It was not a matter of "race" (if there is such a thing), or any other supposedly immutable characteristic, but a conscious religious/cultural and political choice on Emir/Nemanja's part.
(Jovan R., 2 August 2009 14:50)

Emir simply went back to what his ancestors were, (Serbs)before they were converted to Islam.

If he found that his ancestors were Croatian he would've had himself christened as a Catholic and declared he was Croatian. Either way he has a race just like all the Bosnian Muslims do but choose not to acknowledge it.

Not so long ago, Muslims of Bosnia could not say they were anything else but either Croat of Serb Muslims. Bosniaks have become only a recent invention.

The process described by Roger7 is exactly how Nemanja Kusturica (formerly famous as Emir Kusturica) became a Serb. He chose to be baptised as a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church and declared himself to be a Serb.

Jovan R.,

Muslim is not a nationality.

A person becomes a Muslim not by race, nationality or culture.

When you profess a belief in Islam, you are a Muslim.

It is incorrect to say that Muslim is a nationality.

Why must you ask? What anyone chooses to call his or her ethnic identity is an entirely personal matter.

It's not for anyone else to say whether someone should say he or she is a Muslim by nationality, or a Bosniak, or a Goran, or a Torbeš, or a Turk... or a Roma, Egyptian or Aškali... or a Serb or a Montenegrin. It's an entirely personal choice -- there are no DNA tests to distinguish one from the other.
