"No matter how many troop surges NATO carries out it won't be enough to overcome the fanatical tribes of Taliban."

Call the resistance what you like or belive anything media tells you about them, but they are fully entitled to defend their own country. UN clearly says so.

This speech was written for Scheffer by the Military Industrial Complex. They need war and NATO expansion to keep their profits up and their shareholders happy. They are the only ones who win, nobody else. Money that could be spent on schools, hospitals, finding cures for diseases...instead is spent on weapons by this organization of war mongers. It's a sad state of affairs and people need to wake up.

NATO's mission in Afghanistan is only 'essential' in that it needs conflict to justify it's own existence - much like the 'timely case' of Kosovo when participating nations were questioning the relevance of this 'defensive' organisation.

Otherwise would be subject to the 'creeping death' of budget cuts.

What a world.

Last speech of one second class politician, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer !

In the year 2002 he was dropped of being the party leader from CDA-Christian Democratic Appeal because of his incompetence to be a Party and Opposition Leader in the Dutch Parliament and he was changed by present Dutch Prime Minister, Balkenende.

Though his "incompetence" and obeyance was exactly what Bush needed as a main characteristics for the new and next Secretary General of Nato at that time. So upon first diplomatic visit of obeyable Dutch team, Balkenende-Hoop Scheffer, he was offered a position like Nato Boss as a present for Dutch immediate, full and unconditional support for the USA and in the War with Iraq . TV footage of that meeting, with Bushes team at the morning breakfast in the White House, went around the World. Think that CIA have done a perfect job in analysing their “conformist characters” and Bushes team treated them as a dumm kids. It was truly “painful and pathetic” to follow that news and footage on the TV.

Well now comes Rasmussen, intellectually more capable but still from very much USA satellite and obayable country, to redefine “non-excisable” Nato role in the modern World.

Of course apart of fulfilling the main and sole purpose namely of being the main consumer and client for American weapon industry of death.

It's sad to see the level of illusion exhibited by NATO leaders.

What exactly are NATO troop in Afganistan for? Not to catch bin laden or to fight terrorism.Thats baloney.Bin laden is the forgotten villain in the Western press.

The real reason behind NATOs war in Afganistan is exactly the same as it was in the Balkans. That is to secure the energy routes from the oil rich Asian states.

All empires in the past did exactly the same thing. That is sending soldiers to die for commercial interests and to enrich the big multinationals.

As far as Afganistan is concerned NATO has no real strategy as haw to deal with the Taliban and no xit clause either.Sadly there will be more human lives lost and more $billions of taxpayers monies spent and like the Vietnam war it will end in defeat or a political
solution. No matter how many troop surges NATO carries out it won't be enough to overcome the fanatical tribes of Taliban.

'De Hoop Scheffer calls NATO a timeless alliance, but one that must adapt.'

- adapt. OK, whatever that means.
But it must also do the following:
- repent; for all the grief and hardship it inflicted upon the Serbian people.
- make amends; to Serbia for past NATO atrocities committed in Serb regions.
- name and shame; all those western politicians who connived with NATO and terrorists in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo i Metohija.
-stop; portraying itself as some kind of New World Forum to replace the United Nations.
-cease; acting the bully in Eastern Europe and leading countries in the region to falsely believe that if they are not in NATO, they are missing out on something great.
NATO - the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. For example, what on Earth has Georgia got to do with the North Atlantic?
My country, Ireland, is an island in the North Atlantic and it is NOT a member of NATO.

Sorry, but NATO and the US have done more harm to world peace than good for a while now. The fight against terrorism has helped spread it rather than contain it. They empowered Osama Bin Laden and supported him for a very long time.

When Serbia was fighting terrorism in Kosovo, the KLA, Al-Qaeda and NATO were all on the same side with Al-Qaeda also being active in BiH. Now the West has made a real mess of things. I wonder who will be next to bite? Hashim Thaci?
