The MiG 29, as every Russian/Soviet items, are not made to work for a long operational time. At the moment there should be only a pair of one-seater MiG 29 and one two-seater in condition of being used, mainly for training and air show, in the Serbian Army inventory (and, please, forget the very old MiG 21). Maybe for the Serbian government it is the case of giving up with the air defence duty and of charging someone else of executing the service. Slovenia and the Baltic countries have appointed foreign air forces (Italy is in charge of defending Slovenian air space and various NATO members are patrolling the Baltic skies).

MikeC,
hey buddy, Austria-Hungary was more powerful than Serbia and guess who came out as a winner? Germany destroyed our air force in days, and guess who came out as a winner? So do not be fooled about the superiority of the air force!!!

kalifornia, what dicency or hate? just want to show concern about a fellow pilot.

Does Serbia need an airforce? After all the Balkan wars I think it's not likely for any new war(s) any time soon. At least not one where warplanes are needed. We didn't stand a chance against NATOs air superiority so what's the use of having an airforces when we get our butts kicked by overweight american pilots. Put the money where it's needed more, nuclear weapons.

If you think Serbian's are treated unfairly and portrayed in a bad light now, just wait till you try to start a neuclear weapons program...

Why does nothing i post go through?? Do i have to be a paid employee of the Serbian govt like other posters on here to allow my stuff to go through?!?!

My condolences to the families.

I think Serbia needs to probably part with these old Migs and start saving up for modern fighter aircraft that will be light on maintenance and overhaul costs, something like the Grippen or Eurofighter, maybe Rafale.

Seems like a perfectly sensible thing to do when the opposition has total air-superiority. Of course without NATO to hide behind, even MIG-21's would've been enough to deal with the KLA.

And combat aircraft crash in all countries - Australia & the US included. FA-18 went down in San Diego not so long ago. Australia lost one a few years back. Nature of the beast.

Interesting fact.

MiG-29 successfully delayed the over-expensive "Eurojäger" project in West Germany. At the time the West Germans begun their own design, no one expected the re-unification happen so quickly. The East German air force was one of the largest operators of MiG-29 fighters. West Germany inherited all of them and I am not aware, a single was lost ever. They were very satisfied for many years.

That means, in period between 1990-2010 Germans had more resources and better technical background than Serbs.

It wasn't the same case earlier. With Lockheed F-104 Germans lost over 100 pilots during peace time - it had a very high accident rate.

Otherwise I happen to be born in Zhukivsiy - a former "forbidden" city because of TSAGI. MiG-29 was designed there and we did see many interesting prototypes in the skies.

I heard about max. two accidents during the afterwar years and as we know, testing new aircraft is not the safest profession.

Despite the magic place I spent well over decade I really hate flying, I am not an expert and NEVER WANT TO BECOME.

Hence:

@Joe and Alban: there is not much wisdom you can say about this tragic event. At least admit - like I did - the only hornet ("lódarázs", "шершень") all of us have enough expertise is the one with yellow-black stripes. Besides "fanboying" we can't add anything to "MiG-abc versus F-xzy" debate. I can say precisely, the professionals who are involved on all sides have a lot of respect to each other but laugh at "fanboying" people like us can do.

What are you living in a Yugoslavia's time? Serbia cant afford to maintain them let alone increase flight hours. What do you mean they'll come in handy? All MiGs that were send in the air during the NATO war were taken down by F-16s. Those who are left were in hiding, do some google search, it sure does wonders.

My condolences to their family.

" The Yugoslav air force bought 14 of these MiG 29s and two MIG 29UB jets from the Soviet Union in 1987."

Not a political statement but all Balkan countries have to ground these old planes unless they can afford to maintain and upgrade them. Too many unnecessary deaths are happening

Drink, for God's sake, two soldiers were killed. Have you any decency? The hate some people bring to this site is disgusting. There was nothing bad said about Albanians, so if you can't show sorrow after a tragedy, don't say anything, please.

Its sad that he as a pilot was there to serve for peace, while others call for war.

Thats what happens when you reduce flight ours and maintenance. Hopefully that will change because those Mig´s & Oreos will come handy pretty soon...
