The president of Georgia's attack on Ossetia was as brutal and as calculated (and probably conceived in the west as were Tudjman's terror against Krajina. The difference was that Medvedev sprung to action while Milosevic hid in the tall grass.

That being said the recognition of Abkhasia should never have happened given the Abkhaz involvement in Beslan and other Chechen terrorist adventures.

"The White House said Biden welcomed the Tbilisi government's "measured" response to ongoing opposition protests, and stressed a need for both Georgia and Russia to exercise restraint and contribute to the stability of the separatist regions."

Let's see: Saakashvili, a pro-Washington potentate, attempts to clamp down on free media in Georgia, refuses to step down by popular demand, fabricates a story of Russian involvement in an attempted coup; and the United States calls his actions "measured".

Serbia, no lapdog of Washington, attempts to find a compromise solution to the deliberately-created impasse over Kosovo, repeatedly calls for new negotiations, and attempts to defend its territory in no less of a fashion than Georgia; and the United States repeatedly refers to these actions as "unhelpful", "provocative", and of course "nationalistic".

Proving once again that double standards in foreign diplomacy are indeed the name of the game of Realpolitik.

That's what happens when you hold military exercises in Georgia. I don't get what the US expected, they should know full well that PfP cannot be held in a country ruled by someone like that horrendous Saakashvili.
