that has erupted is that Albanians want to return to where they were, including homes in the actual village of Brdjani, but the Serbian population does not want them back because Serbs have not been returned to South Mitrovica at all - as in zero returnees.

I am just answering your question about the area as best I can having worked there - I am not trying to interject politics into this. Maybe someone else can answer this question better than I...

'Ineed this is classic occupation and a clear provocation by uck - it's a another form of ethnic cleansing. They just have to infiltrate last remnants of Serb pockets, and build houses exaclty there?'

Maybe someone with local knowledge can comment on this: from what I've seen in a couple of articles in other papers, this has always been an Albanian neighborhood, and people are returning to properties that have in some cases been in their families for 200 years. The only Serb properties (land, not houses) were purchased after the war by the Serbian government from Albanians.

Any citizens of Mitrovica out there?

Seems like Ratko does not know the difference between UNMIK and UCK....and he did not bother to read the article in its entirety either.

I would really like to see if EULEX can get back property of Serbs from south Kosovska Mitrovica like they do for Albanians in the north part of the city.

One Serb representative from Brđani, Nebojša Minić, said that the presence of such a large number of police officers was “classic occupation“

Occupation: the act of occupying.

I'm not really understanding the link here with the police.

To the Greek, during the past couple of years we have seen which country in Balkans is most violent. During less than two years several bombs have exlpoded in Athens, warlike uprisings all over Greece last year.
