Gold for Cavic

pre 11 godina

It's about time enough prssure was put on FINA and the IOC to rectify this blatantly incorrect decision that has robbed an athlete of a potentially career-altering gold while giving one to Phelps for coming second in the race.

On top of this Omega's admission, I'm wondering when Phelps' finish, with respect to rule SW 8.4, will be discussed. It's obvious on Sports Illustrated photo finish, that Phelps activated the touch pad with his right hand only and not with both his hands, as is required by rule SW 8.4. By finishing with one hand, instead of two, a swimmer can get couple of hundredths, since one arm is longer than two arms for more than 5cm. 50.58 is the time of touch pad activation by his right hand only. Left one is couple of hundredths behind. Most probably, in his desperation to win 7th gold, Phelps instinctively extended his right arm to reach the wall sooner.

"...Has this been reported anywhere else?
(Lazar, 7 August 2009 18:31)..."

Answer: Hardly anywhere that I know. I have checked a bit on Dutch, German, Austrian and Swiss pages and not a single word.

You can find few videos on YouTube with the name "Omega admits Cavic won...". That would be the most I found. The short interview is by Cristophe Berthaud, General Manager of Omega. After short introduction he says only relevant sentence: "Cavic touched the pad BEFORE Phelps...". Then he continues that it is not only needed to touch it, but to hit it hard enough to react?
I find it as a joke? Guess before the race all the swimmers should receive single Instruction Manual: How to use the touch pad?
So the "thing" works perfect if second swimmer arrives 2-3 seconds after the winner (please allow me to banalise), but if we have a tight race, and when it is relevant and crucial that touch pad works properly, then it fails? Bizarre !

Just as one commentator added in another discussion: You jump in the pool, you swim and you touch the finish line-touch pad first. That's called victory.

Unfortunately not in our Cava case?

Omega wanted phelps to win NOT because he was an American, but because that final medal was going to bring a bunch of attention to him and he IS sponsored by omega and that means they would get the benefits. The admission now has more to do with the fact that phelps has not turned out to be as big a start as everyone thought.

It was an international conspiracy. It was actually discussed behind closed doors at the UNSC months before the Olympics "how to deprive Serbia of their glory"

'Has this been reported anywhere else?

Yes - http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/olympics_blog/2009/08/phelps-clad-in-glory-but-his-sport-wears-emperors-new-clothes.html

This was widely discussed at the time of the race in the U.S. - Cavic was gliding, Phelps was pushing and moved the contact to activate the timer more quickly. This might have been a matter of luck - Phelps' goggles had leaked and he was swimming blind and perhaps didn't see the wall in time to avoid charging into it.

That moves Serbia from the 62nd position to the 44th in the medals table http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/GL/95A/GL0000000.shtml

Quite respectable but we should do better next time.

This isn't because Phelps is American and Cavic is a Serb. It's more monetary.

Phelps set a bunch of records won a bunch of gold and this was the only one in his way from breaking Mark SPitz record from the 70s.

Omega agreed to let Phelps win because they are one of his sponsors and with all the hype of him winning it would be a good investment for them if he won.

FINA, the international body for swimming, is the one that's likely doing this because Cavic is first.

First thing they should do is annul the results. By the same logic they Ben Johnson should be returned hsi medal for the 100m sprint in Seoul since he like Phelps won it by fraudulent means.

Ratko

pre 14 godina

What kind of a stupid explanation is this? The explanation should be, "you know we just had to make Phelps the winner even though he lost because he is american." What a disgrace! But it's OK we knew who the real winner was in the first place!

Dragan

This is a scandal! They knew this a year ago and only now are coming out with this statement?
Cavic needs to be sent the gold medal which he rightfully deserves, with an official apology from Omega. We knew this all along, but it is now official.
Congrats Cavo, you have been vindicated!!

Just as British BBC sport reporter have said upon the end of that race:

"Has Phelps really won or we want him to win?"

Everybody relevant to decide the race, Omega and FINA, knew that at the time, but decided to steal the race for Phelps.

NOW, we want back the gold medal to the real winner MILORAD CAVIC!

Milan

At least the majority of the world finally knows they have not been and are not dillusional. In this case Michael Phleps can keep his gold medal, but the OIC should give Milorad Čavić a gold medal too. But of course this will not happen, because Phelps is American and Čavić is Serb.

szemi

Well guys only the physically and mentaly blind did not see this.
The moral of the story is that the truth comes out in the end.
One day maybe even Ruder Finn will admit its "mistake".
