Serbian "no" to NATO exercises

Serbia has decided against taking part in NATO exercises in Georgia as Russia’s official position is that they pose a threat to its security, says Vuk Jeremić.

Peter Sudyka: "NATO should find a more neutral state to conduct its military exercises in."

What do you mean neutral? Do you recognize a special right of Russia over Georgia? Is that any different than tha special right the USSR thought it could exercise over Czechoslovakia only 20 twenty years ago? If Georgia wats to join NATO, shouldn't it be given the same chance as the countries like yours?
As for Abkzhazia and S. Osetia, I don't think the Georgians will ever recover them. It would be wiser if they start negotiating in order to get some compensations for the displayced persons from there.

I think that Serbia has shown good diplomacy here. NATO should find a more neutral state to conduct its military exercises in. I thought things would change with Obama, but he is evidently the same type.

Albania in 1993 was in a much worse mess than Kosovo now, but it did improve radically...and so will Kosovo in time.

Whatever one calls Iraq, Afghanistan was certainly not an imperialist adventure. Most western countries and others agree (including Iran that has a huge drug problem because of Afghanistan) but of course there will always be compulsive nay-sayers.

So far no Albanians have died in Iraq or Afghanistan. Some may die in future, but that's the price you pay if you choose to belong to an alliance.

It's obvious that you, other posters here, and Serbia's political class do not seem to grasp the concept that you have to give in order to receive.

One of the better posts on B92. Very perceptive. Funny as well. The reality of their "arrangement" with the USA makes them presume what is not the case with Serbia/Russia.
(Tesla, 29 April 2009 04:07)

In the fact, everyone from (ex)USSR - here I would include even Baltic countries which did recognize Kosovo are much more pro-Serbian than their governments.

In contrast: most Americans do not even know, Albania or Kosovo does exist.

Indeed, I couldnt have said it better myself. Serbia is a universally recognised independent & sovereign state with its own independent non aligned foreign policy. Belgrade unlike Pristina, takes order from no one but herself. Vuk Jeremic will meet Joe Biden as equals.

'Kosova' on the otherhand...well you get the picture. :)

I will look forward when Belgrade will host the Non-Aligned Movement Summit next year while young Albanian boys and girls are being shipped off to Afghanistan and Iraq as canon fodder in America's latest Imperialist adventure.

The contrast will not be any clearer.

Alban

Yes, they will love this, because they've already got tired of numerous beggars staying in lines asking for NATO membership.

When Serbs bow down to Russia they are being friendly and loyal, but if another country agrees with America they are being subservient.

"and the answer of Moscow (threat to Russia ??)... "

Maybe to its plans? The Russians have been building up their forces along the So. Ossetian border (according to OSCE monitors), while the Georgians have not been. Maybe the Russians want to help make the emergency-response exercise as realistic as possible for the Nato people?

Stevan

Right thing to do, the only proper decision for the Serb Government, who have to respect will of the citizens after all. Serbs would never do anything to harm our Russian brothers. We shall not be a part of the NATO project for encircling Russia.

Can someone explain me why Georgia did not recognize Kosovo?

I mean, if South Ossetia and Kosovo are REALLY so distinct, Georgia can recognize unique Kosovo immediatelly?

Same goes for Azerbeidjan.

Maybe Kosovo is indeed *NOT* an unique case. We all (even EA) know that Kosovo is not.

Peter RV

It is more likely that "Serbian participation in Nato exercises in Georgia" would be more dangerous for the regime in Belgrade, rather than for the Russians. Somebody reminded them of 27th of March 1941 when the Serbs overthrew a pro-fascist regime which just joined Berlin-Rome axis.
Joining Nato by their Government, could have had, very well the same effect.
Serbs, unlike other nations, do not take it kindly when pushed against their deeper feelings.

Rest assured that US VP Biden will start with direct flight to Prishtina and then to neighboring countries in this part of the world.

I am glad that Serbian officers are not part of this NATO drill, since they show openly that they belong to Russian satelite.

Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac needs to go. He has been nothing but a liability to the Serbian army. This headline should simply read "Serbian NO to NATO" period.
