bganon. Kostunica was never really pro-Russian, his explicity pro-Russian stance is a development of the last two years. I don't think he would have intervened at the time.

But with regards to Lenards comments. Your claim is absolutely absurd. Under Putin the average Russian earns 650% more then he did when Putin came in. SO much for your claims of theft -- the only theft was of the ill-gotten gains of the likes like Khudorovsky, Berezovsky and so on.

Yaroslav I don't think that is the only reason. Surely you don't believe that the Serbian and Russian financial sectors are not connected?

Clearly there are Serbian and Russian interests in Moscow Banka opening up. And it seems beyond reason that succesive Kostunica governments would not allow Russian banks to be present on the Serbian market - regardless of the fact that G17 was running things in the banking sector. If Kostunica wanted it, he would have pushed it through. The only conclusion is that the Russians were more interested in other markets, until now.

Perhaps you remember that Agrobanka was to be sold to Russians, but the Russian buyer pulled out of the deal.

What you say about Jelasic being an appointee of G17 is true of course, but its also true that he could be sacked by the present government. It is also true that I used the term 'DS' because Raso did, as I know he is obsessed with that party, even if his point was actually meaning to blame SPS during sanctions (and the current government, aka dumbed down by some as the 'yellows'). As G17 is still part of the government its a moot point.

Sure the oligarch's with Putin's KJB friends can transfer easyr the money they stoled from the Russian citizens to Serbia. Then launder it transfer it back to Russia and then on to Cyprus. Then they will say their investments in Serbia sure hit the unbelievable jack pot just like that over night. Keep your eyes on the money and which of the Serbian politicians become unexplained millionaires overnight to turn away their eyes from shady deals. Then Serbia's finance minister can say how much supposed investment money rolled in with nothing to show for it in Serbia.

Oh poor Luigi,

What are you rambling about. At no point was a percentage of control ever discussed here. Of the 800 or so banks in Italy the numbers I stated above are foreign banks. Prior to 1991 I believe the government resisted investment from foreign banks but under pressure from the EU they had to change the laws.

As for the dealers of government debt, please see the following paragraph taken from a repected investment website......

Many foreign banks operate in the wholesale, investment-bank or securities markets. The list of foreign financial institutions that are recognised by the Italian Treasury to act as primary dealers for government debt provide a clear picture of this. Twenty of the 22 specialists nominated by the Italian Treasury as of 1 April 2008 were foreign.

Luigi, I would say from your comments on this subject that you have a fundamental lack of knowledge of the international financing system and as such I would sugest you steer clear of the subject.

bganon. The onyl reason this was approved is because none of the failed western banks will invest in Serbia and the government needs propaganda to say "Investments are still coming."

The simple fact is this bank and other Russian banks [including Gazprombank, Sberbank, Alfa-bank (different from the Greek Alpha present in Serbia)] have been prevented from investing in Serbia.

This is when Jelasic [who isn't a DS appointee, his appointment came in 2004 when Kostunica didn't rule with DS but with G-17+ and Draskovic's SPO, with the non-official support of SPS and sometimes DSS] and his predeccessor Mladjan Dinkic. Given that DSS was never a strong party on pushing it's economic agenda he is probably more of a G-17+ nominee then anything else.

Luzhkov is the guy who can give Serbia not only financial and economic aid but a strong moral support as well. He has always stood firm for supporting our allies abroad. Thus he has already built a lot of schools , hospitals , flats , plants and roads in the Russian regions of the Ukraine and most of the Central Asia. So now it's Serbia turn. Congratulations !

why ist this "paper" censoring facts?

austrian banks did deal with gold and jewelery from killed serbs in croatia from 41-45 and from 91 to this day?

where´s your problem with that!?

'after destruction of serbian banks without reason and for austrian banks by DS and other self-declared economic heros...'

...The DS government with their appointed NBS decided to grant Moscow Banka a license. Hmmm...

On a more serious note while competition is welcome in this sector there are too many banks in Serbia. I expect in the next couple of years for the number to drop due to mergers (some state sponsored) and the odd closure.

35th foreign bank!!!!!
you have already sold Serbia !!
and you speak about Kosova !!!
try to be serious....
(Luigi, 3 June 2009 10:30)

Luigi,

I may be presumptuous but from your name I would say that you are based in Italy..If not I apologise.

For your information 35 foreign banks in a medium sized country is quite conservative. Take Italy which has in excess of 100 foreign banks of which 20 of them act as primary dealers for government debt out of a total of 22. So only 2 domestic banks are included. Who's sold out now?
