"Illicit meat trade burgeoning in Kosovo"

Chicken, packed with hormones, is being smuggled via Kosovo, into central Serbia, in a racket involving Serbs and Albanians, says daily Večernje Novosti.

If you have RSD instead of Euro, that works, too. They all know the exchange rates.

All along I thought that Serbia has the best Army and Police in this part of the world, and at same time are unable to see 18 weelers driving up north to Serbia from Kosovo with harmfull food items. What a joke.

Rudolf, we should make a little experiment.

- You will paint your car red with black eagles and write "Kosovo je Kosovo" on it. Pack it full with forbidden chicken and drive it north. Don't forget to put a 10 Euro note on the windshield.

- I will paint my car the usual tricolor and decorate it with Serbian and Russian eagles. I will also write "Kosova eshte Serbia" on it, pack it full with electric generators for Serbian villagers and drive it south (with the 10 Euro note on the windshield)

I bet an other 100 Euro, all what will be missing in your car and mine after the border checks will be the 10 Euro.

More conventionally, it' being put in the passport usually, not on the windshield.

And if you have an other 100 Euro - you can happily drive your car with KS plate further into Hungary (without visa and without Serbian or Hungarian insurance).

If you have RSD instead of Euro, that works, too. They all know the exchange rates.

bganon,

Excuse my flippancy, but it always amazes me how quickly these historic enmities melt away when there's a buck to be made.

OMG, we did live in the States for 15 years. I wonder, what did we eat there. But before panicking - fact is, people live longer in the States (unless killed by gun) than in most of Europe - while eating the "hormon-chicken".

Nothing will work, except kicking Miskovic in the butt. As long as there are unjustified price differences (why should chicken cost 3 Euro in Serbia? To feed Miskovic?) - the people will smuggle.

There won't be any disrespect to smugglers either - making the hunt very difficult. All what local villagers will say: "this is an OK chicken good for millions of Americans who live longer than us or some people in EU - so screw some idiotic theories of EU good for Miskovic only".

Everyone loves to hate Miskovic, so such smuggling is universally regarded as virtue and benefiting the society.

Crush his food monopoly and the smuggling will die. And investigate, what is really behind these high hormone numbers, not just adopt some EU insanities blindly.

Because EU even compared with the States can be in some cases a pretty evil little kid, don't believe automatically anyone anything.

I agree bganon - it is a serious issue. Sub standard meats are always palmed off on the most vulnerable or those with the least choice.

It is ironic and disgusting that in a country such as Serbia where most people have been eating locally produced healthy food (ie. not mass produced, hormone pumped rubbish) this sort of thing is happening.

Food standards, registration of providers and farms, labelling, education, animal welfare, farm subsidies, rules and regulations about chemicals - all of these are going to have to be tightened up all over Europe during the next few years.

I hate to say it, but I have seen some really dodgy levels of food storage and preparation by older people especially. Not just in Serbia but in many countries. As you say when they are frequently feeding children it is very important that they too are educated.

All those lovely tomatoes, peppers, strawberries and farm eggs... don't let them all be exported or mass produced so they lose all their flavour!

"Chicken is arriving in Kosovo from America and is packed with hormone. Those quantities are absolutely forbidden in Europe."

So....now the war against Serbia is to poison our food supply. Yet Mr Munter says that US-Serbia relations are on an upswing. As if using the depleted uranium warheads and environmental dust weren't poisoning the Serbs fast enough, now the US is resorting directly to our food supply.

Its tempting to make a joke out of it, but its pretty dangerous.
Some of this stuff is sold at markets or butchers where they already have dubious standards of hygine. Added to that its people of a certain age that buy in those places out of habit. Invariably those women take that meat home to their grandchildren.

Now I don't like monopolist supermarkets but I think there is much less chance of this type of food being sold there.

Isn't it nice to read a story about Serbs and Albanians overcoming their differences and cooperating successfully together for a change.
