“Hadžić instead of Mladić for SAA?”

The government has proposed that, should Goran Hadžić be caught first, Ratko Mladić’s arrest would no longer be a condition for unfreezing the SAA.

It is taken as granted that Belgrade has not done enough to find / arrest certain suspected war criminals.

What is less known but being revealed by those such as Florence Hartman and others is that the US had no intention of arresting Mladic or Karadzic. And not only did they have no intention of doing so, but they blocked EU countries' attempts to do so. So much for Holbrooke, its not even just about his deal with Karadzic any more, its the whole US policy.

So much for the theory that the US played a heroic role in the Balkans. What with the CIA being such great friends with Milosevic's right hand man Stanisic.

I think its time for proponents of the hollywood vs bad guy position to wise up to US foreign policy, which over the short, medium and long term was just as harmful to the former Jugoslavija as EU policy.

The evidence is mounting up, make no mistake.

this belgrade regime has never stopped showing that it is pro-war criminal, never stopped actively shielding them. if being pro-war crimes is the (well-earned) reputation they wish to promote, they are doing a fantastic job.

these people are truly ethically challenged, which is to say thy are utterly lacking ethics. even for the EU, and that's saying a lot!

"Sources say that the Netherlands’ view is that Hadžić’s arrest would not be sufficient, and it will not back down until Mladić is extradited."

Serbia's proposal is an indecent one. No surprise here. Serbia knows where these two criminals are "hiding" just want to come out with a bit of "saveface".

It looks like one of the "proposals" made by Serbia to Ahtisari regarding an offer of 99% percent autonomy and all the Kosovar Albanians had to accept was to be called Serbian. Can't be more indecent than that....

Doesn't this just expose the fact that the Serbian government knows where these wanted mean are and that they could have been handed over years ago.

Diana,

I think the UK should adopt the Euro and support deeper European integration. Membership of the Eurozone offers protection especially during the financial crisis.

Just look at Eastern Europe. Slovakia and Slovenia are not affected by currency declines because they are part of the Eurozone.

Poland, Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic have been hit by currency declines because they are outside the Eurozone.

There's no point.

The Dutch said countless of times that they insist on Mladic's arrest because they believe Karadzic is a much harder arrest. Thus implying that if Karadzic was arrested they would drop the Mladic requirement.

we were not even allowed a vote on the lisbon treaty in the UK like much of the electorate in the EU.!!!

Diana, no other EU member was allowed to vote on the Lisbon treaty except the Irish and they rejected it, which is the reason others were not allowed to vote! The EU constitution was already rejected and the Lisbon treaty is just a re-write of that.

The EU is being run by dictators and I have no idea why Serbia is putting so much effort into membership when we will do just fine as a non-member.

Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of this. While I do not agree that the EU (or 1 country) should hold all of Serbia hostage, it is what it is. Just accept the fact that they both need to be handed over and move on. You either get in or you don't. That's the price of admission to this exclusive club. Too much time and energy is being spent whining about it.

Mircea, we read the article, we did. And the reporter has put it in a very clear, professional way - no need for your "translation". Or you feel you could do a better job?

I doubt very much that the SAA will be implemented after catching either of them. Many countries need to keep demonising Serbia because it clouds their own illegal involvement in bombing Serbia. Why didn't the Dutch protect Serb civilians in Sebrinica for example when the terrorists used their protected areas to kill Serb civilians? As for the EU, more and more people I speak to want out of this undemocratic union that only seems to serve politicians in their extravagent life styles. we were not even allowed a vote on the lisbon treaty in the UK like much of the electorate in the EU.!!!
