If Serbia want to join the European Union, they Serbians will have to accept the 'rules of membership'. One of the rules is that there is equality and no dicrimination against anyone, and that includes, amongst other minority groups, gay men and women. If a relatively small group of gay men and women cannot march down a couple of streets once a year in a "demostration" calling for equality, then there is something radically wrong. It is even worse if such Gay Prides are faced with intimidation and violence from so-called 'nationalist' groups egged-on by religious leaders.

All power to Queria and other LGBT groups for standing their ground and trying to organise a Gay Pride next month. I will do what I can to be in Belgrade that weekend to support them.

At the end of the day, we should respect differing views and live together peacefully.

Protection of the gay and lesbian rights must be fully and clearly supported by the Government and the media as one of the milestones of the modern and tolerant societies.

I did have followed coverage of this issue in media and the comments of numbers from the contributors on the few forums and as per leading argument "against" the gay and lesbian manifestation I could read objection that people should not be "parading" their sexual orientation publically(even being mention like semi-official stance of the Belgrade Major).
Though I do not agree fully with this point, if it is genuine,I can understand it partially.

It is an obvious fact that some societies in Europe are more conservative then others in that sense. As well it is clear that equality of gay and lesbian community in Serbia is still not achieved.
In order to knock out the "valuable" argument of the opposition of this manifestation maybe the Organizers should change the name of this happening to be "Gay and Lesbian Day or Demonstration".
I do not think that Serbian society of today is still ready for the gay and lesbian parades in the style of Amsterdam, Berlin or Zürich this days.
Also being living in Amsterdam for quite a bit of time I can assure you that if the Amsterdam's Gay and Lesbian Parade would move just 30-40km from Amsterdam and in some of the more conservative communities in The Netherlands, participants of Parade would receive a number of nasty remarks too.

As per that unfortunate fact of the human nature I do rather believe in the "step by step" approach and policies: starting with annual gay and lesbian demonstrations which will in some day in the future produce the right situation for the real Gay and Lesbian parade which will be participated and enjoyed by heterosexual community too.
