Some satisfied, others irked by Biden visit

While the ruling coalition believes U.S. VP Joseph Biden's visit would open opportunities for improving relations with Washington, the opposition doesn't agree.

No Peggy, in now way I imply that all crimes were committed by Serbs, and I understand that some Albanians have done some bad and terrible things and I really hope justice will reach them sooner or latter.
What I in a way wanted to say in regards to your comment on Biden, is that he only made those statements after Serb regime was continuously committing those crimes. And now it is really irrelevant, to my understanding, for him to apologize for having said something that truly happened. Instead, it would have been much “healthier” for the whole region if those who truly committed crimes come out and publicly apologize, and in this case not to the world, but to the victims and their families.

I agree to some extant! In no regime the whole “race” (proper saying: nation) can be responsible for the regime’s deeds.

PZ, I meant race not nation because Serbs live outside Serbia as well. He smeared the whole race.

You talk of apologies to Albanians. What about apologies to the Serbs from Albanians? Are you implying that only Serbs committed crimes and only Serbs need to apologize to the world?

How about everyone apologize to everyone and we'll leave it at that. I agree, crimes were committed by the Serbs and those Serbs are now arrested and tried, but, crimes were also committed by the Albanians and those Albanians are rewarded with high positions in Pristina now.

Peter. Albania has a bright future and has a beautiful coast with a ritch land. It is sad that we are where we are but we are not as bad as you think or want to make it. It is a fact that Poland besides Romania and Bulgaria that just joined is the poorest country in European Union even after reciving a substantial amount of money from eu. Polaks are consider second class citizens in majority of European Union, likewise as Albanias. Dont preach to the priest please.

# 26: “Biden is so arrogant that he can make such derogatory statements about the whole race of people and without apologizing is still made welcome.”

I agree to some extant! In no regime the whole “race” (proper saying: nation) can be responsible for the regime’s deeds. But, in the case of Kosovo, the regime had overwhelming support of the people to crush, as the regime said, the Albanian irredentists, or the terrorists. Instead, this regime, (army, police units, paramilitary groups, etc) killed thousands civilians (babies, elderly, women), raped many young women, burned thousands households (including my house), etc etc.
Has anyone ever come out publicly and apologize for what has happened in Kosovo?? Committing crimes and never apologizing (now by the democratic government), in my opinion, means upholding to those policies exercised by the previous regime.
“Laying the blame for what occurred in Bosnia on the shoulders of one man, even a cynical opportunist like Milosevic, is patently absurd. By encouraging the arming of Bosnian Serb militants and providing them with logistical support he should certainly be brought to justice but other factors, including the inaction of Europe and an absurd UN arms embargo that only penalised the mostly Muslim government of the fledgling state, thus allowing the heavily armed Croats and Serbs to move ahead with their ethnic cleansing, were also factors. It should also be mentioned that both Milosevic and Tudjman seemed to have the enthusiastic support of most of their countrymen.
When faced with real opposition Milosevic has always folded, as he did in October of 2000 when he was finally driven from power after yet another poorly orchestrated electoral fraud. One of the most horrible things that Serbians faced in the wake of his retreat was how little he had been opposed in Serbia over the years.6 In 1996 large numbers of protesters took to the streets to protest an earlier foray into electoral fraud, this time in non-presidential elections, and he was forced into a compromise, turning over, among others, the position of Mayor of Belgrade to the Opposition. Many members of the “United Opposition” who turned against him after the country was bombed by Nato and economic sanctions left the country in a shambles, were some of his most important allies on the Right and their rhetoric was even more extreme than his own.7
The ineptness of Milosevic’s handling of the Kosovo situation in the late 1990’s showed that he was anything but the “mad genius” he was portrayed as in the West. It was in many ways the lack of will shown by Europe and the United States during the Bosnia crisis that allowed this man of rather average intelligence to manipulate the peace process. When faced with daily bombings and dwindling popularity over Kosovo, Milosevic once again tried to wrap himself in the role of peace-maker but this time not even the once credulous Clinton Administration was buying it.
The tragedies that followed in Milosevic’s wake are not his sole responsibility. The simple truth is that Slobodan Milosevic probably never committed a murder with his own hands: there were plenty of people around who were willing to do his killing for him. Let’s hope that his successors honor all the victims of his Presidency and not just those who share their national identity or there will be more Bosnias, more crises and more hatred in the very heart of Europe in the years to come.”

You better write this artical about your FM Jeremic, who is using taxpayers money in Serbia. Traveling to countries which there is no success at all. I thought all politicians practiced some sort of diplomacy until I read what Biden said about Serbs.

He should not be welcomed in Serbia. Tadic should refuse to accept him. Anyone else but Biden or Clinton.

Biden is so arrogant that he can make such derogatory statements about the whole race of people and without apologizing is still made welcome.

I can only hope that enough Serbs go to the streets in protest of this man. Write his words on banners and display them so that he is confronted with what he said the whole time he is there. Tadic needs this also to be reminded of who he is welcoming.

BKK

Like many already stated, I too, do not agree with Biden's visit.
Serbs who disagree with him should stage a pieceful protest or a silent one - perhaps posters or something which would indicate that such man is not welcomed in Serbia.
He is a war mongorer, and a hate speaker, and should be treated as such.

When have we all stopped questioning Western morality?

This man leads an aggressive campaign to destroy other cultures in name of ''American way of life''.
His country seeks to destroy Eastern cultures, Chinese culture, Japanese culture, Middle Eastern culture, and overwhelmingly and most importantly European culture.
Begining from France and Germany (yes, Germany) all the way to Serbia and eastern.

I do not agree with this collective American culture - we all have wonderful long traditions and cultures that should be celebrated, not discarded because Americans believe it should.
Europe should exist as a collection of wonderful traditions and peoples, not some superficial 'one European' culture.

There is no such law that states that a country must be in NATO to join the EU. Also, Albania may be applying for candidate status, but that doesn't mean they will join before Serbia, because Albania was already a NATO candidate by 1999 (when Poland, Czech and Hungary joined), and it took them considerably long, so who says they will beat Serbia into the club? Also, the fact that there is growth in Albania only shows how behind and how much catching up Albania has with the rest of Europe.

That would be like me saying Serbia will veto Albania's EU ambitions when they join the EU (because they will join first, given how weak Albania's economy is)."

Petar,
first: serbia isn't going anywhere near NATO without recognizing Kosova. Border and territorial "problems" are a no-no. Secondly, ONLY Albania and Cyprus will have an economic growth this year. http://www.setimes.com/cocoon/setimes/xhtml/en_GB/features/setimes/roundup/2009/05/15/roundup-bs-03 Serbia is /was under bankruptcy threat and facing 5-10% decline. Albania's main problem is corruption and informal economy. If the trend continues, Serbia's 30% advantage in GDP /PPP will disappear very soon as more people register legally and pay taxes in Albania. Oh, and just last year Albania signed 3 Billion in energy investments from Italy alone. With NATO membership (done!) and property registration (almost done) more and more investments will flow, especially to the beautiful coast.

Without solving Kosova (until now recognized by 22/27 EU members) Serbia isn't going anywhere, regardless of the public statements. Then there is Vojvodina, Mladic, Croatian border delineation, coming to terms with the 1990's, etc. Albania has no such problems.

Poor Serbia, it has been a rogue state for so long that even a visit by a US V president is a major event. Don't get your hopes up though, you will get in EU if you do what US tells you (Kosova) and you are in no negotiating position.

Kosovo is in no position to dictate to anyone. You are a welfare territory and not in a position to say anything except "thank you" America for the food stamps.
Why don't you tell us to recognize Kosovo and stop resisting in Northern Kosovo if you are so mighty powerfull? Albanians are just frustrated that they live in a doomed territory without a future. The US has begun to realize what horrible mistake they have done. Besides, Serbia is the most powerful and most important country in Western balkans so naturally the Americans wan't good relations with the Serbs. The US has more to gain from Serbia than the Albanians.

Actually, Serbia has not stated that membership in NATO is a goal. Austria, Sweden, Finland and Ireland have also not, so why should Serbia? Also, what you are saying about Albania is nonsense (probably just a cheap provocation), because Albania has a) stated that it supports Serbia in Euro-Atlantic organizations b) no balls to offend other Western powers who would like to see Serbia integrate with the West. That would be like me saying Serbia will veto Albania's EU ambitions when they join the EU (because they will join first, given how weak Albania's economy is).

Petar,
first: serbia isn't going anywhere near NATO without recognizing Kosova.

Let’s hope that his successors honor all the victims of his Presidency and not just those who share their national identity or there will be more Bosnias, more crises and more hatred in the very heart of Europe in the years to come.”

it´s quite intersting, ...most of the writers here seem to believe that NATO will exist forever...

kids,... they merely survived the fall of the iron curtain by creating the legend of "ethnic cleansing" and "genocide" in southern Serbia, in order to show some muscle, and to present some more or less believable justification for their own existence.

let´s not be naive, NATO has no promising future. actually it´s a US-american foreign-policy-instrument, with virtually no legitimacy.

our dear albanian friends are over-emphasizing NATO´s importance for obvious reasons, that´s quite understandable, given that they have nothing else to cling to.

but, the emerging new powers of the future will teach them otherwise.

last but not least, it is called NORTH ATLANTIC treaty organisation...

what have they lost in SOUTH EASTERN europe, not to mention Afghanistan...???
