The planned visit of Vice President Biden and his boys to Serbia should be viewed very circumspectly. I believe that he will try and strong-arm or otherwise push the Serbian Government to accept President Obama's position concerning Kosovo. As an American I do not trust the President or his Man Biden. In any talks or arrangements with these men, I would suggest the following: "Trust But Verify".

Yours Faithfully,

Professor Dr. Douglas M. Cotner

Sorry to tell you this - but the Obama Administration does not care about Serbia and should not be considered a friend. Obama is ultra-liberal and does not respect Serbia in regard to Kosovo.

This visit - if it's correct - obviously a little reminder.
I do not expect anything monumental to happen, just formal gestures exchanged.

The background: some people have to be reminded, there is only one captain on the ship (or only one bagpiper in a kafana, "egy csárdában két dudás nem fér el" in Hungarian). So nothing else, just the world had to acknowledge, who is the ONLY captain / bagpiper.

Very wise move, all respect for that.

Didn't I say earlier, it will happen? I just did not expected it to happen that soon.

Dear B92,
Your paragraph regarding the visit of Jimmy Carter is inaccurate and misleading. He visited Belgrade, then the capitol of Yugoslavia to attend the funeral of Josip Broz Tito.

I hope you correct this one, I know some of you are young journalist who can't recall this even.

"
The newspaper says it will be the most important American diplomatic visit "since June 1980", when then U.S. President Jimmy Carter was in Belgrade".

I too am really glad that B92 said this. It just demonstrates that all the visits that were made to Serbia during the Cliton years were not very important visits. They accomplished nothing positive, just kept a population in limbo for 10 years, stole land from one population to give to another. Carter did something positive.

What a complete waste of time and money for Biden to visit Belgrade. Biden has openly stated his venemous hatred towards Serbs- after being briefed in the 1980's by a Croatian priest in the US- not to mention the Albanian lobbying efforts in the US aimed at getting Biden's political support. There is absolutely nothing positive that Biden will do to improve US-Serbia relations- only coming with possible threats and ultimatums toward the Serbs. Even in the US, he has very little political credibility (only his "office" has credibility) because of his brashness and inability to negotiate and view different sides of a problem. So having Biden visit Belgrade will be of no actual help in any way- but it can and probably will raise more animosities towards the US and the West.

Kosovo-USA, if 10% are strongly against Kosovo independence then you must realise that only 5% are strongly in favour of independence (the occupiers). The other 20% that have recognised Kosovo have either caved into pressure or have been brided. But it doesn't mean anything without recognition from Serbia so we can spend the next 20 years arguing about the status of Kosovo, which has obviously not been resolved. Start negotiations and we may move forward regardless of whether Biden visits our Southern provice and talks about state building, you can be sure they are just empty words.

So how often do we hear from our fellow Serbian citizen (mainly of Albanian ethnicity) that Serbia will need to recognise Kosovo for seemingly everything is has to do with developing EU and US relations?

For instance, Serbia will need to recognise Kosovo to join the EU. Serbia needs to recognise Kosovo if it needs a loan from the IMF. Serbia needs to recognise Kosovo to gain visa liberalisation with the EU and so on and so forth.

What is obvious here is the importance placed on Serbian recognition of Kosovo. It highlights the fact that Kosovo will never become independent without Serbia approval. These citizens seemingly know that and now lay their misguided hopes on Serbia agreeing to amputate 15% of its heart and soul to a group of citizens who continue to wave the flag of another nation.

So they need to understand that recognition can never and will never happen. This fantasy needs to be forgotten and proper negotiations started. Lets hope these meetings with the US start producing some positive results and that Obama will be more compromising than the previous administrations. He has already hinted that Bondsteel may be coming to an end.

Kate & others,

I have absolutely no problem with Kosovo as country. See Cherokee Nation. Some Nations in the States have their own very privileged citizenship and passports. I never can get such documents because I am not a Cherokee.

They can run casinos, have their system of grants and many other things I cannot even guess. I would never object Cherokee being represented in UN or any other place.

So yes, it is a separate country.... like the country of Cherokee - part of USA.

Just read this:

http://tinyurl.com/cgdxgz

"To be eligible for CDIB/Tribal Citizenship with the Cherokee Nation, you must be able to provide documents that connect you to an enrolled lineal ancestor, who is listed on the (DAWES ROLL) FINAL ROLLS OF CITIZENS AND FREEDMEN OF THE FIVE CIVILIZED TRIBES, Cherokee Nation with a blood degree. This roll was taken between 1899-1906 of Citizens and Freedmen residing in Indian Territory (now NE Oklahoma)."

All of us know the terrible fate of Native Americans in 19th century, now the Cherokee are Cherokee citizens and US citizens.

I guess, would Bill Clinton live in 19th century, he would probably organize a humanitarian bombing of Boston or New York....

That's why they accepted the 6 point plan. Thant's why they took it to ICJ! That's why Russia, China and more then 2/3 of the world continue to block Kosovo! That's why few serbs
want anything to do with the fake albanian institutions in Kosovo!
(MikeC, 27 April 2009 12:11)

No MikeC, 2/3 of the world are not blocking Kosova.
Let me put it to this way: " About 10% are categorically against Kosova Independence, and the rest either have no opinon as of yet or have recognized Kosova allready.
I think you should do little more reaserch before you post such coment.
By the way when was Serbian President and PM invited at White House?

Sinking to pedantry is a bit of a stretch. But no, he was visiting Kosovo as a UN protectorate not a state.

"...no progress had been made regarding the most serious problem in relations between the two countries – Kosovo."

Only minor progress should be made as long as Kosovo is under foreign occupation. Americans should realize that there are rules and international laws to abide by. They can't just occupie someone elses territory. However, sooner or later all occupations end.

>> "Try to get through your head that a majority of serbs DON'T want to join NATO! Why is this so hard for you to understand? Yes, Serbia hopes to join the EU one day but not join America."

Go ahead and try joining one without the other. You can;t hate and insult NATO when most EU also belong in NATO.

>>"If the EU forces Serbia to recognize Kosovo they would have to force Slovakia, Spain, Cyprus and all other countries that haven't and never will recognize the illegal occupation of Serbian territory."

Never? Who are you to speak for them. EU is made of members and Germany, France and UK run the show. No green light until...

No new Cyprus problems for EU, how hard is it to understand? EU or not? They make the rules, not you. You are begging to get in

What does this have to do with the number of countries recognizing Kosovo? Stick to the subject or don't bother.

Serbia and America has agreed to dissagre regarding Kosovo. You think America is going to treaten Serbia with NATO bombings and sanctions if they don't recognize Kosovo. KEEP DREAMING!

Also, a Serbian politician going to the White house has little significance as we all know we are much closer to Russia than the US. Remind me when an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo last visited the Kremlin or Beijing?

Maybe quarantine him for 3 days and put him on the next plane out of N.Tesla airport.

wow this is such big news. really it is... v.p Biden a great freind of the Kosovars who has fought for justic and the freeing of Kosova from Serbia. v.p Biden might go to Belgrade to tell them to give up fighting for what is not yours. However v.p Biden will be in Prishtina a full state visit.

Rick

pre 15 godina

This man should be declared "persona non grata" by Serbian State, for the damage he has done to the Serbs.
One can bet anything , from Belgrade, he'd continue to 'Kosova', to show equal importance to two regimes.
Just remains to be seen what further lecturing to the Serbs will he deliver.

That me correct this; Jimmy Carter didn't visit Serbia in 1978. He visited SFRY, which means Yugoslavia and the president of that time was JOSIP BROZ TITO. That means this will be the first visit to Serbia from VP Biden.

Sorry to tell you this - but the Obama Administration does not care about Serbia and should not be considered a friend. Obama is ultra-liberal and does not respect Serbia in regard to Kosovo.

Professor Dr. Douglas M. Cotner

Douglas M. Cotner
