They're not for sale; 24hrs within this wry British report, Croatian officials denied this; google for more. Typical Brit attitude in writing this article, where they like to demean everyone for one reason or another, with a special disdain for anyone in eastern Europe, and extra points for the Balkans. "Hard-Up Croatia?" Me thinks there's an abundance of stuff that's off the rails in British society and their economy - perhaps they should do an assessment of their own ship-shapedness before demeaning smaller cultures cultures.

szemi,

Thank you for your proposal. I appreciated your sense of humor.
Actually my wife is the true real estate expert with a very successful carrier in that field.
I agree with you the price will be under 2 billions. Several partners with "deep pocket" will be needed for the organizer of the deal...unless as Lenard suggested Bill Gates is the buyer.

The Balkans are really a strange place, 18 years ago people were dieing for a couple of square metres of land, now entire islands are for sale. Money buys what blood could not

Logic,

If those two guys have so much selfrespect and dignity why don't they show a good example by giving back (Koenigsberg/"Kaliningrad") to Germany, Karelia to Finland, Kuryl Islands to Japan just to mention some of them ???

The 2.5 billion price is just an asking price.Given current economic crises and the fact that Croatia badly needs money I can very easily imagine that final price will be well under 2Bl.The place is in an ideal position and can be reached by airplane from Russia,Middle -East and whole Europe within 3 hours. The climet is ideal all year and during the non bathing period a lot of activities can be persued as well. The ideal would be if a consortium managed by Joe would buy the place.Joe is a good person for such position
since he has experience in real estate business high society friends and is a trusted person in his community which is indicated by the fact the he was trusted to represent the new york area hungarians. This way a one week live B92 forum could be organized every year. Some water and jet skiing during the day combined with safari visit .And sparking unsensored political debates in the evening. In such event I could bring some Öttputtonyós aszú,while posters from Balkans some ingridients and their cooking knowlage.

While ago it was declared worldwide that Croatian Islands were the most beatiuful on the planet. Based on what the world media said about these islands trust me they'll sell fast. About the price hmmmm can't say anything for now but most importantly is what kind of agreement that would be. Most likely some Arabian or American billionaire will buy em. Too bad I haven't got that amount of money:(

I would make a offer but they would laugh at me. I guess I will take a ferry ride over its cheaper. Before the new owner puts up a sign private property no trespassing. Maybe Disney Land can bye it with the theme pirates of Balkan Caribbean. It would help tourism to Croatia.

PUTIN and MEDVEDEV possible buyers?
Poor assumptions. Too much integrity, too much of self respect, too much dignity in these two guys to even think of acquiring stolen property. Brioni WAS stolen from Italy.

aRTA,

I fully agree with your assesment. Most likely it would be a 99 year old lease.
Yes the price is much too high. And it is not for hotel chains. 3-4 years ago Russians oligarchs - whose main problem seemed to be how to spend there "hard-earned" money - would have been interested. Some Arab bilionaires could afford it but they are very business savvy. They would quickly figure out that in other investments the same money would bring more profit.
Possible potential buyers could be Putin & Medvedev for Russia to use it as a PR conference center.

A "sale" might be what is known as a 99 year old lease. Either way 2.5 Billion EUR is ridiculous, only a few billionaires might afford them and I doubt they want to put so much money there. Hotel chains aren't dumb enough to spend that much either.

Pros: they have infrastructure, close to the shore, in Europe
Cons: Toooooo expensive, weather not tropical.

szemi,

It is an interesting news indeed. I am familiar with Brioni Islands, read about them even in Tito's time in National Geographic. Nice place but for 2.5 billions?
The Croatians seem to be good businessmen. They still can lower the price.
In the mid-nineties I visited Mali Losin (probably mispelled), small very nice island not very far. I liked it very much. As for the prices? Already sky-high especially if they noticed that the potential buyer is a foreigner.

szemi,

The Croatians should also demand outright payment in currencies like the Euro or Swiss franc -- no dubious mortgages, especially those denominated in a currency that is printing more and more notes by the day because they can't service their debts anymore.

Or barter these islands for REAL assets like oil, gas or gold that can be stored to benefit Croatia's homes and industries.

And for heavens sakes stay clear of payments via credit cards and financial instruments from you know where which will eventually only turn toxic later.

szemi

Joe I hope you have read it .Seems to be a good investment.
As to cockatoos they mime their their owner very well .Koki may retell some of comrade Tito's great speeches.
