“I am sad to be leaving Serbia, because they have showed me great respect and courtesy during my stay here,” Munter said.

Well, Mr Munter the Serbian people have shown you great respect and courtesy. But you and your country do not deserve such favourable treatment. Your country is responsible for what has transpired in Kosovo since 1999. Your country has destroyed Serbia. So good, riddance, I trust you will be treated the way you deserve by the Iraqis!

This is more than you have shown the Serbs.
I pity the Iraqis now.

Well, if you're the best candidate to be an advisor on such things, it explains alot why that US foreign policy (and implementation of said) has been so damn poor for the past couple of decades...

In order to improve the relation with US, Serbia must stop support for ultra nationalist in Srpska Republica and leave Bosnia alone to be normal country. In addition Serbia has to improve human rights in Sandžak and Presevo, also stop interfering in Kosovo affairs.

Does anyone know what he did to get fired? something must have happened for him not to have been permitted to finish his term and for him not to be handed another embassy; instead he was given a punishment posting.

Considering how popular service in Baghdad is and how hard it is to get people to serve there, this could be a good career move. The last time he volunteered for Iraq (according to his bio at the State Department site) he got an ambassadorship out of it, so maybe he can expect a Super Carrot in the near future.

In any case, it looks like the current administration intends to pay more attention to the Balkans than the Bush people did. If I were a Serb, I'm not sure how happy I'd be about that.

it will be interesting to get the full story on the reasons for his departure.

its also interesting that in some way he has been demoted, but that demotion sounds like he will be head of military attache.

And we all know who are those that usually get these posts...

In 70-s my dad was offered a position in Libya, he passed on it. The market value of an engineer salary was no more than $200 at that time in the Eastern Block.

Wise decision: remember the Bulgarian nurses in Libya.

Maybe with some luck and continued western backing an independent Kosovo will be the democratic success that Iraq and Afghanistan are thanks to the "patronage" of people like Mr. Munter and his friends at the pentagon and state department

good news!

he should have departed much earlier.

let´s see wether the US intend to really improve relations with Serbia.

of course, they will know what they have to do in order to become friends and partners.
