Comment 3: ""Many of us are still highly unimpressed that Greece was allowed into the EU. Rather than develop, it's actually gone backwards since gaining membership.

Well sorry to disappoint you but the actual reason immigrants have flooded Greece is the high salaries, income and quality of life it offers them - not the EU membership of course.

Even now - under global economic crisis - Greece has a similar GDP with Spain and Italy, and certainly much higher than any country of ex-Eastern Europe.

So, next time you try to spread propaganda for impression purposes, just know that people in here are well informed and they don't "swallow" everything they read so easily.

Why is someone posting under my name? Get a life. I am pro-Greek, and their membership in the EU is well deserved. They are certainly more developed than many of the Eastern European countries that the EU, with America's urging, horseshoed quickly into it's fold. Anything to disadvantage the Russians.

Many of us are still highly unimpressed that Greece was allowed into the EU. Rather than develop, it's actually gone backwards since gaining membership.

The news is about illegal immigrants landing into Greece and not about Greek membership of the EU.

Greece applied for EU membership more than thirty years ago when the club had only eleven members and noone
objiected to its application.

We still have the highest standards of living in the balkans and Greece provides jobs and incomes to thousands of immigrants.

I cannot see the point of your posting.

lesvos??

b92, it is lesbos, and the people of that place are called lesbians in english :)

It is Lesvos and not Lesbos.
There is isn't letter with the B soundin Greek alphabet.

There needs to be an EU wider effort and tell people in developing countries that they are not wanted in EU.

The EU should also use its soft power to punish countries like Turkey that promote and facilitate human trafficking. It is a common secret the Turkish army and security services make vast amounts of money by helping human traffickers abandon thousands of impoverished immigrants to either inhabited or unihabited Greek islands.Turkey also refuses to implement bilateral agreements signed with Greece with regard to repatriation of immigrants that entered Greece from its soil.

Recent European elections have shown anti-immigrant rhetoric was popular with minority parties. If the present immigration policies continue-combined with the recession-it will help to strenghthen the extreme rightwing parties and their policies towards immigrants.
