Olli,

They are actually very skilled drivers, unfortunately. The worst is a skilled driver who loses his inner guard.

Arguably, the alcohol is the biggest death factor and it's responsible for the number of deaths at the scale of the civil war in 90-s.

Also I just can't understand the "European" desire for cars considered by NHTSA as not roadworthy. I am not advocating for laughable mega-road-cruisers, just cars like Honda Jazz - but sold under "Honda Fit" moniker in the States: CHEAPER car, re-inforced body, better equipped for long-distance driving, larger engine with lower rpm (lasts longer, too).

Good points, and that helps but people still drive dangerously.

Serbian people amaze me. They are extremely generous, pleasant and nice. They walk slowly along the quay, and can drink a small coffee for two hours. But once they get behind the wheel... ouch. Not all, but a lot drive on the shoulder, pass on the left at the intersection making cars with the right away have to wait, speed, run lights, take rights on reds when they shouldn't etc. etc.

The police see this also, and do nothing. The police need to enforce more laws, stop taking bribes.

It will take a long time to change...

Ataman,

I agree with what you say. My experience after motoring 25 years in the South-East Europe: The absolute biggest factor for deaths on roads is primitive driving. Those who cause accidents drive too fast. Too fast considering the conditions of traffic, road, car, tires, weather and light. Inadequate motoring skills combined with arrogant attitude towards other travelers is nothing but Russian roulette on the road.

It should be illegal and carry a mandatory jail sentence of no less than 3 years to make "one car out of two".

There should be no duty and no tax on importing cars from USA which have five-star NHTSA crash test.

There should be a cash incentive to scrap old cars which are not roadworthy according NHTSA

There should be zero tolerance towards driving under drug/alcohol influence. A very good solution was found in Thailand where offender's names are on public display in their native village on a "board of shame". And of course minimal fine should be no less than 100 thousand RSD + loss of the license.

Enforce the seatbelt law and make it mandatory to have seatbelt in the back.

Child in the lap = 5000 RSD away.

Roads in Serbia are not very good, but not any worse than what the neighbors or some States in USA do have. Still the same States have much better statistics.
