I was at the concert. Bono said nothing against Serbs nor did I see any of the posters that alledgedly were unwelcoming to Serbs. On the contrary, when an announcer welcomed people from the various parts of Bosnia, the crowd positively cheered when Banja Luka (the capital of the Republika Srpska in Bosnia) was mentioned. In addition, the crowd cheered again when young Serbs in attendance (who were seated together in a cordoned off part of the stadium) decided to rush over to join the rest of the crowd. That night was an extraordinary time of healing for Bosnia - all were welcome. I felt honoured to have been there...

"Just to remind you all of one reason why Bono might have been deemed worthy of a Bosnian passport issued by the Bosnian Federation is the fact that on posters around Sarajevo before the U2 concert in the mid-1990s, was written "no dogs, no Serbs". Shortly afterwards he received his reward from Alia Izetbegovic.

Of course he was in good company, another recipient was the US's ex-ally Osama Bin Laden.

As an Irishwoman I feel his Irish passport should be withdrawn. Perhaps the UN could issue him a global passport!

Is this fact or myth? I find this difficult to believe.

If true then I am disgusted.

Terry,

I liked his music very much however as to his personality he is really rather a superficial "Dutch" for me than a bred and born irishman with big heart. The fact that he wes a great friend of Tom Lantos is also very disappointing.Anyway if you happen to be in Falls Road area forward my greetings to my friends in Celtic bar.The one next to Jimmy Johnstone mural.

my beloved Sarajevo (...snip...) slandered by our charming nationalist posters.

Your post is #8.
Please find which post of #1...#7 did slander Sarajevo.
The one who did, should be hanged, drawn and quartered.

The most radical one is about Izetbegovic political ideas. However, nothing about Sarajevo. BTW: I hope you would not equal Izetbegovic to Sarajevo - that's a slander for Sarajevo.

Thanks for the info Jason. i'll get shot for this but I think it may have been just that...an urban myth that grew arms and legs. Unless anyone else knows better?

If you'd get off your high horse you'd realise most people in Ireland and the UK think he isn't right in the head - doesn't mean they weren't a good band. I'm going to see them tomorrow night for about the 20th time.

Pure nostalgia takes me there - I was at tiffany's in the early 80's in Glasgow with an audience of under 500.

So you can go on about your beloved Bono but he's always been full of rubbish - ask Adam or Larry :) An great entertainer nonetheless.

Also, do you want to buy a signed programme from the Barrowlands in 1984? You seem like the kind of mug that would pay thousands for it.

Terry, Belfast,Ireland

He is as popular in Ireland as a blast of rectal gas in an astronaut suit. Incidentally, his "band" recently moved their base to Amsterdam to avail of the tax-breaks, seems they just can't make enough money. He made millions out of castigating Serbians, so he deserves the worst of scorn, loser.

What a surprise (not) that Bono and my beloved Sarajevo were both slandered by our charming nationalist posters.

Bono is what he is, with all of the treasures and contradictions of such well-meaning superstars. the best of their music does rock, of course! and is quite exquisite if a bit booming.

but the connection U2 made with the besieged sarajevans was a very powerful and poignant one; both their concert (that was electronically connected in the midst of the war), and their song Miss Sarajevo, that includes pavaroti's short operatic interlude. in fact i was just reminiscing about "Miss Sarajevo" with an opera singer who I met on my way to the SF airport...

also there are numerous stories of young people, during the midst of that hell (92-95) hunkering down to tunes of U2 to block out the din of the "grenaden" as they called it, whenever the power would hold up.

it is bad enough that we (sarajevo) had to endure all of that hell, but to read such comments here are just so contemptuous.

I often here about his comments in the "famous" concert and my Serb friends tell me that they were deeply offended. However, when I asked no one could remember what it was that was said. So, what was it he said?

In any event he is a total fruitcake
(Irnbru, 17 August 2009 17:51)

This is all I could come up with, so it may be an urban legend...

"Bono Vox / U2: rumor says that during or after Sarajevo concert he stated that he will never play in Serbia, as a sort of punishment for starting the war. This statement is nowhere to be found on the net. On the recent gig in Zagreb, however, he said “For all the visitors from out of town – we are going to be back next summer maybe in your town.” Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean Belgrade, but one can always hope."

what's this "honorary passport" for? Is it something you give and revoke as you please? C'mon guys just don't be silly , if you have already given it that's it.

It's a pity that Bono isn't being stripped of his Irish passport as well.
With reference to what he said about Serbs in Sarajevo during U2's 'famous' concert there some years ago; his courting of bellicose corrupt regimes, particularly in Washington and London; the transferral of 'U2 Ltd.' from Ireland to the Netherlands to avoid paying Irish taxes; - I really don't regard him as an Irishman at all.

So what happened?

Have Bono discovered the truth about this sharia western protectorate or has he read Izetbegovic muslim declaration and got cold feet?

Guess we never know...

The tosser hasn't realized anything, he's still an arrogant, ignorant egotist who thinks his popularity means he has something intelligent to say and he will continue to cloud issues and damage causes by making illinformed statements on topics he less than half understands. His singing style is getting pretty boring after 20 odd years too. Adam Clayton continues to rock tho!

Just to remind you all of one reason why Bono might have been deemed worthy of a Bosnian passport issued by the Bosnian Federation is the fact that on posters around Sarajevo before the U2 concert in the mid-1990s, was written "no dogs, no Serbs".
