Ataman,

For the same reasons I would love to see Greenland as the 51st state. Too bad that an occasion was missed in the sixties. I used to fly over Greenland many times by taking Newark-Copenhagen-Viena. I liked to fly with SAS but they became expensive (now I fly with Air Austria). Once the weather was perfect over Greenland - a lot of sunshine - and the captain made us attentive to the beautiful montainous, icey scenery bellow.

"from the transport point of view and mostly my own selfish reasons I would really welcome them to be the 51st State. To bad, they did not became in 60-s.

Yes, incorporate Greenland into US so that you exploit them and their mineral riches to help bail out your trillion dollar debt. Selfish indeed -- I agree with you for once.

If I were a Greenlander, I would rather keep all the mineral wealth for myself and my small population. Greenland would would then become among the richest people per capita. So thanks but no thanks!

Denmark's transport policy is not very good - the flights are prohibitively expensive and the sea transport is even worse.

"So if there was ethnic Europeans living in Greenland it would give the Danes the right to rule over them? I don't think it really matters which continent they come from.

Also if Greenland does become independent, Denmark can keep military bases there, just like the UK has done eg in Cyprus.
(Ian, UK, 21 June 2009 16:24)"

I was referring to the Yankees' military bases, not Denmark. Why would Copenhagen wante expensive military bases anyway? In any case, the Danes can keep their presence there only if the Inuits agree. Otherwise it will be an illegal occupation. And I am not so sure the Inuits would agree with open arms to that idea after independence.

"All Greenland has to is when they want independence and they will grated it on the spot. Few people in denmark wants to prevent from gaining independence. right now is the problem that they are 55,000 people living along many 1000's rocky coastline, who at the moment only have their fisheries and not much else, so they depend on Denmark on aeras like healthcare and education, they simple lack the number of skilled people needed to run a fully indepented state.

Of course Denmark would lose over 90% of her land territory, and all the oil and mineral wealth that lies beneath Greenland and her territorial seas. And it is not as if Denmark itself is mineral rich -- far from it.

"(0)What's this
50K people can't make a state: think about the army, people o work, rule etc etc. Maybe they should be like Puerto Rico is with USA, a state but not really.

Maybe Denmark should sell it to USA for $1 Trillion this time :-) (US offered $100 Million in the 60's) and let them become a US state--if everyone agrees of course.

They can also be 99% Independent but within Denmark, as Denmark isn't really oppressing or trying to do anything bad. Congrats to Denamark for the very progressive policy.
(Alban, 22 June 2009 00:59)"

Alban,

So 50K people not a state make? Then Nauru (10K people) and San Marino (30K people) should not be states right? And yet Pristina gleefully if not desperately welcomed their "recognition" not too long ago!

The Inuits are not even ethnic Europeans and therefore should not be under the Danes.

I wonder what Copenhagen will do if the Greenlanders declare a UDI. Not so easy when it involves your own territory, is it?

Don't expect the US to support Greenland's independence however in view of their military bases there.
