Honestly though, Jeremic has to go. He's too young and does have the international connections a season politician has. Surely there must be someone more qualified that a 20-something year old to run the FOREIGN MINISTRY!?!?!

freethinker I speak as a voter, the 85% or so of the country that did not vote for DSS.

I've had enough of the constant shifting of DSS to the right. I've had enough of the fact that DSS takes money from Miskovic, Lazarevic, Hamovic etc.
Enough of the single issue party policy.

I don't know where to begin perhaps you better tell me why Kostunica is so wonderful and then I can disabuse you of that illusion.

Kostunica did not leave DS after DS formed this government with SPS. DSS led government has already been supported by SPS from the backbenches. Further its known to everybody who follows Serbian politics that DSS has for years been trying to poach SPS voters and succeeded in doing that post 2000.

In case you forgotten it Kostunica also used to be a supporter of European integration. Woe is me!

Yes SRS are the unreasonable side of Serbian politics. And yes Kostunica wanted a DSS / SRS government, well said my freethinking friend. How do you justify that?

And the other extreme side of Serbia is in fact LDP, DS is actually a moderate party on all the main issues. It would be recognised as such in any country.

Kostunica too honest for the job! Do you run his fan club or something?

We've had enough? Who exactly do you speak for bganon and what have you had enough of? What are these mistakes you speak of? Which party interests has he put before national interests? You want to discuss so lets discuss.

You are so critical of Kostunica, a man who is not even in power currently and yet their are criminals holding high positions in Serbia today as we speak and not a peep from you.

It should be pretty clear why Kostunica left the democratic party when you see what its become today. The first ever coalition to be in bed with Milosevic's offspring... risking the future of Serbia on a bunch of promises and gestures of "European support" blaaa don't make me gag.

What saddens me is the lack of balance in Serbian politics. We are always the extreme never the moderate. The SRS are no doubt the extreme unreasonable side of Serbia where as DS (and associates) are the extreme 'yes-sir anything you like' side of Serbia. In that chaos I only find Kostunica to be in the very center of moderation. He stands for reform of the country yet doing so under OUR own terms and upholding our identity. You can't ask for much more than that.

The only reason I can say why Kostuinca is not right for politics is he is too honest for the job.

Well freethinker you don't even want to think about the reasons why Kostunica refuses to create a strong centre right party with Nikolic?

We have seen Kostunica in action close up and we have had enough. I don't want to bother going into all the mistakes he's made for example by putting party interests ahead of national interests etc.

But as you point out Kostunica grew increasingly obsessed with one issue until he finally became a single issue party. The problem with that was that most voters that have kosovo roots voted for SRS instead.

How principled it is to put a part of Serbia (important though it is) ahead of every other policy is another question. It seems the majority in Serbia think the Kosovo issue very important but not the ONLY issue.

Kostunica just played the last election script 10 years too late.

marKo that is extremely soft on Kostunica. People do not dislike Kostunica because he's boring. They dislike him because of his past political decisions. People saw that nonsense in parliament and twigged that all this guff about how principled he is. In reality he will dump what we think he believes as a political price. That Speaker of parliament debacle was a ridiculous farse played out on our TV screens showed that to everybody.

As for him not straying from his origins are you sure about that? His origins are in the Democratic Party. Looks pretty much to me that he has joined the patriotic camp. Rememeber how Kostunica used to criticise SRS. See how these days he doesn't criticise them at all but only his former ideological 'friends'?

I do not see anybody giving a logical argument as to why a large centre right party should not be formed with Kostunica as a central figure? If he is so principled why is he obstructing this?

People don't like Kostunica because he is boring; boring to watch boring to listen to. Djindjic called him a drone and to many people he comes across as one.

I am a great supporter of his yet I too fall asleep listening to him almost as if his words, as topical and truthful as they may be, were made of pure tranquilizers.

What people don't realize is that allthough Kostunica is not sexy or exciting he is the most intellectual and capable person to lead Serbia out of this crisis.

Take away his professorship, call him a drone, call him an egotist for staying the course and continuing his longstanding politcal activsim. It does not matter he will continue to be on message. He will continue to have the best thought out approach and conclusions. he is not about to abandon Serbia's future or sovereignty.

By applying boring law and reason he faced the Titoslavists down and the Milosevics down and the Djindics down. He is the only politician left who never strayed or faltered from his origins. Not even Toma can say that.

Competence, reason and common sense may not look flashy but Serbia is in a crisis and the answer has to be found in Serbia

Because bganon they don't want to, get over it. DS and SNS ideologies don't fit their party policies and that's just fine. Your pointless witch hunt on Kostunica is truly unjustified. I don't understand what the man has done to truly give you such a bad impression. As far as I am concerned Kostunica is the only principled politician in Serbia. He deliberately places Kosovo as priority #1 because that's what it is. If we let Kosovo sit on the back burner then we will never get it back. The economy, education, judiciary etc all need reform too but in politics timing is everything, time for reclaiming Kosovo is vastly running out.

And how quick some Serbs are to forget. After all Nikolic was once the acting president of SRS, DS's most "despised" enemy and now he want's to spread flowers of love and joy left and right? Sorry but I don't buy it.

Don't worry about DSS, if the SPS can get back in government (and a high positions at that) after the crap they pulled 10 years ago then clearly in Serbian politics everything is possible...

I have to admit, I have a certain admiration for Toma, as he pretty much single-handedly transformed the SRS from a far-right wing party to a party of national populism. That he was going to butt heads with Seselj was inevitable, but his departure and formation of the SNS may very well relegate the SRS to the dustbin of history.

bganon, I could totally see a SNS-DSS coalition, but you may be on to something when you say Kostunica wouldn't want to play second fiddle to Toma. What I do see however is the greater likelihood Toma can have in forming coalitions now that he doesn't have the Seselj specter hanging over him. No one should be shocked if he ever comes to power, but that would probably mean Vucic gets some sweet government position, and that guy just doesn't sit well with me.

Nikolic should have left politics long ago.He said with his own mouth that if Kosova declares Indepndence he will quit and retire from politic.

bganon

Unlike the rest of the radicals Toma will be part of the government one day.
He is willing to step up and make decisions rather than whining on the sidelines which has become a national sport for DSS and SRS types - mainly because they are bereft of ideas of their own.

Of course cooperation between DSS and SRS should politically be more logical but Kostunica doesn't want to be number two to Nikolic. So probably that means that until Kostunica retires, it is extremely unlikely that DSS and SNS will cooperate.
If any DSS supporter disagrees with me I'd like to know why Kostunica won't ally with Nikolic.

Its a pity that Serbian politics is so full of egos...

BTW if SPS were thrown out of government they would automatically reanimate Milosevic and become more radical than the radicals. Apparantly that isn't what Tadic has in mind for this party. G17 on the other hand would not have anywhere to go...

Toma is the best friend of Russia in Serbia. I would say the best of the best ! It's a big pity that my country did not give him our open support during the Presidentials. In any case best if the government represents the whole of the people.
