'what now? withdrawing? you want a medal? no. yanks should be made to stay and rebuild everything they've destroyed. what miserable disgrace this is.'

We're leaving because the Iraqis want us to leave: they want their country back. Especially their elected leader wants this - he's a politician and wants to be able to claim he ended the occupation before the next election. Just hope that their forces are up to taking over.

You couldn't be more right and the answer is very simple, NO, NEVER, the question is now when the partition. As you truly pointed out the North is already defacto running is own business and will sooner or later break away. Moreover there are more than 20 millions Kurds that are still looking for a country... maybe they should hire the medal collector Atisari, he will certainly find some land to strip!

Iraq's future is in the hands of its own people, and Iraq's leaders must now make some hard choices necessary to resolve key political questions, to advance opportunity and to provide security for their towns and their cities," Obama added.

The handing back of Iraqi sovereignty is more symbolic than real.US will never completely withdraw from Iraq
and the establishment of permanent bases to accommodate up to 50000 troops is proof of that.

Americans will also act as advisors to Iraqi military and will have a defining role
in Iaqi ministries responsible for reconstruction.

However, the withdrawal of the bulk of the US military forces could spark the process of power strugle amongst the Iraqi elites and various ethnic groups resulting in civil war.

The dispute between Arabs and Kurds over the city of Kirkuk is already heating up with violence and bomb attacks on a daily basis. It is also worth noting that the Kurdish administration has been awarding oil exploration licences without the approval of the central goverment.

I do not share Obama's optimism on the future of Iraq. The six year war has created a bitter animosity betwwen the waring factions and there will be old scores to settle in its aftermath.

In simple language i doubt if the Shias,Sunni and Kurds could live together ever again.
