The Bajrakli mosque in central Belgrade has still to be restored five years after it was set alight during demonstrations against the violence in Kosovo.

Refer to the Pact of Umar. A little Muslim piece of jurisprudence. Easy enough to look up on Wiki. These rules, set out by Muslims can be applied to this situation for their satisfaction. In short if it were an existing Christian Church in a Muslim land (in this case a mosque in a christian land) it can't be rebuilt without permission nor can additions, alterations or any visible signs of Christianity adorn the structure.

Alban:
“Everyone has been repaired or is being repaired. Not that B92 would report it of course”

It is true that many are being repaired, by the K government, using its funds. The Kosova Protection Corps was involved in some of these repairs, not that that would ever be acknowledged by the “terrorist”-baiters here. And that’s better than failing to do anything about the one mosque in Belgrade for 5 years.

However, are you not exaggerating with your “everything”? Why not acknowledge just how little of the job has been done? Last I read (a few days ago), the church in central Prizren was still sitting in the same state of ruin.

Shame on all of you suggesting someone else should doit first

To all the Christian believers, I fully and deeply regret for the actions taken by the Albanians in Kosova during the 17th March, 2004, but if you don't want to be so blind-eyed, I suggest you read the news and move on:

See this: http://www.mrt.com.mk/en/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5805&Itemid=28

Now, I don't see anything similar happening in Beograd (i.e. Serbia) in restoring the mosque(s) destroyed by the Serbs themselves during the same time the horrible actions happened in Kosova - 2004!

(Alban, 18 March 2009 15:29)

ofcourse they are constantly being repaired because they are constantly under attack...

and serbia didn't destroy anything in kosovo, nato did; why serbs destroy what took them centuries to build???

RE: Mosque

Notwithstanding the horrific destruction of Serbian Orthodox Churches in not only Kosovo but also in B&H and Croatia, the Mosque should be rebuilt immmediately.

The Mufti in Belgrade has always had good relations with the government in Belgrade.

How would Belgraders react if Kalemegdan was burned down? Need it be reminded that Kalemegdan was a Turkish fortress. Or how about Golubac or Petrovaradin near Belgrade and Novi Sad?

There should be no tolerance of the burning of any religious and historical site.

Agia Sofia in Constantinople still stands and even Christian artificats are part of the exhibit when it was converted into a mosque.

It needs to be said that the photo in the article is dated back to 2004. I lived close to the mosque back when I was in BG and I can say that it looked nothing like this. On top of that, people were going there all the time, sometimes more than 100. There's also a small restaurant/soup kitchen on the mosque grounds that serves food for the dietary needs of its congregants.

The same goes for the mosque in Nis which, at least on the outside, has been fully restored.

No one bothers with the BG mosque. There's no graffiti on it, no anti-Muslim slurs, and yes during tense periods (amounting mostly to post Partizan-Red Star matches) a police unit stands by the mosque, no one goes near it.

Ratko why do you think that hundreds of churches in Kosovo should stay demolished?

I think they should be repaired. I do not support attacks on churches or mosques.

How do you feel about the destruction of Belgrade's mosque?

This is subject matter after all.

The mosque is a historic monument and Belgrade landmark and burning it was a disgrace. It's not even like you ever see Albanians worshipping there. Mindless.

In most countries, a mosque or church would be repaired by it's congregation. Why are they waiting for Belgrade to do it? Typical Serbian response "The state will take care of it". I can talk to my family until I am blue in the face about the need for taxes and responsibility and they just look at me confused and say the state will do it, and draw a blank when I ask them where the money will come from.

No Zvonko it should be fixed immediately. Belgrade isn't some little backwater town where things like this should be allowed to happen, its the capital of the Balkans.

As capital of the Balkans it must lead the way in terms of tolerance and spirit.

It is a shame that the burning of the mosque was allowed to happen (not seen even during time of Milosevic), so at the very least it should be fixed quickly.
