Berkeley, I do not see why you are against this, because the US made all the necessary conditions for this fundamentalist iranian government to come to power. Remember, Iran had a democracy, and the CIA did all it could to overthrow the democratically elected leader, called Mossadeq, in 1953. The US installed a brutal dictator that killed people left and right. Then in 1979 this new regime came to power, which is in power to this day. You see, the US did not want democracy and instead put a dictator in power. The people responded, and now we have this other regime which is less brutal that the US backed one. But, the lesson to be learned is that democracy is the way, and in order to acheive that and maintain that, the US should keep its nose out of the internal affairs of other countries. The US overthrew the democracy of Iran, and many other countries. This is the problem.

Adrian, all over latin america there are leftist oriented governments. It is not fair to call them soviet governments, or jihadists. We can look at chile, argentina, brazil, venezuela, bolivia, ecaudor, and many others. These countries are socially oriented and are not soviet governments by any means. Potential from cooperating with them is enormous. Therefore there is an alternative to the EU. You are from Romania, and as we see, your development model which made you dependent on the EU is currently failing. Your country has been bailed out from total economic collapse. Therefore we have hopefully learned from your case study, and therefore we want to cooperate NOT JUST with the EU, but with others too. Latin America is a prime region, and there are many other such regions too, regions with little US influence, and where they are not jihadists or soviets.

Nope.The IMF,World bank have rarely 150 bln (a joke)on their balance sheets while Russia and China alone harbour 3 trillion in cash.
Russia is not even member of the WTO and gets along very fine,China copies western technology because they know nobody can punish them(too important market,will surpass Americas GDP in 5 years time.)
Russia,Iran,Iraq,Venezuela;china have the most resources like Oil,Gas,metals under their control).
China and Russia aggresivelly expand their military power while the US cuts back on every front.
And now imagine the final punch:Oil will be traded in an all Asian currency,ruble,yuan whatever.
That would be the ruin of the US economy because of this trade in oil they are able to keep their dollar artificially strong and borrow like parasites.

Mark my words,within ten years time there will be a new global reserve currency(under control by resource rich countries like Russia and biggest markets Central Asia,especially China)and this will finally lead to a slow but sure demise of American power.

Iran is a key part on this global chessboard,everybody wants them on their side because of their resources(either by threatening to bomb (US)them or by cozzing up to them (Russia).)
The outcome in my mind is very clear,Russia will do whatever it takes to get Iran on bord(resources necessery for a new reserve currency) and even if that means by proliferatiing nukes to Iran while the US has also to respect the demands of the powerful Jewish lobby in Washington that is very militant and anti-Iranian.
