Recently, I read that the Serbian government is considering sending military units to Georgia to train with NATO forces. As an American, a former US Marine and UNMIK police commander, I thought I might take this opportunity to provide an outside opinion concerning this endeavor.
My first point: NATO is an enemy of Serbia. A military alliance that attacks a sovereign country, kills the citizenry, destroys the infrastructure, and continues to illegally occupy 12.5 percent of the land with its armed forces, is an enemy. Failure to recognize this glaring truth, and pretend that this actuality does not exist is base and servile.
My second point: Serbia should do nothing that will needlessly aggravate Russia. Serbia does not have many friends in the world today—so it is utter lunacy to harm existing friendships at this time. Playing war games in Georgia with NATO units will not bode well with the Russian Federation—and rightly so.
My third point: Serbia should call up all military reservists, carry out an equipment readiness inspection, and then conduct military training exercises—in Serbia. Perhaps Serbia should invite Special Forces units from Russia to participate in these exercise. I suggest that a large portion of this training take place in southern Serbia, in the Preševo Valley.
Serbia, your country has been, and continues to be under attack by Western forces. NATO is not your friend, it is your enemy—even more than the UCK. What more evidence do you need? What did NATO forces do while your people were murdered, their homes burned, and the churches destroyed? These attacks started after NATO forces arrived in 1999 and have continued ever since. Have you forgotten the March 2004 pogrom already?
For God’s sake Belgrade, get your head out of the sand and know your enemy! Contrary to popular belief, you do have other options. Taking the path of dishonor and cowardice, however, is contrary to your noble history—furthermore, it will lead to you utter ruin and loss of identity.
Sincerely,
