If you live in Serbia than you have other facts around you and really I have better things to do than supply fact to people that see them but dont want to see them.

(Olf, 23 June 2009 09:40)

Oh I want to see them, believe me! You must get them right from the source! Olf, you remind me of Will Farrell as George Bush. Do you get your facts from a pop-up book or something? I suggest maybe taking a look at a title called the Kosovo Dossier, published in London by the Lord Byron Foundation? And BTW I live in Canada.

not all Hungarians are going to travel to Hungary, you know that. Theory of 5% might not be 100% acurate, feel free to add 2-3%, but not more than that.

Rebel I don't believe 100% of Albanians abhor Serbia. I think the large majority live in fear of the thugs that are running their rackets in Pristina. Just remember- in Serbia you had the opportunity for progress and law and order. In the future Kosovo you will just have banditry and foreign troops on your soil. Don't think it will improve- it will be the black hole of Europe. Is this the future you want?

I have travelled from London to Belgrade by JAT four times recently and know that it's not just the richer Serbs who travel. But will they be able to travel without visas to the UK which is not on the Schengen list? I hope so, as it has cost a lot of money to bring my Serbian friends to England, but I fear not.
(Christine W, 22 June 2009 20:18)

Christine,

Many on these flights are in UK only for transit - they are going to/from USA and Canada and the proportion between "Yugoslavs" and "Gastarbajteri" (American/Canadian residents) is ca. 50-50.

Amazingly, it is much easier to get American or Canadian visa than Dutch. With the r/t prices of flight from/to the WestCoast (SF, LA) being in $1000 range and the prices to Western part of Europe being not proportionally cheaper than the distance is shorter - no wonder, there is significant traffic.

When K-Albs are out of Europe like Serbia was for 20 years, then I'll worry. Until very recently one Serb&Mont. citizen could travel without visa to these countires and that number was not that significant nor it changed their lifes. Being able to travel without visa it does not imply only ticket expenses but expenses of stay in that place, which more than 90% of ordinary Serbian citizena cannot afford. 1) There is significant number of Vojvodina Hungarians, clearly over 5%.
2) There are no Hungarians, Romanians or Slovaks left in Vojvodina - and barely anyone in Serbia (5%) wants to travel to Hungary or Romania.

I have no idea where some poster here thinks that only 5% of Serbs will benefit from Vis-free travel. There are more than 5% traveling now, with Visas. Maybe the comments was just intended to be negative and spiteful? In any case, liberalizing travel for Serbs will be a major physical and psychological benefit. They will feel at last that they are totally moving away from the destructive policies of the Milosevic era, and the implications they brought. As for the K_Albanians, granting them Serbian passports should be strongly regulated, since they would be representing the Serbian nation when they travel.

Kosovar in England

pre 14 godina

The majority of the commentators here are citizens of western countries one way or the other How they have managed to gain their citizenship only God and the devil knows, therefore of course they do not need Serbian or for that matter other countries biometric passports, but what about those people in the Western Balkans? Reflect just for a second!, They have reached their 40-ties without being able to ever travel outside of their countries of origin, be it Serbia, Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro.

As regards Kosovars, it is the Kosovo GOVERNMENT - PRESIDENCY and PARLIAMENT who are wholly RESPONSIBLE and guilty of this mess. They all hold Diplomatic Passports anyway so why bother. They knew that one of the principal conditions for visa liberalisation was the production of Biometric Passports - what they did instead? – they produced some ‘PASSBOOKS’ Unmik-likes for the same price. So when it comes to the problems such as these they cannot be blamed of not having done the job of recognition, instead using the argument of biometric passports.

I'm all for Visa free travel and this is a positive development. It's also good to hear our politicians include all of Serbia's citizens, especially ethnic Albanians from our Southern province of Kosovo. We are all Serbian citizens after all so that's the way it should be!

I know there are some Kosovo Albanians who are blinded by their "Albanianism". They come here daily with negative comments and spread hatred. They promote the destruction of their home nation and find it difficult to live with their fellow citizens but I would like to say they are really a small extremist minority.

In this respect, Serbia joining the white Shengen nations is a major development that will be welcomed by 100%, not 5%, of Serbs.

Serbai will NEVER get the visa deal if they issue passports to K-Albs: one is political (Kosova is independent for 22/27 EU nations) and one is that Kosova is not ready when it comes to security, emigration and other reforms.

The overwhelming majority of peaceful Southerners remain quiet because they know what tends to happen if they speak up. Don't lose hope my friends, you'll soon enjoy the benefits of Visa free travel also!

Kosovars do not want your passports.

Your Government said that only 1.000 have applied for the new passports, despite the fact that visa liberalization is expected.

This is 0,05% of Kosovars.

Logically Serbia will issue passports to all of its citizens... All 900 000 of them.. Im sure the Politicians in Pristhina are sweating on this one.. they will be the only ones left by the time the passports are issued..

Look forward to the threats from the Albanian camp regarding the termination of Macedonia etc etc etc..

Duh, it's designed to never get one. They need documents that no one has and Jeremic was told not to speak. If I were a betting man, I would suggest Jeremic stop saying these things or Serbia will not get them in 2010. It's not a done deal as you know.

If Albanians get Serbian passports, what does that mean? They had Serbian documents for 96 years...and we know how loyal we were.

We'll take our Albanianism any day. Someone named Zoran here praised Mladic last week.

It does not matter how many Hungarians are in Vojvodina, what I am talking aboout is the entire percentage of Serbian population that would benefit from visa free regime.
Man, nothing works in Serbia, go and see Leskovac valley, it looks really very very sad. Talk to people in Leskovac valley about visa free regime and thay'll ask you does that mean jobs=money. If you tell them that visa free is nothing but spending money for fun they'll tell you where to go.

pre 14 godina

Visas are a form of sanctions that have a severe psychological effect against the population of a targetted nation. Even if some Serbian citizens will be unable to travel (frequently) they will now have the CHOICE to travel at short notice and without any hassles. In this respect, Serbia joining the white Shengen nations is a major development that will be welcomed by 100%, not 5%, of Serbs.

The Swiss

pre 14 godina

So much noice for nothing. Visa liberation is going to work only for wealthy ones, 5% of Serbs.
(Olf, 22 June 2009 10:18)

approx 280 thds are living in Switzerland only and God knows how many in Europe. Just take one visit per year of their relatives and "your" 5% that you keep on stating is already a funny number, unless you are God and really knows by heart how many are travelling, or maybe you are part of this 5%....
Futhermore I also guess that a lot of relatively cheap bus tickets fairs are available allowing more people to travel. (maybe Atama can help on this :)

In other words before stating day after day that the Shenghen story is useless for Serbian, either come up with real facts or at least try to add value to the debate!

(Olf, 22 June 2009 12:25)

thanks for the article but my Serbian isn't that good....

As to their politicians, well politicians are all over the world the same, simply liars, just see

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/jun/21/iraq-inquiry-tony-blair-bush

The same applies to our Swiss politicians too...

I do not care about politics, but of course have to deal with it because at the end it affects my daily life.

I'll be happy if more Serbian would be able to travel to Switzerland because our experience has been always positive with them. The same applies for the K-Albanians that came to Switzerland during the late eighties, nice hard working people, but I can't say the same for unfortunately most of the so called refugees that came during the nineties and have been trouble makers since then including twds their own peacefull fellow citizens!!

The last 8 years under the bloody leadership of both Bush and Blair the world has being going crazy and today we pay a heavy price for this and these people alike should be tried, they simply can't be above the law!
Cheers

Yeah, the other day we hear from Albanian camp that the entire Vojvodina is Hungarian which is clearly more than 5% - and don't they want to visit Hungary?

Now face two statements.

1) There is significant number of Vojvodina Hungarians, clearly over 5%.
2) There are no Hungarians, Romanians or Slovaks left in Vojvodina - and barely anyone in Serbia (5%) wants to travel to Hungary or Romania.

Please tell us, which one is true because you guys can't have the cake and eat it, too.

Here I am not discussing Bulgarian and Greek vacation being less expensive than in Croatia or Montenegro.

serbian diaspora is huge and just counting their relatives in serbia will affect far more than 5% of serbian citizens in a positive way if visas are abolished. and then there is the psychological effect of simply beinf able to travel without visas. you feel equal with others.

Don't think it will improve- it will be the black hole of Europe. Is this the future you want?

I have no idea where some poster here thinks that only 5% of Serbs will benefit from Vis-free travel. There are more than 5% traveling now, with Visas. Maybe the comments was just intended to be negative and spiteful? In any case, liberalizing travel for Serbs will be a major physical and psychological benefit. They will feel at last that they are totally moving away from the destructive policies of the Milosevic era, and the implications they brought. As for the K_Albanians, granting them Serbian passports should be strongly regulated, since they would be representing the Serbian nation when they travel.
