Who really believes that the EU will allow Serbia to join? The EU bombs you, lets Albanian bus bombers go, ignoresAlbanian organ thievery, dismembers your state with illegal UDI of Kosovo, ignores Croatia in its criminal behavior towards Serbs; yet wants Serbs handed over to a kangaroo court where if the procedures they have in place are not enough for a conviction, they kill the defendant.
The EU will still do business with Serbia if there is a profit to be made. Serbia can still, hew wood and draw water for the EU. In return the EU will sell to Serbia ADIDAS track suits and any other things a cosmopolitan Serb needs. The Serbs don't have to sell their country for baubles and trinkets. If this genration can't deal with Europe, then don't tie the hands of the next generation.

ZK,

By adopting the Euro, Romania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia could also attract more foreign direct investment.

Membership of the Eurozone enhances investors' confidence in a country.

Romania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia want to adopt the Euro as soon as possible. This is because the Euro acts as a safe haven during the financial crisis.

(Mircea, 13 March 2009 15:25)

That is highly unlikely in the near future as these countries won't be able to converge with the rest of the Euroland.
These countries have borrowed
billions of Euros and other foreign currencies which are unable to service at present.
If they devalue their currencies then their foreign
currency debts will become more expensive.
Furthermore, at the recent EU meeting of heads of state the Germans made it clear that no country will join the Euro unless they're ready and refused to bail out any country that is going through hard times.
The benefits of adopting the Euro as a currency have been greatly exaggerated.Whereas it provides a shelter from currency speculators to weak countries it does not provide any flexibility as far as economic policy is concerned because of the constraints and targets each country must abide.
The idea that one rule fits all is absurd. The core countries are different than the periphery.
Unless the new treaty is put into effect and the EU moves to political unity i cannot possibly see how can the currency survive.

...and the UK will also eventually want Kosovo to join the EU and the UK's Serbia does not include Kosovo. Surely the UK will not stupid enough to allow Serbia to join the EU and let Serbia have the power to veto Kosovo's membership. The UK should allow Serbia to join the EU without recognising Kosovo, but at the same time make Serbia sign a document, which says Serbia can not veto Kosovo's entry to the EU. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future regarding EU integration of the Western Balkans. I think all the Western Balkans deserves to be in the EU, so that they can all live in peace, I think this is the best way forward.

ZK,

In Romania many firms set their prices in euros. For example, my mobile telephone contract is in euros. When our currency, the leu, depreciates against the Euro I have to pay more.

Many people in Romania took out loans from banks in euros or have contracts in euros. The population suffers when our currency depreciates against the Euro. I think the situation is the same in Serbia.

If Romania had the Euro we would no longer be affected by currency fluctuations. This is why I hope Romania will adopt the Euro as soon as possible. The Romanian government has set 1 January 2014 as the target date for adopting the Euro.

ZK

Micea, it is a safe haven for investors and whatnot but it doesn't necessarily serve the economies of the Eurozone well. Like I said, it has the effect of reducing exports while increasing imports.

The strength of the Japanese Yen is killing its economy so sorry Mircea but your argument is flawed.

ZK,

Romania, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia want to adopt the Euro as soon as possible. This is because the Euro acts as a safe haven during the financial crisis.

Furthermore, Denmark will probably hold a referendum on adopting the Euro next year. If Denmark adopts the Euro, Sweden will also join the Eurozone.

ZK

pre 15 godina

Mircea, currency fluctuation is a normal phenomenon and has it benefits.

Serbia is in a much better position to have control over its own currency than to join the Euro. The problem is that those in government are completely clueless in what they are doing.

Wasting foreign reserves on inflating the value of the Dinar was a mistake. It should have fallen with the rest when compared to the Euro.

In that case it helps protect the local economy. You see, during these times people start restricting their expenditure and seek cheaper goods. Now that the Euro is strong, items imported from say Slovenia become more expensive so Serbians will opt to buy locally produced items rather than the more expensive Slovenian ones and exports become cheaper so Slovenians would buy cheaper Serbian produce than the local ones.

Currency fluctuation works in favour of the local economies and in this case, the Dinar should find its true value rather than constantly being interfered with by clueless politicians.

The British pound has lost quite a bit of value also but now we are getting people going to the UK to buy cheap goods, which helps the UK economy. Serbia should be in the same boat so once again your point is flawed.

A strong Euro works against the economy. It means less exports and more imports.

Mircea

pre 15 godina

I think Serbia has a lot to gain by joining the EU. Serbia would have the possibility to adopt the Euro once she meets the criteria.

Serbia's economy would be better protected if Serbia would have the Euro instead of the Dinar. The Euro offers protection especially during the financial crisis.

Slovenia and Slovakia were not affected by currency fluctuations because they have the Euro. Romania, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic suffered due to currency fluctuations.

During this financial crisis, Denmark and Sweden realized that it is better to be in the Eurozone.

There are also people in the UK who believe that the UK's economy would be better protected if the UK would have the Euro.

I really do feel for those Serbians who believe in this hogwash. Firstly, Britain, France and Germany all want Serbian in the EU without Kosovo not only because they are attempting to dismember a sovereign state but also because they do not want a flood of Albanians entering the EU.

The Dutch have been very clear about their position and that is unlikely to change any time soon. However, we continue to hear some spin about this condition day in day out.

Since this so-called government is a complete failure and loyal to anti-Serbian dictators, it has to continue waving rotten carrots in front of those still gullible enough to believe in this rubbish.

Big Deal so does France so does all the EU countries.First accept the seperation of Kosovo accept the kangaroo court in the Hague and be one of the 30 or so countries in the EU.
Do the Serbian people know they will lose their sovereignty? Do they want to be a fief of Britain France and Germany? The Uk in the Ratification in 1973 never really talked about loss of sovereignty.
Something like 75% of laws in the UK come via the EU.
The Serbs no doubt will willingly eat at the masters tables but don't for a moment think you are really an indepependent state able to make its own laws.
So Delic and Tadic promise you riches tommorrow and a wonderful life .Don't bank on it! Oh the political classes will benefit and the ex KPJ Dacic and his ilk but freedom ? What influence will the ordinary man have? Forget it you fools!!
