Only around 20% of Scots want independence and even less Scots want independence since the economic crisis.
(Ian, UK, 21 August 2009 10:41)"

then why is the UK government so dead set against a Scottish referendum on independence that the SNP planned for 2010?

Independence will give the 5 million Scots control over their North Sea oil which they will no longer need to share with over 50 million English. You do your arithmetic and see the implications.

Britain's right to her permanent seat on the UNSC will likely also be questioned should Scotland and Wales secede.

I agree Ian. But let's be honest, this wasn't a British decision. The UK government were delighted to leave this to the Scots in the face of US pressure.

Your right, it wasn't a British decision it was a Scottish decision. Scotland has it's own legal system, Scots would be complaining if Westminster had intervened. I'm glad to see Edinburgh make the right decision despite heavy pressure from Washington.

It is great to see Edinburgh standing up to the relentless US pressure and acting according to its own mind, in contrast to those eager grovellers in London.

The Scots are definitely ready for independence from the UK now!

Difficult decision but certainly the best considering the health status of this person!
Glad that the Scots stand the pressure from "we know all best, made in USA"

My very far ancestors would be proud :)

Ian, not only is he not a threat to security, but it's highly unlikely he did it. Have a look at the extensive investigations that Private Eye did on this case. The number one suspect is the Syrian secret service, but at the time it was undiplomatic to say so. Al-Megrahi is most probably a patsy.

In Britain, one of the reasons we put people in prison is to detain those who pose a threat to society. Abdul Baset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi is no longer a danger to society. No one is going to benefit from him being in prison. It is just going to Scottish payer more money to keep him in prison and to pay for his well being. I couldn't care less what Clinton has to say, this isn't her country. Just let him go home to die. We should be proud of Scottish humanity.

RIP to everyone who died in the Lockerbie Bombing!
